Although teachers and researchers have long recognized the value of analyzing student errors for diagnosis and remediation, students have not been encouraged to take advantage of errors as learning opportunities in mathematics instruction. The study reported here was designed to explore how secondary school students could be enabled to capitalize on the potential of errors to stimulate and support mathematical inquiry. The article provides a case study of the proposed strategy of “using errors as springboards for inquiry” in action, identifies some important variations within the strategy, and discusses its potential contributions to mathematics instruction.

The purpose of the present study is to test and determine the effectiveness of the unique method for quantifying the aesthetic and psychological criteria of aesthetic education of middle and senior school-age students. This method allows conducting a group study on the criteria of aesthetic education of students for a limited time (one academic hour). The results allow performing a comparative analysis of the level of aesthetic education of individual students on certain criteria of aesthetic education in general (as well as on the components of these criteria), and conducting a comparative analysis of the aesthetic education between individual groups. The method is based on the use of some already known technics of psychological diagnosis of teenagers and young persons, developed by R.S. Nemov, as well as methods for researching the activity of thinking by I.M. Lushikhina. The new interpretive schemes of well-known methods proposed by the authors allow quantifying not only the cognitive abilities of students, but also assessing the level of development of their visual skills. The latter is particularly important because, when combined with a quantitative assessment of the social criterion of aesthetic upbringing, it provides the most complete picture of the level of aesthetic development of students at a certain period.

The current trend of changing education has affected all stages of education. Innovations have affected the secondary school classes (grades 10–11) of an ordinary Russian school. Now we are dealing with a model of specialized classes, which consists in dividing students into classes according to main subjects. It should be noted that the current state of grades 10–11 is characterized by an increasing interest in the humanities profile of education, which encourages methodologists to search for new and optimal methods of teaching foreign languages. Recently, the content and language integrated learning (CLIL), which consists in studying a school subject through a foreign language, has become especially popular. The article considers the main psychological and pedagogical conditions for the use of content and language integrated learning for the purpose of professional orientation of students of the secondary school humanities classes. The analysis of the existing methodological literature allowed the author to identify certain psychological and pedagogical conditions that allow teaching secondary school students a foreign language on the basis of content and language integrated learning. These include: the use of tasks that reflect the specifics of the preparation of the corresponding profile of higher school education, which allows students of the humanities classes of secondary school to get acquainted with future activities in a foreign language by performing problem tasks; professional orientation of training; the required level of foreign language proficiency of secondary school students at the moment of graduating from school at the B2 level; the distribution of students by the level of foreign language proficiency; intra-profile diversity, which takes into account the development of various branches of the humanities; competences of a foreign language teacher; motivation of secondary school students to learn a foreign language through content and language integrated learning. Special emphasis in the paper is placed on the competence of a foreign language teacher who conducts his course on the basis of content and language integrated learning.

Summary The German Pupils Academy (Deutsche Schüler-Akademie) is a summer-school program for highly gifted secondary-school students. Three types of program evaluation were conducted. Input evaluation confirmed the participants as intellectually highly gifted students who are intrinsically motivated and interested to attend the courses offered at the summer school. Process evaluation focused on the courses attended by the participants as the most important component of the program. Accordingly, the instructional approaches meet the needs of highly gifted students for self-regulated and discovery oriented learning. The product or impact evaluation was based on a multivariate social-cognitive framework. The findings indicate that the program contributes to promoting motivational and cognitive prerequisites for transforming giftedness into excellent performances. To some extent, the positive effects on students' self-efficacy and self-regulatory strategies are due to qualities of the learning environments established by the courses.

This study introduces the Schoolwork Engagement Inventory (EDA), which measures energy, dedication, and absorption with respect to schoolwork. Structural equation modeling was used to assess the validity and reliability of the inventory among students attending postcomprehensive schools. A total of 1,530 (769 girls, 761 boys) students from 13 institutions (six upper-secondary and seven vocational schools) completed the EDA 1 year apart. The results showed that a one-factor solution had the most reliability and fitted best among the younger students, whereas a three-factor solution was most reliable and fit best among the older students. In terms of concurrent validity, depressive symptoms and school burnout were inversely related, and self-esteem and academic achievement were positively associated with EDA. Boys and upper-secondary-school students experienced lower levels of schoolwork engagement than girls and vocational-school students.
