This research project evaluates Let's Be Safe, an e-learning application. This application aims to educate young adults with intellectual disability about cyberbullying—an issue prevalent among this population—and cybersafety. Twenty-two individuals with mild to moderate intellectual disability took part in the research. The study employed a mixed-methods design including observational and inquiry methods of usability evaluation as well as focus groups. The evaluation investigated the relationships between perceived aesthetics, emotional response, and usability for the application. The focus group gathered information from the participants regarding their knowledge and experience of cyberbullying and cybersafety. The analyses found no significant relationships between aesthetics, emotional response, and usability for this user group. However, the research gathered data, which will contribute to the development of Let's Be Safe. The findings of the focus group revealed that cyberbullying is an issue among this population.

The importance of robotics and assistive technologies for healthcare is increasing. For their introduction into practical application, the continuous integration of the user perspective is crucial to ensure acceptance and usability. This can be achieved by the user-centered design approach. In an earlier publication, several problems with its functional implementation within research and development (R&D) projects were pointed out. This chapter discusses possible solutions to promote an effective integration of the user perspective in R&D projects based on six interviews with experts from Germany. The results can be summarized in three main requirements: first, the generation of a common understanding of the target group; second, a scientific research approach considering the context of technology usage; third, projectification, with a focus on efficient resource planning, the development of generic technologies, and technology evaluations with the user group. Leaders of innovative projects can benefit from implementing these strategies in the development process.

Finger-Fitts law (FFitts law) is a model to predict touch-pointing times, modified from Fitts' law. It considers the absolute touch-point precision, or a finger tremor factor σa, to decrease the admissible target area and thus increase the task difficulty. Among choices such as running an independent task or performing parameter optimization, there is no consensus on the best methodology to measure σa. This inconsistency could be detrimental to HCI studies such as pointing technique evaluations and user group comparisons. By integrating the results of our 1D and 2D touch-pointing experiments and reanalyses of previous studies' data, we examined the advantages and disadvantages of each approach to compute σa. We found that the parameter optimization method is a suboptimal choice for predicting the performance.

Abstract. With the appearance of smartphones and affordable mobile phone plans including (internet) data within the last decade, mobile cartography in the sense of map applications became available to a wide user group including professionals and non-professionals. This paper defines the field of mobile cartography, deals with new research areas and prerequisites concerning mobile cartography and a set of criteria for evaluating map applications has been derived. For this work, the criteria have been applied to several map applications in order to evaluate them and present recent features and possible actions. In particular, the focus has been set on high-quality map applications for Austria and on novel navigation and routing capabilities. Results showed that the guideline presented in this paper can already be well applied but can still be improved upon.

Justification of recommendations increases trust between users and the system but also generates more relevant recommendations than recommendation systems that do not incorporate it. That is why, we conducted a justification study of the recommendation for IAAS. Our comparative study shows that IAAS, which currently does not offer the opportunity to justify recommendations, needs to be improved. From the analysis of justification methods studied in this work, it appears that none of these methods can be used effectively in IAAS. That is why, we proposed a new IAAS architecture that deals separately with item classification and the extraction of the justification has added the item during recommendation generation. The item selection method remains unchanged as we plan to implement a new strategy to filter user’s reviews should now be extended to four elements: the documentary unit, the group of users, the justification and the weight. Opinion A=(UD,G,J,a). Where UD represents the documentary unit, G the user group, J is the justification and a is the weight of the recommendation.

<p>This thesis aimed to reach two principal outcomes: To develop a robust testing methodology that allowed a detailed and fair comparative analysis of the benefit, or otherwise, of 3D methods of information interrogation over alternative 2D methods; and to test the ability for a single model to have multiple user-group functionality. The research used the examples of two user-groups within the urban planning industry and their typical decision making processes. A robust testing methodology was developed to investigate the usefulness of 3D in a detailed and focused manner involving individual end-users as participants in a case study. The development of this efficient process assisted the study in moving past the initial visual impact of the models. The method employed a combination of three research instruments: A focus group formed the base from which an urban planning task, questionnaire and guided discussion investigated evidence for the benefit or otherwise of 3D using both quantitative and subjective measures. Two widely disparate user-groups were selected to further test the functionality of a resource to meet the needs of multiple users: city council urban designers and property developers. The research revealed that 3D methods of information visualisation allow users to develop a greater spatial awareness, increasing their understanding of information, when compared to alternative 2D methods. While evidence for this benefit was established using both quantitative and subjective methods, the research proved that this increased understanding does not necessarily lead to quicker decisions as the 2D group completed the task faster and more accurately than the 3D group. The ability for a single model to have multiple user-group functionality was confirmed as each of two disparate user-groups noted that the availability of the other user-group's information was of positive benefit to their understanding of the proposed development within the urban planning task.</p>

Introduction: The dependence on smartphones has become widespread among all age groups in every realm of daily life. There has been increased concern about the adverse effects of problematic smartphone use and media multitasking among adolescents. Recent studies used various performance measures like questionnaire surveys to examine the association between smartphone addiction and learning performance, and such studies have yielded mixed findings. The current study investigates the effects of media multitasking on cognitive performance using Electroencephalography (EEG) features and a self-report questionnaire survey. Methods: The patterns of smartphone use among adolescents in South India were investigated in this study, using a questionnaire survey. Further, the impact of smartphone usage on cognitive task performance was examined using EEG features. For this, EEGs of twenty-two healthy subjects were recorded during learning tasks before and after using a social networking site on smartphones. Subsequently, various EEG features were extracted, including ratios of wavelet decomposed EEG bands, attention index, and Sample entropy. Finally, these cognitive performance indices were evaluated and compared with a control group. Results: A total of 600 healthy individuals (341 males, 259 females) participated in the survey among whom, 310 (50.91%) belonged to the high-user group. Performance degradation (p=0.005), sleep problems (p=0.040) and mental stress (p=0.049) were more prevalent among the high-user group. A significant decline in EEG-based cognitive performance indices was also observed in the phone-use group compared to the control group. Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the importance of controlling phone use when engaged in cognitive tasks. The study also offers an insight to develop neurofeedback techniques that enhance cognitive skills.
