gamified sleep intervention for veterans: an overview

A good night’s sleep is well known to be imperative for maintaining one’s overall wellness. Yet, about half of Canadian adults struggle with falling asleep or maintaining sleep. The impacts of insufficient sleep are wide-ranging, from physiological correlates such as diabetes to mental correlates such as depression. Effective treatments for sleep-related issues exist: for example, online interventions for insomnia have been found to be effective. As a medicine and a health psychology student at, respectively, Sherbrooke University and McGill University, we worked on the MissionVAV health promotion program during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing free gamified interventions for Canadian Veterans and their families. Over the course of several online interventions related to physical health, we observed that a large proportion of our participants were dissatisfied with their sleep. Consequently, we have developed an 8-week online sleep intervention to address this primordial element of primary prevention. The intervention aims to better our participants’ sleep through providing weekly readings on the following topics: age-related changes in sleep, proper sleep hygiene, varied relaxation techniques as well as the relationship between sleep and chronic pain, menopause, shift work, rumination, exercise and light. To promote healthy sleep hygiene habits, daily self-assessment questions are provided and are incentivized through points and storytelling. Furthermore, health coaches trained in sleep medicine follow participants throughout their journey to provide support and reinforcement. Ultimately, the intervention aims to shed light on the importance of sleep within preventative medicine, tackling it systematically in an engaging, gamified fashion.

Mark Eaton—A Non-traditional Path to Librarianship

In The Profession the Bulletin showcases some of the creative ways the study of religion can be put to use in and beyond academia. The Bulletin staff sat down with Mark Eaton, a librarian at The City University of New York (CUNY), which consists of 25 campuses and 31 libraries. Mark Eaton obtained his Bachelor of Arts in religious studies at McGill University before receiving a Master of Information Studies in library studies at the University of Toronto and later, a Master of Arts in religious studies at Queens University. Between his degrees, Eaton worked at the London Metropolitan University Library, at a bakery, and on a farm. Eaton describes how his journey in academia and various professions led him down an unexpected, but fulfilling, path.

BIOLOGICAL SESSION“THE IMPORTANCE OF G. GAMOW'S IDEAS FOR BIOLOGY OF THE 21st CENTURY” AT THE XXI GAMOW INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE-SCHOOL IN ODESSA (15-21 AUGUST, 2021)

Третій рік поспіль в межах Гамовської конференції працює Біологічна секція: «Важливість ідей Г.А. Гамова для біології 21-ого століття», організація якої викликана великою повагою до особистості вченого Георгія Антоновича Гамова, наукові інтереси якого об’єднали астрофізику, космологію та молекулярну біологію. Цього року Біологічна секція працювала в режимі on-line 17.08.2021. Роботу секції розпочали з виступу професора Тобіуса Дельбрюка (Institute of Neuroinformatics – ETH and University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland), сина видатного фізика, Нобелевського лауреата Макса Дельбрюка (в певний період товариша Г.А. Гамова). Професор Тобіус Дельбрюк назвав свою доповідь – "Out of this world: Recounting Max's Delbruck memories of George Gamow”. Ця доповідь, присвячена феноменальній особистості Г.А. Гамова, придала засіданню біологічної секції емоційну атмосферу наближення до великих ідей, що надали і зараз надають поштовх для розвитку молекулярної біології. Значну зацікавленість учасників секції викликала доповідь Dr. V.N. Korzun (KWS SAAT SE & Co. KGaA (м. Айнбек, Німеччина) «Applications of genetic and genomic research in cereals», що продемонструвала впровадження в селекційний процес сучасних молекулярно-генетичних технологій. З доповіддю «DNA-protein interactions as a tool of synthetic biology», що присвячена високо технологічним розробкам зі створення біосенсорів науково-виробничою фіромою Explogen LLC (EXG) (м. Львів, Україна) виступив к.б.н. Ю. Ребець. Наступна пленарна доповідь «Using the G.A. Gamow’s ideas for molecular genetic diagnostics of infectious and somatic human diseases at the current stage of medical development» була представлена білоруськими вченими, а саме професор С.А. Касцьюк розповіла про молекулярно-генетичні дослідження, що виконуються в Білоруській медичній академії післядипломної освіти. Dr. Yu. Monchak з McGill University (м. Монреаль, Канада) також представив доповідь присвячену впровадженню ДНК-технологій в діагностику патології людини ˗ «Targeted therapy, DNA sequence and the race against neoplasia». Ця доповідь викликала велику зацікавленість учасників біологічної секції. Молоді науковці Іщенко О.О., Жарікова Д.О., Роман І.І., Доля Б., Рошка Н.М., Чубик І.Ю., Попович Ю.А., Топораш М.К., Пидюра М.О. – доктори філософії з біології, кандидати наук, аспіранти, що займаються дослідженнями в галузі молекулярної біології представили дев’ять доповідей, що відбивають результати виконаних досліджень у низці провідних університетів нашої країни, а саме у Львівському національному університеті ім. І. Франка, у Одеському національному університеті імені І.І. Мечникова, у Чернівецькому національному університеті ім. Юрія Федьковича та ДУ «Інституті харчової біотехнології та Геноміки» (м. Київ). Представлені доповіді викликали жвавий інтерес, а формат on-line дозволів об’єднати у роботі секції понад 35 учасників з різних країн ˗ України, Білорусі, Швейцарії, Німеччини, Канади і Казахстану.

A Cosmopolitan Jurisprudence

H. Patrick Glenn (1940–2014), Professor of Law and former Director of the Institute of Comparative Law at McGill University, was a key figure in the global discourse on comparative law. This collection is intended to honor Professor Glenn's intellectual legacy by engaging critically with his ideas, especially focusing on his visions of a 'cosmopolitan state' and of law conceptualized as 'tradition'. The book explores the intellectual history of comparative law as a discipline, its attempts to push the objects of its study beyond the positive law of the nation-state, and both its potential and the challenges it must confront in the face of the complex phenomena of globalization and the internationalization of law. An international group of leading scholars in comparative law, legal philosophy, legal sociology, and legal history takes stock of the field of comparative law and where it is headed.

The epigenetics of early life adversity and trauma inheritance: an interview with Moshe Szyf

In this interview, Professor Moshe Szyf speaks with Storm Johnson, Commissioning Editor for Epigenomics, on his work to date in the field of social epigenetics. Szyf received his PhD from the Hebrew University and did his postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at Harvard Medical School, joined the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at McGill University in Montreal in 1989 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Academy of Health Sciences of Canada. He is the founding codirector of the Sackler Institute for Epigenetics and Psychobiology at McGill and is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research Experience-Based Brain and Biological Development program. Szyf was the founder of the first pharma to develop epigenetic pharmacology, Methylgene Inc., and the journal Epigenetics. The Szyf lab proposed two decades ago that DNA methylation is a prime therapeutic target in cancer and other diseases and postulated and provided the first set of evidence that the social environment early in life can alter DNA methylation, launching the emerging field of social epigenetics.

Physical health status of music students in a post-secondary institution: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: Musicians’ health is an essential field of healthcare that is specifically tailored to the needs of musicians, which encompasses multiple facets of health. OBJECTIVE: The research seeks to determine the prevalence of physical injuries in music students and musicians, and to identify possible causes. METHODS: A previously unvalidated 42-item survey was distributed to music students, non-music students, and professional musicians. The questions addressed demographics, physical health, mental health, medication use, and interest in musicians’ health. The study was conducted from Fall semester 2017 to Winter semester 2019 at McGill University, with analysis completed in August 2019. RESULTS: A total of 585 complete responses were obtained. Music students (35%) had higher prevalence of physical injuries than non-music students (18%), and professional musicians had the highest prevalence (56%). Multiple factors dictate the prevalence of physical injuries among musicians, including gender, age, program of enrollment, and instrument of choice. Of note, daily duration of practice was not one of these factors. CONCLUSIONS: Several factors were identified through this cross-sectional analysis to be associated with musicians’ physical injuries. These findings can serve as a foundation through which physicians and post-secondary institutions may implement changes to better enhance the physical health of musicians. It also cast doubts on previous assumptions associated with physical injury of musicians.

Mapping social structures for sustainability transformation at McGill University, Canada

Purpose For a university to be a prime mover for sustainability transformation, all units of the university should contribute. However, organizational change in educational institutions is often studied by examining specific domains such as research or operation in isolation. This results in a less-than-complete picture of the potential for university-wide change. In contrast, this paper aims to examine the network of social relations that determine the diffusion and sustainability of change efforts across a university. The authors use McGill University (Canada) as a model system to study the network of actors concerned with sustainability to learn how this network influences the penetration of sustainability throughout the university. Design/methodology/approach To explore the existing social structure, the authors use an innovative approach to illuminate the influence of social structure on organizational change efforts. Using a mixed methods approach combining social network analysis with qualitative interview data, the authors examine the influence of the social structure on sustainability transformation at McGill University. The authors conducted 52 interviews between January and April 2019 with representatives of different sustainability groups at the university across six domains (research, education, administration, operations, connectivity and students). Findings The authors find that McGill University has a centralized system with a low density. The network is centralized around the Office of Sustainability. The limited cross-domain interaction appears to be a result of differences in motivation and priorities. This leads to a network that has many actors but only a limited number of connections between them. The quality of the relationships is often utilitarian, with only a few relationships aiming for support and mutual growth. Originality/value This study brings together social network analysis, sustainability transformation and higher education in a new way. It also illustrates the complexity of guiding a large organization, such as a university, toward a sustainability transformation. Furthermore, it reveals the importance of considering each part of the university as part of an interconnected network rather than as isolated components.

An undergraduate peer mentoring program at a Canadian university: Impact on student learning as perceived by instructors, peer mentors, and students

Large undergraduate courses make it difficult for students to achieve learning outcomes, in part due to the lack of resources available to course instructors to support student learning in these intimidating and often impersonal settings. One way to support instructor teaching and student learning is the implementation of undergraduate peer mentoring programs, which capitalize on the Students-as-Partners framework. Undergraduate mentors’ relatability to their peers and their mastery of the course content make them excellent resources. This paper describes the development and implementation of a university-wide undergraduate peer mentoring program at McGill University in Canada and its impact on student learning as perceived by three populations: instructors, peer mentors, and students. Data on perceived learning was gathered through qualitative surveys. This case study presents one implementation model that may guide and inform the implementation of similar programs at other higher education institutions.
