Purpose study aims to investigate the implementation and impact of a just-in-time (JIT) system in a food manufacturing and exporting company in Thailand. Design/methodology/approach At the company, the authors used an anomaly case study. The authors performed content analysis on the data collected through semi-structured interviews and direct observations to determine operational flows through customer order, production and delivery. The authors constructed a framework that helped in mapping current operations and subsequently assessing JIT’s impacts; the authors reported the best practices to the company’s owner. Based on the follow-up after a year, the authors used an abductive approach to refine the JIT theory using data from case organizations and relevant studies. Findings The company encountered errors and delays in international delivery owing to inadequate inputs resulting from uncertain agricultural production, delayed contact with freight forwarders, improper documentation and insufficient staffing. Besides the highly centralized system, the limitations of the JIT philosophy contributed to the issues, thereby increasing mental and physical health problems and turnover rate. Owing to these paradoxical effects, the authors extended the JIT theory. Of the study’s several recommendations, the company observed only the following: contacting the freight forwarder after the purchase order confirmation, not production completion. The authors observed increased customer satisfaction, despite the additional cost of booking containers early. Originality/value This research presents a balanced JIT that can minimize JIT’s impacts and resource shortage, owing to demand-supply uncertainties and sustain competitiveness.

Purchase order financing (POF) and buyer direct financing (BDF) are both innovative financing schemes aiming to help financial constrained suppliers secure financing for production. In this paper, we investigate the interaction mechanism between suppliers’ financing strategy selection and manufacturers’ loans offering strategy adoption under two innovative financing schemes. We developed an evolutionary game model to effectively investigate the interaction mechanism between suppliers and manufacturers and analyzed the evolutionary stable strategies of the game model. Then we used system dynamics to present the performance of the evolutionary game model and took a sensitivity analysis to verify the theoretical results. The main conclusions are as follows: in the supply chain, to deal with the noncooperation among suppliers and manufacturers on innovative financing schemes, the revenue of manufacturers, the rate of manufacturer loan, and the proper financial risk factor should be relatively high.

Surfactant deficiency in newborns is a result of a respiratory insufficiency condition, which is a major cause of illness and death. In terms of maintaining vital functions that require emergency intervention, it is crucial that surfactant is available for treatment upon request. The unknown times between patient arrivals and the patients’ stochastic weight changes in the hospital cause difficulties in determining the surfactant doses needed. The surfactant dose treatment for patients must be calculated according to the patient’s weight. In this study, a mathematical model that minimizes the purchase, order, holding, and waste costs of the surfactant has been developed while finding the optimum vial by considering random variables such as the time between a patient’s arrival and weight changes. With cost and demand affecting each other, the model uses a continuous inventory control policy, including calculating how much each preparation and vial should be used for, the reorder point, and the optimum order quantity. Also, the validity of the optimum values obtained with the mathematical model of a 66-bed neonatal intensive care unit in a hospital was tested with real data.

Supply Chain Finance (SCF) faces the complex problem of implementing inventory, purchase order and accounts receivable financing automation in terms of transaction data trust and validation. This paper aims to explore how blockchain technology adoption solves the SCF problem using a multi-case method based on the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM). With purposive sampling, 30 cases were selected on the criteria of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use in solving SCF problems. The results show that trust, validity and distributed ledger transaction data as perceived usefulness are the main drivers of blockchain adoption because it provides solutions to SCF automation problems such as Know Your Customer (KYC), accounting, and transaction settlement. Smart contracts offer easy and fast transactions such as in L/C export processing as perceived ease to use. Of the 30 blockchain projects, 21 offer the usefulness of automated accounts receivable financing, 15 offer easy-to-use purchase order financing and 8 offer easy-to-use inventory financing processes. This study provides the current state of blockchain technology adoption by exploring 30 real application cases in SCF globally. Blockchain advantages provide automation solutions in global supply SCF practices with smart contracts, transparency and security of distributed ledger data feature.

The most important minority shareholder remedy is the unfairly prejudicial petition under Companies Act 2006 (CA 2006), s 994. This chapter examines petitioning on the grounds of unfair prejudice; the boundaries to unfairly prejudicial conduct; the court’s power to grant relief; and petitioning for a winding-up order on the just and equitable ground under IA 1986, s 122(1)(g). The extensive case law on the section is considered in detail. The courts look to breaches of the terms on which the business should be conducted including breaches of the CA 2006, but also breaches of the agreements underlying the parties’ relationships. Such underlying commitments are most commonly found in quasi-partnerships. The chapter examines the quasi-partnership in detail. The remedy most commonly provided by the court is a purchase order and the chapter looks at the valuation issues around such orders. It also considers the alternative remedy of a winding up on the just and equitable ground.
