Laminate structures composed of stiff plates and thin soft interlayers are widely used in aerospace, automotive and civil engineering encouraging the development of reliable non-destructive strategies for their condition assessment. In the paper, elastodynamic behaviour of such laminate structures is investigated with emphasis on its application in ultrasonic based NDT and SHM for the identification of interlayer mechanical and interfacial contact properties. A particular attention is given to the practically important frequency range, in which the wavelength considerably exceeds the thickness of the film. Three layer model with spring-type boundary conditions employed for imperfect contact simulation is used for numerical investigation. Novel effective boundary conditions are derived via asymptotic expansion technique and used for analysis of the peculiar properties of elastic guided waves in considered laminates. It is revealed that the thin and soft film influences the behaviour of the laminate mainly via the effective stiffnesses being a combination of the elastic moduli of the film, its thickness and interface stiffnesses. To evaluate each of these parameters separately (or to figure out that the available experimental data are insufficient), a step-wise procedure employing the effective boundary conditions is proposed and tested versus the laser Doppler vibrometry data for Lamb waves in Aluminium/Polymer film/Alumunium structure. The possibility of using film-related thickness resonance frequencies to estimate the film properties and contact quality is also demonstrated. Additionally, the rich family of edge waves is also investigated, and the splitting of fundamental edge waves into pairs is revealed.

The problem of Rayleigh waves in compressible orthotropic elastic half-space overlaid by a thin elastic layer of which principal material axes are coincident have been researched by many scientists. However, the problem with the conditions that the half-space and the layer have only one common principal material axis that perpendicular to the layer while the remains are not identical has not gotten enough attention. This paper presents a traditional approach to obtain an approximate secular equation by approximately replacing the thin layer by effective boundary conditions of third-order. The wave then is considered as a Rayleigh wave propagating in an orthotropic half-space, without coating, subjected to the effective boundary conditions. This explicit approximate secular equation is potentially useful in non-damage assessment studies.

The paper studies the effective boundary of the minimum risk portfolio in the conditions of hybrid uncertainty. For the case of a two-dimensional portfolio, with a restriction on the expected return of the portfolio and a restriction on possibility/necessity and probability on the return of the portfolio, quasi-effective portfolio boundaries are constructed depending on the probability level. The results of numerical experiments are consistent with the theoretical results previously obtained by the authors.

In the development of micro/nano fluid control systems, fluid resistance has always been one of the key factors restricting its development. According to previous studies, it is found that the boundary slip effect of the solid-liquid interface can effectively reduce the resistance of the microfluid and improve the transport efficiency of the microfluid. The boundary slip length is mainly affected by surface wettability, roughness, and surface charge density. Among them, the influence mechanism of surface charge density on the boundary slip is the most complicated, and there is a lack of relevant research, and further investigation is needed. In this paper, we present research on quantification of effective slip length and surface charge density, where the roughness effect is considered. The electrostatic and hydrodynamic force data obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements were fitted and processed for comparative analysis. We obtained the variation of surface charge density and effective slip length when different oleophobic surface samples were immersed in ethylene glycol with different pH values. The effect of pH on the surface charge density and effective slip length was investigated by their variations. The mechanism of the effect of pH on the surface charge density was discussed. The experimental results show that in the ethylene glycol solution, no matter whether the pH value of the solution increases or decreases, the charge density of the surface with the same properties decreases, and the effective boundary slip length also shows a downward trend. In deionized water, the surface charge density and effective boundary slip length decreases with the decrease of PH value.

In engineering disciplines, many important problems are to be formed as boundary value problems (BVPs) that have conditions that are specified at the extremes. To handle such problems, the conventional shooting method that transforms BVPs into initial value problems has been extensively used, but it does not always guarantee solving the problem due to the possible failure of finding a proper initial guess. This paper proposes a universal initial guess finder that is composed of Bézier functions. Various dimensional problems that include Lambert’s problem for several orbits around the spherically symmetric Earth are studied to validate the efficacy of the proposed approach, and the results are compared.

Liquid lubricants are critical to enable long-life operation of high-performance machinery, such as geared actuators employed in robotics. In space applications, actuator gearboxes must operate in low temperatures, where liquid lubricants face inherent problems related to low temperature rheology. Heaters are relied upon to provide acceptable gearbox temperatures. Unfortunately, heating is energy-intense and does not scale well with increasing mechanism mass and performance. Effective boundary lubrication (BL), on the other hand, can minimize problems of low temperature rheology. BL relies on tribofilm formation over conventional fluid film separation. Effective space grade boundary lubricants can potentially allow for drastically reduced amounts of oil and the accompanying rheological problems. In this work, we describe the design of a methodology to evaluate and analyze tribology of actuator gearboxes operated under cryogenic oil-starved conditions in N2 atmosphere. The devised methodology enables research pertinent to space actuator tribology by accelerated testing and advanced analysis, as demonstrated by a lubricant candidate case study. Complementary microscopy techniques are discussed, and a novel methodology devised for gear internal microstructure analysis by X-ray microtomography (XMT) is presented.
