Background: Molecular markers are the landmarks on DNA that identifies a particular sequence of base pairs coding for a character. SCAR (Sequenced Characterized Amplified Region) markers are proving to be more effective in identification of genotypes as they are PCR based co-dominant markers. In view of plant variety registration under PPV and FRA, 2001 molecular characterization/ identification of the variety is essential to ascertain the trueness of the variety, hence present studies have been planned and executed. Methods: In present investigation CGMS based chilli hybrid UARChH42 and its parental lines were identified using molecular techniques. A line, B line, R line and hybrid seedlings were used for DNA extraction and characterized on the basis of polymorphism with respect to sterility or fertility by using SCAR markers. Result: P1 and P2 and coxII-SCAR which are sterility specific markers could amplify A line and hybrid showing a definite band. CRF-SCAR 870 is a fertility specific marker amplified R line and hybrid. Also CMS-SCAR 130 and CMS-SCAR 130/140 were able to identified A line, B line, R line and hybrid. Two of the markers viz. orf-456-SCAR atp6-SCAR and were not able to specify any case of parental lines or hybrid identification. Hybridity of UARChH42 (JCH42) chilli hybrid was determined by any similarity in the banding pattern with any of its parent. This study would help in the fulfillment of the requirements of protection of plant varieties and farmers’ rights authority (PPVFRA), New Delhi for registration purpose.

Syzygium filiforme var. filiforme is a plant variety from dicotyledonous plant family (Myrtaceae). Phytochemical studies on S. filiforme var. filiforme stem bark have successfully isolated and characterized arjunolic acid (1), alphitolic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), ursolic acid (4), ursolic acid 3-methyl ester (5), β-sitosterol (6) and stigmasterol (7). The inhibitory activities against free radical, starch, and bacteria for major compounds were tested by using DPPH, α-glucosidase and minimum inhibitory and bacterial concentration assays, respectively. No promising antioxidant activity was shown on tested samples except methanolic crude extract. For antidiabetic activity, methanolic and dichloromethane crude extracts displayed potent activity compared to 1-deoxynojirimycin. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bacterial concentration (MBC) assays for antibacterial activity were evaluated on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. All crude extracts and major compounds displayed weak and no promising activities for MIC method, respectively. Meanwhile, for MBC method, hexane crude extract and compound 1 showed inhibition against B. subtilis.

In-field infection of maize (Zea mays L.) ears by the fungus Aspergillus flavus Link:Fr causes pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination of maize grain. Germplasm lines with host-plant resistance to aflatoxin accumulation are available to breeders, but these lines often possess undesirable agronomic characteristics. Commercial lines with expired plant variety protection (ex-PVP lines) are a potential source of elite germplasm available to public maize breeders. A diallel cross containing three aflatoxin-accumulation-resistant germplasm lines and seven ex-PVP lines were evaluated in replicated trials for aflatoxin contamination after artificial inoculation and for yield. The resistant germplasm lines Mp313E, Mp715, and Mp717 were the only lines with significant general combining ability (GCA) for reduced aflatoxin accumulation. Of the ex-PVP lines evaluated, the Stiff-Stalk line F118 was the most promising line to use in breeding crosses. Based on its GCA, it was the only ex-PVP line that did not significantly increase aflatoxin and the only ex-PVP line that significantly increased yield. Second-cycle breeding lines derived from crosses between F118 and the resistant donor lines will be valuable if they combine the donor lines’ disease resistance with F118’s earlier maturity while introgressing the disease resistance into a genetic background that aligns with the industry’s well-defined heterotic groups.

Abstract A field experiment was carried out at the second agricultural research and experiment station of the College of Agriculture, Muthanna University, for the 2019-2020 agricultural season, with the randomized complete block design RCBD, using two factors and three repeats, that’s to study the effect of adding the bio inoculant from Bacillus megaterium bacteria, and when loaded the bacterium with the immobilization inoculation technology on zeolite, sodium alginate, Agarose and bentonite and it’s symboled of M0, M1, M2 and M3 respectively to compare its efficiency in increasing potassium available and growth of wheat plant variety Eba’a 99. The experiment included two comparison treatments, the first being B0 without the addition of the bacterial inoculant and the second comparative treatment being B1 adding the bacterial vaccine. At the end of the experiment, potassium concentration was estimated in soil after cultivation. The results showed a clear moral effect of the use of the immobilized bacterial inoculant in Nitrogen available at a 15.65 (mg N kg−1 soil) and with an increase of 17.14%, Potassium available at a 289.2 (mg K kg−1 soil) and an increase of 6.79%, and the plant height was a rate of 84.87 cm and an increase of 9.41% and bio yield at 810.25 kg dunum−1 and an increase of 34.98%.

The current study sets out to analyse the concept of "essentially derived variety" (EDV) envisaged by the plant variety protection regime when new breeding techniques (NBTs) are employed in the development of new plant varieties. The use of NBTs to develop new plant varieties has grown rapidly over the last years because of their ease of use and their high efficiency. NBT varieties are mono-parental and retain most of the genome of the initial variety, thus most of its essential characteristics. The problem arises when the initial variety used as the source of genetic variation is a variety protected by a plant variety right. In this case, the question is whether the EDV concept should apply to the second variety obtained by NBTs and what can break the EDV chain. It must be noted that the EDV concept has revolutionised the plant variety protection system since it introduced the principle of "limited dependence" as an exception to the general independence principle governing this system. Therefore, as it is an exception, it should be interpreted rigorously.

Abstract Plant varieties protection is one of intellectual property rights branches providing protection to breeders, a people who carries out research and testing or the activity of discovering and developing a plant variety to produce new variety. In addition, it also known local varieties, namely varieties that already exist and are cultivated from generation to generation by farmers, and belong to the community. Varieties cannot be protected if one of them on the contrary to the environmental sustainability. On the other hand, the environment is one of the problems faced by the people of Bangka Belitung Islands until now, especially when it is associated with mining activities. This empirical juridical research method analyzes how the impact of environmental protection and management efforts towards the efforts to protect plant varieties in the Bangka Belitung Islands. The result of the research indicates that the damaged environment due to massive mining has implications to the protection of plant varieties in this area. The clearing of land plots and housing that has been happening lately also has implications, either cleared or built on land that was originally primary forest or built on land that was originally a plantation consisting of local varieties.
