The success of counseling is influenced by the ability of the counselor to implement it. Among the basic abilities of a counselor are mind skills. These help the counselor to construct and control their thoughts in providing excellent counseling services to the counselee. This research employed a cross-sectional survey design with an ex post-facto quantitative approach, which was intended to determine the level of mind skills of students of the Guidance and Counseling Department. The population of this research was the students of the Guidance and Counseling Department, with a total of 114 students. Proportionate random sampling was employed, and a counselor mind skills scale was used to collect the data. The results showed that the students had what can be considered ‘good’ skills in relation to mind skills. Thus, it is necessary to strive to further internalize and optimize the mind skills in the counseling class. Keywords: mind skills, counselor, counseling

Listening ability determines the success of counseling sessions. Counselors must be able to listen to the various problems presented by their participants wholeheartedly. This research aims to illustrate the ability of emphatic listening among counseling students in Indonesia. This descriptive quantitative study involved 318 participants (88.7% women) aged 18-23 years (M= 19.24, SD=1.108) voluntarily selected through convenience sampling. The emphatic listening skills were measured using The Active-Emphatic Listening Scale by Bodie (2011) using Google Form. Based on statistical analysis, it was found that empathic listening to counseling students was classified as high. The study also argues that there are differences in empathy learning skills based on the environment in which they live. At the same time, differences in sex, age, and study year did not determine differences in listening empathetically. This study confirmed that the environment in which a person grows up has implications for empathy.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in many universities moving abruptly from face-to-face to online instruction. One group of students involved in this transition was master’s-level counseling students. Their experiential group counseling training (EGCT) program started in a face-to-face format and abruptly transitioned to an online format because of COVID-19. In this phenomenological study, we examined these students’ experiences of participating and leading in six face-to-face and four online EGCT groups. Two focus groups were conducted, and three major themes emerged: positive participation attributes, participation-inhibiting attributes, and suggestions for group counseling training. The findings point to additional learning and skill development through the online group experience as well as its utility as a safe space to process the novel experience brought about by COVID-19.

Stigma and discrimination against persons with mental disorder has been a global issue. The negative impacts of this includes serious barrier to supportive government policies and detrimental effects to the quality of life of the stigmatized persons. Earlier studies suggest that stigma has been observed among professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, and counselors. This research aims to understand how students of related academic fields such as medicine, psychology, and counseling regard persons with schizophrenia as measured by the Bogardus Social Distance Scale. The study was conducted to 230 students studying in health-related fields (Medicine, Psychology, and Counseling students). Analysis of data were conducted with an independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Simple Regression techniques. The results show that students from the health-related field have serious issues with stigma. The majority of the students are not willing to include a person with schizophrenia as their family member or caregiver. Students who have had earlier contact them tend to have lower stigma. However, students who have family members with schizophrenia have a higher stigma. The medical students tend to have higher stigma compared to psychology and other students.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been going on for more than a year in Indonesia. Positive and death rates vary over time. The government has issued several policies regarding the prevention of the transmission of this disease, one of which is vaccination. The level of public confidence in the effectiveness of the vaccine is still very low. Unfortunately, Indonesian people often get wrong information from online media, so the vaccination coverage rate is still very far from the expectation of achieving herd immunity. The current young generation during the pandemic is spending more time using social media as a means of communication. However, not many youths use social media as a means of disseminating correct information about vaccination. Information in the form of infographics is usually preferred because it is easier to understand. The community service team felt the need to empower the role of youth to spread the true news about vaccination through social media using infographics. Therefore, the service team collaborated with SMAN 1 Tambun Selatan, Bekasi to provide training on making infographics and counseling about vaccination as part of the new way of life after the pandemic. Training and counseling are carried out in one Zoom forum. After the training and counseling students were asked to make infographics about the Covid-19 vaccination and upload them to their respective social media accounts. There is an increase in the skills of making infographics and knowledge about vaccination. It is hoped that these students will continue to be creative in making infographics to share on social media about current issues.
