AbstractMobile station (MS) localization in a cellular network is appealing to both industrial community and academia, due to the wide applications of location-based services. The main challenge is the unknown one-bound (OB) and multiple-bound (MB) scattering environment in dense multipath environment. Moreover, multiple base stations (BSs) are required to be involved in the localization process, and the precise time synchronization between MS and BSs is assumed. In order to address these problems, hybrid time of arrival (TOA), angle of departure (AOD), and angle of arrival (AOA) measurement model from the serving BS with the synchronization error is investigated in this paper. In OB scattering environment, four linear least square (LLS), one quadratic programming and data fusion-based localization algorithms are proposed to eliminate the effect of the synchronization error. In addition, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of our localization model on the root mean-square error (RMSE) is derived. In hybrid OB and MB scattering environment, a novel double identification algorithm (DIA) is proposed to identify the MB path. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are capable to deal with the synchronization error, and LLS-based localization algorithms show better localization accuracy. Furthermore, the DIA can correctly identify the MB path, and the RMSE comparison of different algorithms further prove the effectiveness of the DIA.

Abstract The present current differential protection for MMC-HVDC transmission lines has absolute selectivity and powerful ability to withstand high transition resistance, while it is easily affected by distributed capacitive current and data synchronization error. To solve the problem above, this article proposes a novel current differential protection scheme. The distributed capacitive current can be calculated by integrating the linear voltage distribution in real-time. Thus, the differential value of the midpoint currents of DC line, which are calculated based on the low-pass filtered measure voltages and currents on both sides, can be adopted to identify the fault. Besides, the data synchronization error can be eliminated based on the waveform matching of the calculated midpoint currents. This novel current differential protection has excellent performance and can solve the problems of traditional current differential protection for HVDC lines.

This paper studies the synchronization of two different fractional-order chaotic systems through the fractional-order control method, which can ensure that the synchronization error converges to a sufficiently small compact set. Afterwards, the disturbance observer of the synchronization control scheme based on adaptive parameters is designed to predict unknown disturbances. The Lyapunov function method is used to verify the appropriateness of the disturbance observer design and the convergence of the synchronization error, and then the feasibility of the control scheme is obtained. Finally, our simulation studies verify and clarify the proposed method.

In recent years, DNA-based systems have become a promising medium for long-term data storage. There are two layers of errors in DNA-based storage systems. The first is the dropouts of the DNA strands, which has been characterized in the shuffling-sampling channel. The second is insertions, deletions, and substitutions of nucleotides in individual DNA molecules. In this paper, we describe a DNA noisy synchronization error channel to characterize the errors in individual DNA molecules. We derive non-trivial lower and upper capacity bounds of the DNA noisy synchronization error channel based on information theory. By cascading these two channels, we provide theoretical capacity limits of the DNA storage system. These results reaffirm that DNA is a reliable storage medium with high storage density potential.

A previous study reported the unique finding that people tapping a beat pattern with the right hand produce larger negative synchronization error than when tapping with the left hand or other effectors, in contrast to previous studies that have shown that the hands tap patterns simultaneously without any synchronization errors. We examined whether the inter-hand difference in synchronization error occurred due to handedness or to a specificity of the beat pattern employed in that study. Two experiments manipulated the hand–beat assignments. A comparison between the identical beat to the pacing signal and a beat with a longer interval excluded the handedness hypothesis and demonstrated that beat patterns with relatively shorter intervals were tapped earlier (Experiment 1). These synchronization errors were not local but occurred consistently throughout the beat patterns. Experiment 2 excluded alternative explanations. These results indicate that the apparent inconsistency in previous studies was due to the specificity of the beat patterns, suggesting that a beat pattern with a relatively shorter interval between hands is tapped earlier than beats with longer intervals. Our finding that the bimanual tapping of different beat patterns produced different synchronization errors suggests that the notion of a central timing system may need to be revised.
