Entering a classroom that embraces the workshop model is like walking into a galaxy of magic. You could feel a sense of wonder as teachers and learners examine new skills and strategies and feel a thrill as students are empowered to move towards independence. It's a framework that builds human connection and cultivates relationships; it honors authentic literature and relevant learning experiences. During the pandemic, the essence of the workshop environment was compromised. There were barriers that prevented teachers and students from communicating in the same ways. This chapter delves into how to shift the gradual release of the workshop model to blended/hybrid/hyflex learning environments; it will explore how to invite change, rally learners, examine non-negotiables in physical and virtual spaces, and honor the framework. It will look at utilizing digital platforms efficiently, setting expectations, and creating spaces where all learners are valued. When learners are the heart of decision making, the magic of the workshop model has the potential to live on in any environment!

Best Practice dilakukan berdasarkan urgensi penguatan pembelajaran literasi dan numerasi dengan melibatkan enam sekolah binaan pada SMA di Kota Yogyakarta. Model Gradual Release of Responsibility mengaktualisasikan pelepasan tanggung jawab secara bertahap, meliputi langkah: 1) focused lesson, 2) Guided Instruction, 3) Collaborative Learning, dan 4) Individual Work untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan guru dalam pembelajaran literasi dan numerasi. Analisis data menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman guru tentang literasi dalam pembelajaran dari 56% menjadi 69%, atau meningkat 13%.  Sementara itu, pemahahaman guru tentang numerasi dalam pembelajaran merangkak dari 36% menjadi 61%, meningkat 25%. Keterampilan guru dalam menyusun perencanaan pembelajaran literasi mengalami peningkatan sebesar 15%, dari 70% menjadi 85%.  Keterampilan guru dalam perencanaan pembelajaran numerasi mengalami peningkatan tajam sebesar 35%, dari 38% menjadi 75%. Data ini menunjukkan pembimbingan dengan model Gradual Release of Responsibility berdampak signifikan walaupun belum mencapai hasil optimal. Kendala dalam pelaksanaan pembimbingan ditemukan berkaitan dengan terbatasnya waktu akibat bersamaan dengan kegiatan penuntasan vaksin bagi guru dan siswa serta persiapan pembelajaran tatap muka terbatas. Terbatasnya literatur tentang implementasi model Gradual Release of Responsibility dalam kepengawasan sekolah menjadikan hasil dan temuan best practice ini sebagai wawasan baru dan merupakan kebaruan yang sangat bermanfaat baik dalam tataran praktek maupun teori. Selanjutnya direkomendasikan bagi pengawas dan sekolah untuk mengadopsi model Gradual Release of Responsibility baik untuk pembimbingan guru maupun siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan literasi dan numerasi.

This study was carried out to optimize formulation for Heracleum Lasiopetalum (golpar) extract nanoencapsulation by response surface methodology (RSM). The primary emulsion was fabricated by (5-10 %) golpar extract (GE), (40-35 %) emulsifier span 80 (EM), and (50-60 %) sunflower oil (SO). The coating materials of nanoencapsulation were the composition of Lepidium sativum seed gum (LSG) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) at different ratios (1:0, 1:1, and 0:1). The yield of nanoencapsulation of golpar extract, particle size, and zeta potential was investigated as responses of RSM. The optimal formulation for nanoencapsulation of golpar extract were SO: 50.46%, GE 9.52%, and EM: 36.30% in LSG, SO: 57.07%, GE: 7.12%, and EM: 30.85% in LSG:WPC, and SO: 54.98%, GE: 9.05%, and EM: 39.87% in WPC coating. In conclusion, the nanoencapsulation of golpar extract prepared with the optimized formulation by RSM ensures the gradual release and sedimentation during storage with nanometric size and high yield of encapsulation. The nanocapsules of golpar extract can be used as a natural antioxidant in food systems.

The essential oil component α-pinene has multiple biological activities. However, its application is limited owing to its volatility, low aqueous solubility, and chemical instability. For the aim of improving its physicochemical properties, α-pinene was encapsulated in conventional liposomes (CLs) and drug-in-cyclodextrin-in-liposomes (DCLs). Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin/α-pinene (HP-β-CD/α-pinene) inclusion complexes were prepared in aqueous solution, and the optimal solubilization of α-pinene occurred at HP-β-CD:α-pinene molar ratio of 7.5:1. The ethanol-injection method was applied to produce different formulations using saturated (Phospholipon 90H) or unsaturated (Lipoid S100) phospholipids in combination with cholesterol. The size, the phospholipid and cholesterol incorporation rates, the encapsulation efficiency (EE), and the loading rate (LR) of α-pinene were determined, and the storage stability of liposomes was assessed. The results showed that α-pinene was efficiently entrapped in CLs and DCLs with high EE values. Moreover, Lipoid S100 CLs displayed the highest LR (22.9 ± 2.2%) of α-pinene compared to the other formulations. Both carrier systems HP-β-CD/α-pinene inclusion complex and Lipoid S100 CLs presented a gradual release of α-pinene. Furthermore, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of α-pinene was maintained upon encapsulation in Lipoid S100 CLs. Finally, it was found that all formulations were stable after three months of storage at 4 °C.

This study is a mixed-methods exploratory study of a Spanish Home Language Arts (HLA) pilot curriculum designed for Students with Interrupted Education (SIFE) as it was implemented across six different schools in New York State during the 2019–2020 school year before the onset of COVID-19. The focus of the study was to observe whether the HLA curriculum improved teacher practice in the increased use of the gradual release of responsibility and the curriculum-prescribed protocols. Another goal was to examine whether the use of the curriculum helped to improve student writing and bilingual literacy. A final goal of the study was to survey teachers on their perceptions of the curriculum, especially in how the lesson design fostered student engagement and collaboration with others. The results of the internal evaluation showed that the teachers improved in their practice, especially in the areas of gradual release and increased student time on task. The students were able to develop specific text analysis and writing skills using instructional protocols used in the home language and in English that were transferable across classroom contexts. In addition, the lessons encouraged students to leverage literacy skills and background knowledge in Spanish as a way to support learning new skills in both Spanish and English. Finally, the study showed that the use of the curriculum increased student engagement and collaboration in the classroom.

Film-forming systems (FFSs) were developed by using Eudragit® E100 as a film former. Kaempferia parviflora (black ginger) extract was used as an anti-inflammatory agent for aphthous ulcers. The FFS could rapidly form a thin film in only 5 s when it was applied to a wet surface e.g. an aphthous ulcer. When the FFS was applied to a dry surface, the FFS without extract could form a film in 2-4 min. The incorporation of this extract contributed to delaying the film-formation time in the dry state; hence, the film-forming time increased to 6-8 min. The mucoadhesive property of FFSs was verified with the wash-off method. To simulate oromucosal conditions, the FFSs were applied on a cellophane membrane coated with mucin and washed by phosphate buffer of pH 6.8. The formulations without mucoadhesive polymers could not withstand flushing with a medium for more than 8 min without dislodging. Therefore, three different mucoadhesive agents were trialed: PVP K90, HPMC E15 LV, and HPC SL. The highest adhesion results were obtained when HPMC was added at 5%(w/w) as well as, the residence time was 22 min. In vitro release of black ginger extract from FFS showed a gradual release for 2 h. This study indicated that the FFS with HPMC E15 LV was an appropriate alternative formulation as a local delivery system for an aphthous ulcer.

The objective of this work was to develop a chitosan/agar-agar bioplastic film incorporated with bacteriocin that presents active potential when used as food packaging. The formulation of the film solution was determined from an experimental design, through the optimization using the desirability function. After establishing the concentrations of the biopolymers and the plasticizer, the purified bacteriocin extract of Lactobacillus sakei was added, which acts as an antibacterial agent. The films were characterized through physical, chemical, mechanical, barrier, and microbiological analyses. The mechanical properties and water vapor permeability were not altered by the addition of the extract. The swelling property decreased with the addition of the extract and the solubility increased, however, the film remained intact when in contact with the food, thus allowing an efficient barrier. Visible light protection was improved by increased opacity and antibacterial capacity was effective. When used as Minas Frescal cream cheese packaging, it contributed to the increase of microbiological stability, showing a reduction of 2.62 log UFC/g, contributing a gradual release of the active compound into the food during the storage time. The film had an active capacity that could be used as a barrier to the food, allowing it to be safely packaged.

Polyphenols play a therapeutic role in vascular diseases, acting in inherent illness-associate conditions such as inflammation, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and oxidative stress, as demonstrated by clinical trials and epidemiological surveys. The main polyphenol cardioprotective mechanisms rely on increased nitric oxide, decreased asymmetric dimethylarginine levels, upregulation of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes via the Nrf2-ARE pathway and anti-inflammatory action through the redox-sensitive transcription factor NF-κB and PPAR-γ receptor. However, poor polyphenol bioavailability and extensive metabolization restrict their applicability. Polyphenols carried by nanoparticles circumvent these limitations providing controlled release and better solubility, chemical protection, and target achievement. Nano-encapsulate polyphenols loaded in food grade polymers and lipids appear to be safe, gaining resistance in the enteric route for intestinal absorption, in which the mucoadhesiveness ensures their increased uptake, achieving high systemic levels in non-metabolized forms. Nano-capsules confer a gradual release to these compounds, as well as longer half-lives and cell and whole organism permanence, reinforcing their effectiveness, as demonstrated in pre-clinical trials, enabling their application as an adjuvant therapy against cardiovascular diseases. Polyphenol entrapment in nanoparticles should be encouraged in nutraceutical manufacturing for the fortification of foods and beverages. This study discusses pre-clinical trials evaluating how nano-encapsulate polyphenols following oral administration can aid in cardiovascular performance.

PurposeThis paper examines how intentional mathematics coaching practices can develop teacher professional noticing of “ambitious teaching practices” (NCTM, 2020) through connected, collaborative coaching cycles.Design/methodology/approachNarrative analysis is used to examine observations of a mathematics coach and novice teacher to better understand the role of the coach in helping teachers attend to ambitious mathematics teaching (AMT) practices.FindingsThe initial findings of this study suggest that intentional use of focused goals, iterative coaching cycles and a gradual release model of coaching can support shifts in noticing of AMT from being led by the coach to being facilitated by the teacher.Originality/valueThis study offers new insights into the functions of mathematics coaching that can foster shifts in teacher noticing and practice toward AMT. It contributes to the literature on what mathematics coaching looks and sounds like in the context of conversations with teachers, as well as the potential influence that structured, intentional, ongoing coaching supports can have on teacher noticing.
