Although recent policies in education in Brazil have included sexuality as an important theme to be discussed in the classroom, it still has not effectively created an educational context where sexuality can be discussed in a positive, non-discriminatory and culturally/historically sensitive way. This article aims at contributing to the development of training programs for sexual educators, specifically for those who are concerned with the inclusion of non-normative sexualities in the educational context. Drawing on social constructionist ideas, we have delineated a model for a training program for sexual educators in which two themes - relational engagement and focus on the process - set the context for a transformation in education. First, we offer a brief review of sexual education in Brazil. Next, we introduce the notion of "intelligibility communities" and "dialogue," as useful concepts for exploring educational alternatives. These two concepts allow us to discuss how values are generated and how they play into our accounts about what we consider to be real and good. Finally, inspired by one of our training programs, we illustrate some ways in which these theoretical resources can be used in training activities.

In the recent years, major economic developments have occurred in rural Alaska that have permanently changed the social, political and institutional landscape. The 150 Eskimo, Indian and Aleut communities have borne the brunt of these changes. Few have had available to them the indigenous human resources, the technical skills and educational preparation necessary to assume full control over these forces. In 1980 the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in cooperation with several native organisations, successfully approached the Bernard van Leer Foundation with a proposal to assist Alaska Native communities in developing their own capacity to shape their future. This is the story of how the ‘Van Leer Project’ has attempted to respond to those developments.

AbstractDuring the Intifada (1987–1993) Israel has closed educational institutions in the Territories as part of its coping with the rising violence. This paper analyses the ramifications of closing those institutions, on Palestinian society, its reaction to it and the changes which occurred as a result. In the short run, the Palestinian society has tried to find educational alternatives to the official frameworks; classrooms were opened out of school area and new curriculums were produced. But in the long run, the ramifications were most severe: a decrease in the academic levels and achievements brought universities in Arab countries to refuse to admit students from the territories; students dropped out of schools; and above all, changes in students’ behavior led to significant changes in the Palestinian society. Among them: a decrease in the status and influence of traditional figures, a rise in the level of violence among teenagers and religious radicalization amidst the youth.

Recent articles on behavior analysis have suggested that the field is drifting in several unfortunate directions, becoming less laboratory-based, less analytic, and more technical, at the expense of conceptual rigor. A number of authors have suggested that one countercontrol to these trends is a return to an animal-based laboratory-apprenticeship model of behavioral education. The present article contends that this model is now unworkable for a number of disciplines utilizing applied behavior analysis and some educational alternatives more viable for incorporation into the curricula of non-psychological human service professions are proposed.
