Sustainability of the workforce becomes a crucial issue, of which responsible care for employees can increase job satisfaction and human capital that impact corporate ability to absorb and generate new knowledge. Firms are obligated to provide a healthy and safe working environment for their employees, but it may in turn hinder innovation due to rigid and structured institutional regulations. Drawing on data of 308 China’s pharmaceutical firms from 2010 to 2017, we investigated whether employee care can trigger innovation under corporate adoption of the occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). Our results suggest that both employee care and OHSMS adoption have a positive impact on innovation. Moreover, the positive relationship between employee care and innovation was more pronounced in firms that had adopted the OHSMS certification. These findings are valuable to policymakers and corporate managers in emerging economies through corroborating the important role of workforce sustainability in facilitating firm innovation.

<p>In recent years in building construction site construction workers due to the complexity, the project construction period, the working environment is poor, the construction process hazard and more security-conscious workers partial bottom. When accidents occur, such as by falling, falling objects wounding, electric shock, earthmoving collapse, overturning and other machinery, causing casualties, to construction companies and property losses caused by the economy to varying degrees. Throughout its reasons, one is security responsibilities are not clear, safety supervision and management system is not perfect, the other is the weakening of the internal management of construction enterprises, especially flawed construction site management, lack of effective security measures, the responsibility is not implemented, management personnel and operations personnel have not performed the necessary education and training, lack of knowledge of security technologies, illegal command, illegal operation.</p>

Abstract The vital purpose of this research work is to examine the impacts of occupational health and safety management on employee's performance. It aims to investigate the nexus between the practice of OHS, safe working environment and performance of employees. The research work adopt a descriptive approach to scrutinize the contributions of provision of adequate health and safety equipment to performance of employees at Ardova Plc. Aside collecting primary data from the staffs of Ardova Plc in Lagos State cutting across diverse socio-economic class, simple random sampling was utilised in the study using 90 questionnaires to collect the primary data. However, descriptive data was therefore analyzed using Statistical Tool to show the Cross-tabulation, correlation and Chi-Square Test. The research study concludes that practice of occupational health and safety management can boost employee performance, and further suggest some policy recommendations.

Any approach to occupational health must acknowledge that accidents in the workplace result in many injuries. Construction, agriculture, and primary extraction are the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries, but many more minor injuries result from all types of work. Health and safety law has developed with an emphasis on accident prevention that is based on designing and managing the working environment. Establishing this approach to safety management begins with an organization committing itself to a policy influenced by legal obligations and current good practice. While this chapter draws heavily on the UK situation, where there has been considerable experience and development of approaches to health and safety, it is incumbent on any physician to consider the work environment and whether changes to the workplace might improve not only the lot of their patients, but others potentially at risk in the workplace.

As many pipeline operators embark on the journey of developing a Pipeline Safety Management System (PSMS), the first question is typically, “Where do we begin?” Management systems can be intimidating, and the thought of taking on the task of developing one can seem overwhelming. Companies want to know if it is necessary to start from scratch, if they can use existing processes or programs, and which step to take first for a successful PSMS. There are many ways to begin, but one of the most effective ways is to first ask two questions, “What do we already have?” and “What are our biggest problems?” Armed with these answers, a path forward can be developed, and the foundation for the management system can begin to take shape. One effective way to choose where to begin when developing the PSMS is to determine which elements have been related to the root causes of incidents and near misses in the past. Likewise, continuing to determine and monitor the causes of incidents after the implementation of the PSMS will provide guidance for continual improvement of the management system. Using the elements and sub-elements of existing management system standards or practices, such as API RP 1173, Pipeline Safety Management System Requirements [1], as a starting point for determining root causes is a good way to break down, categorize, and trend the causes of each incident. Combining these with a gap analysis of both the undocumented and documented processes and procedures will provide a basis for determining the priorities for development and implementation of each management system element.

Many accidents occur due to various factors when undertaking construction projects. One of the most important achievements when undertaking a construction project is to accomplish the project without major accidents. This paper studies the effect of stress, fatigue and workload on construction contract worker in term of their safety performance results using the Situation Awareness Rating Technique (SART), with reference to how it relates to the root causes of accidents. Investigating the factors associated with accidents helps to identify and minimize the associated mistakes or causes and reduce or avoid accidents and improve safety performance in construction projects. Data were collected using a SART survey of employee of 18 contractors working on construction of electrical substations in the western area of Saudi Arabia. It was found that most accidents occurred at the worker level because of their lack of awareness and training. It is apparent that SART affects the safety performance of contractors and it varies with the position, age and experience of workers. To implement a safe working environment free of accidents, it is necessary to improve all job levels according to their insufficient area and activate a full safety management system with periodic reviews to improve it and make it more effective.

Implementation of a safety management system (SMS) in automotive manufacturing and assembly has been recognized as an effective way to provide a safe working environment for employees, increase employee morale, and reduce corporate costs. Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. (TMMTX) has implemented a SMS in part of a regional goal initiated by Toyota Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA) to support the OSHA’s Injury & Illness Prevention Program (I2P2). This system provides a systematic way to identify hazards; eliminate or control the risk and incorporate in Toyota Production System. In addition, the established management system provides a framework to meet legal obligations under occupational health and safety regulation. The system implemented provides methods to manage injury and illness related to process safety, ergonomic, and industrial hygiene risks. The system uses joint labor and management teams to identify and evaluate jobs and develop and implement solutions. This paper summarizes the efforts of TMMTX in implementing and maintaining workplace activities that meet the requirements of this safety management system. The methodologies, strategies, and challenges are outlined to provide important links that are critical in sustaining these activities.

Occupational medicine has a long-standing history in the region of the former Yugoslavia with seminal contributions to the theory and practice of this discipline. This tradition should be expanded to incorporate psychosocial stressors. We review the sociological work stress models and empirical evidence gleaned thereby, and then the occupational stressor index, an additive burden model developed from a cognitive ergonomics perspective. In numerous studies, the occupational stressor index is significantly associated with risk behaviors: smoking, obesity and sedentariness and clinical outcomes: hypertension, ischemic heart disease, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes. The occupational stressor index characterizes the work conditions of physicians including surgeons and anesthesiologists; professional drivers and other groups at elevated risk for stress-related disorders. Much of these empirical data are from this region. Work-stress related health disorders are a major public health problem, with enormous human and economic costs. A more proactive role for physicians is needed vis-?-vis our working environment and that of patients. We physicians face a heavy job stressor burden strongly implicated with adverse health outcomes. The challenge is to identify effective strategies to lower the risk of work-stressor related illness. The critical gap is the lack of evidence-based guidelines. Intervention studies are needed in which job stressors are ameliorated as a therapeutic/preventive modality; the logical starting point is within our own profession. We also suggest how the relevant clinical competence could be enhanced. Alongside clinical enhancement should be the full restoration of physician empowerment to implement work-related recommendations. A participatory action research perspective by physicians for physicians and for our patients is needed.

Path planning for autonomous mobile robots is an important task within robotics field. It is common to use one of the two classical approaches in path planning: a global approach when an entire map of a working environment is available for a robot or local methods, which require the robot to detect obstacles with a variety of onboard sensors as the robot traverses the environment. In our previous work, a multi-criteria spline algorithm prototype for a global path construction was developed and tested in Matlab environment. The algorithm used the Voronoi graph for computing an initial path that serves as a starting point of the iterative method. This approach allowed finding a path in all map configurations whenever the path existed. During the iterative search, a cost function with a number of different criteria and associated weights was guiding further path optimization. A potential field method was used to implement some of the criteria. This paper describes an implementation of a modified spline-based algorithm that could be used with real autonomous mobile robots. Equations of the characteristic criteria of a path optimality were further modified. The obstacle map was previously presented as intersections of a finite number of circles with various radii. However, in real world environments, obstacles’ data is a dynamically changing probability map that could be based on an occupancy grid. Moreover, the robot is no longer a geometric point. To implement the spline algorithm and further use it with real robots, the source code of the Matlab environment prototype was transferred into C++ programming language. The testing of the method and the multi criteria cost function optimality was carried out in ROS/Gazebo environment, which recently has become a standard for programming and modeling robotic devices and algorithms. The resulting spline-based path planning algorithm could be used on any real robot, which is equipped with a laser rangefinder. The algorithm operates in real time and the influence of the objective function criteria parameters are available for dynamic tuning during a robot motion.

The situation we are experiencing on a global level and in the domestic environment confirms long-standing warnings that human and planetary survival requires radical changes in the way we think and respond to the demanding problems and challenges of today's society. The COVID19 epidemic has further exacerbated the deterioration. There is too much intolerance, even towards those who, in their moral and professional obligation to humanity and the medical profession, risk their own lives to save the lives and health of others. As social and personal hardships intensify, the dark forces of human character accumulate and destroy interpersonal and social relationships. Due to the increasingly serious consequences, such as psychological and physical violence, discrimination and exclusion in the workplace, a comprehensive and inclusive (integrated, integrative) model of an inclusive and safe work environment is being established worldwide. Inclusive practices have a positive effect on productivity by improving organizational climate and employee motivation, commitment and adherence to business ethics and values of the organization, while reducing turnover and risk of deviance. Therefore, they are often mentioned as the starting point for integrated and connected, integrated business, applicable business ethics and integrity, sustainable social responsibility, and achieving sustainable development goals in the era of new technologies and Industry 4.0. Thus, as part of a tertiary research project, in January 2020 we organised a seminar with a workshop for UKCL employees on a friendly, inclusive and safe working environment. The findings and conclusions are presented in this paper.
