The problem of elastic plastic deformation of a thin-walled pipe under co-binned loading by bending moment, axial force and internal pressure is considered. The problem is solved by the developed method using the Matcad mathematical package by a numerical method based on the deformation theory of plasticity and the momentless theory of shells. To simplify the solution of the problem, it is proposed to reduce a twodimensional problem to a one-dimensional problem about beam deformation, the material of which has different deformation diagrams under compression and tension in the axial direction. Comparison with the results of numerical solution of the two-dimensional problem with the finite element method in the elastic plastic formulation is carried out. The obtained results of the elastic-plastic solution for the bending moment in the pipeline section under combined loading make it possible to clarify criterion ratio of the strength of the pipeline section with an annular defect in the direction of reducing the rejection. Application of the developed approach allows to rank pipeline sections with non-design bending in the steppe close to the limit state under combined loading of the pipeline with bending moment, longitudinal force and internal pressure.

Since the ductility of cast austenitic stainless steel pipes decreases due to thermal aging embrittlement after long term operation, not only plastic collapse failure but also unstable ductile crack propagation (elastic-plastic failure) should be taken into account for the structural integrity assessment of cracked pipes. In the ASME Section XI, the load multiplier (Z-factor) is used to derive the elastic-plastic failure of the cracked components. The Z-factor of cracked pipes under bending load has been obtained without considering the axial load. In this study, the influence of the axial load on Z-factor was quantified through elastic-plastic failure analyses under various conditions. It was concluded that the axial load increased the Z-factor; however, the magnitude of the increase was not significant, particularly for the main coolant pipes of PWR nuclear power plants.

An approximate model for the elastic-plastic analysis of a pipe element under combined loading is developed. The model is obtained by generalizing a limit load solution for combined pressure, bending, torsion and axial load to include strain hardening. For various combinations of loading of tubes, curvatures and twist angles are predicted and compared with experimental results and those predicted by a more rigorous analytical approach. The comparison shows that good results are obtained from the approximate model.

Plasticity in shells is often contained near the ends of a segment where the bending stresses are significant. Outside of this local neighborhood the behavior is elastic. Thus, an axisymmetric shell can be divided along its axis into a purely elastic region away from an end and the local region where plasticity is present. The moment-curvature relation in the elastic-plastic region is calculated using the Tresca yield condition. Use of the Tresca yield condition greatly simplifies this derivation because the principal directions are known. This moment-curvature relationship is “exact” in the sense that only the standard assumptions of thin shell theory are made. The solutions of the elastic and plastic regions are matched at their intersection for an efficient numerical solution. The technique is used here to study the semi-infinite clamped cylindrical shell with an internal pressure loading.

Based on static Melan shakedown theorem, an elastic-plastic finite element method is presented to analyze the shakedown of saturated undrained foundation due to varied combined loadings, and the shakedown loadings under different patterns of loading combination are compared. At the same time, a comparison is given between the shakedown failure envelop under varied combined loading and the failure envelop of ultimate bearing capacity under static equilibrium, and it is found that the shakedown loading under varied combined loading is less than the ultimate bearing capacity under combined loading.
