Background: The working state of electronic accelerator pedal directly affects the safety of vehicles and drivers. Effective fault detection and judgment for the working state of the accelerator pedal can prevent accidents. Methods: Aiming at different working conditions of electronic accelerator pedal, this paper used PNN and BP diagnosis model to detect the state of electronic accelerator pedal according to the principle and characteristics of PNN and BP neural network. The fault diagnosis test experiment of electronic accelerator pedal was carried out to get the data acquisition. Results: After the patents for electronic accelerator pedals are queried and used, the first measured voltage, the upper limit of first voltage, the first voltage lower limit, the second measured voltage, the upper limit of second voltage and the second voltage lower limit are tested to build up the data samples. Then the PNN and BP fault diagnosis models of electronic accelerator pedal are established. Six fault samples are defined through the design of electronic accelerator pedal fault classifier and the fault diagnosis processes are executed to test. Conclusion: The fault diagnosis results were analyzed and the comparisons between the PNN and the BP research results show that BP neural network is an effective method for fault detection of electronic throttle pedal, which is obviously superior to PNN neural network based on the experiment data.

This paper presents an active accelerator pedal system based on an integrated sensor and actuator using shape memory alloy (SMA) for speed control and to create haptics in the accelerator pedal. A device named sensaptics is developed with a pair of bi-functional SMA wires instrumented in a synergistic configuration function as an active sensor for positioning the accelerator pedal (pedal position sensing) to control the vehicle speed through electronic throttle and as a variable impedance actuator to generate active force (haptic) feedback to the driver. The reaction force emanated from the pedal alerts the driver and takes appropriate control action by slowing down the vehicle, in harmony with the road’s condition. The design is developed as a proof-of-concept device and is tested and evaluated in a real-time common rail diesel system for rail pressure regulation and over speeding tests, and the responses and performances are found to be promising.

In order to improve the performance of a new type of full hybrid electric bus, this paper puts forward a set of coordinated control method to adjust the operation of the engine and two motors. In the engine start-stop logic control, comprehensive consideration of SOC, the speed of the bus and the accelerator pedal stroke are performed, while hysteresis control is introduced to improve the stability of the control; In the engine working point adjusting control, not only the engine speed command rate of change was optimized, but also the output torque rate was optimized to match the air injection and exhaust, etc. Further, the method based on dynamic constraints was used to optimize the working point adjustment process. At present, there are hundreds of busses operates in route. Results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the control method. The vehicle has good fuel economy, and the dynamic performance and driving comfort are also greatly improved.

Existing research on the manipulation comfort of the cab pedal generally focuses on the completion of the pedal movement when a vehicle is at rest, with certain data collected for analysis. This paper, by taking passenger vehicles in China as the study object and in view of the actual road conditions in China and the Chinese body size, attempts to solve the problem of muscle redundancy through the maximum/minimum optimization model of muscle activation. The road test was carried out on a typical pavement in a Chinese city. The parameters of pedal stroke, pedal force, and typical Electromyography signal (EMG) signal of drivers’ lower limbs during driving were obtained, from which muscle activation degree was calculated. The obtained experimental data were used as external driving one to simulate and analyze the pedal comfort under the layout of different human percentile and different pedal parameters in an aim to obtain the optimal value. The results indicate that the difference in pedal strokes, pedal preload, pedal resistance coefficients, seat heights, and H-point distances can have a noticeable effect on muscle activation. Taking a 95th-percentile accelerator pedal as an example, with the optimal values of each parameter selected (pedal preload: 8.2 N, pedal resistance coefficient: 2.55, seat height: 0.45 m and H-point distance: 0.86 m), as the pedal strokes increase, muscle activation shows a trend of increase after initial decrease. In the common stroke of a pedal after optimization, the degree of muscle activation is significantly lower than that before optimization, indicating a decrease in muscle fatigue.
