AbstractThis work explores the use of ultrasound (US) as a means of intensifying the impregnation of apple cubes with vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin). The effect of different US power densities (90 and 200 WL−1) and treatment times (5, 10, and 15 min) was evaluated, on vitamin load, vitamin stability, and physicochemical and microstructural properties of the fruit matrix. The US enhanced the impregnation producing high cyanocobalamin content products (0.12–0.19 mg vitamin/g db.). Vitamin losses in the sonication medium due to US application were not significant. Impregnated samples exhibited higher moisture and lower soluble solids with respect to the untreated fruit. Changes in chromatic coordinates were well correlated to vitamin uptake. Only at the highest treatment intensities (200 WL−1, 10, and 15 min) was a marked softening observed, which agreed with the microstructural changes observed in fruit tissues. Results permit US-assisted impregnation to be considered a promising technology in the preparation of vitamin B12 fortified apple cubes.

Abstract High levels of urea and creatinine in the blood are a sign of decreased kidney function. To remove these substances from the blood, hemodialysis which utilizes membranes could be used. In this study, a molecularly imprinted membrane (MIM) was synthesized for the selective transport of urea. The synthesis is initiated with the polymerization of eugenol into polyeugenol and then into polyeugenoxy acetate (PA). The PA is then contacted with urea and then used as the functional polymer in the synthesis of MIM with polysulfone as the membrane base, and polyethylene glycol as the cross-linking agent. The result was later analyzed with FTIR and SEM-EDX. The membrane is then used in the transport of urea, creatinine, and vitamin B12 and then compared with the non-imprinted membrane (NIM) performance. By using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, the results showed that the membrane with 10 h heating variation is able to transport more urea and is more selective than NIM; this proves that the urea template on the MIM enables it to recognize urea molecules better than creatinine and vitamin B12. The order of transport from the best results is urea > creatinine > vitamin B12.

As the first part of an investigation of the nutritive value of cod liver, two methods of preparation of cod liver residue were studied, as well as the effect of drum drying the residue, with and without the presence of sodium bisulphite, defatting the dried residue and extracting vitamin B12 from the dried residue. It was found that Vandenheuvel's method of preparation of residue produces very good results. The fresh residue could be dried without appreciable loss of vitamin B12 activity on a double drum dryer, operated with steam at 20 p.s.i.g. Sodium bisulphite afforded some protection during the drying. The most satisfactory results in defatting were obtained by extraction with dichloroethylene. Concentrates with vitamin B12 activity equivalent to 2–4 micrograms per milliliter were produced by extraction of dried, defatted residue with water and evaporation in vacuo.Five different types of residue were prepared for further studies.

Background: Dengue is an acute infectious febrile illness characterised by thrombocytopenia and platelet dysfunction leading to bleeding manifestations. Vitamin B12 is required for platelet production in the bone marrow. So, deficiency of vitamin B12 in dengue patients can have severe thrombocytopenia. Aims and Objective: Study was aimed to know the clinical profile of dengue fever patients and to correlate serum vitamin B12 level with severity of thrombocytopenia, platelet transfusion and duration of hospital stay. Materials and Methods: This observational study was done on dengue patients for period of 3 months January 2020 to March 2020. Confirmed cases of dengue fever with NS 1 Ag positive & Ig M antibody positive were included in the study. Patient with sepsis, underlying malignancy, autoimmune disorder, hematological disorder, drugs causing thrombocytopenia were excluded from the study. Appropriate statistical methods were applied. Results: Total 50 subjects were included. Majority of subjects were in the age group 31 to 40 years. 50% were males and females respectively. Most common clinical feature was fever and bleeding manifestations. Mean Vitamin B12 was significantly lower among those with severe thrombocytopenia and highest among those with no thrombocytopenia., there was significant difference in mean Platelet transfusion and duration of hospital stay with respect to severity of Platelet count. Conclusion: Dengue fever patients with vitamin B 12 deficiency had moderate to severe thrombocytopenia and more bleeding manifestations. Those patients required more platelet transfusion and increased duration of hospital stay.

Introduction: Serum folate (SF), vitamin B12 (B12), and iron deficiency (def) are common causes of nutritional anemias (NA). These deficiencies are usually multifactorial, with nutritional and non-nutritional causes playing a role. SF, B12, and iron levels are usually ordered in the setting of anemia, and malnutrition with or without neurologic symptoms. Clinical evidence suggests that these def have a strong dietary component and socioeconomic status (SES). The relationship of NA and area-based SES in the US has not been studied. We aimed to determine the relationship of SES with the prevalence of NA. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of adult patients with SF, B12 and iron levels at Mayo Clinic Arizona and Florida between 2010 and 2018. Race was classified using the NIH criteria. Normal laboratory values were determined according to our lab reference and the US NHANES III. SF levels (mcg/Lt) were defined as deficient <4, normal ≥4.0, and excess ≥20. B12 levels (ng/L) as deficient <150, borderline 150-400, normal >400-900, and excess ≥900. Iron def was determined by ferritin levels (mcg/L) as low <24, normal 24-336, elevated >336 for men, low <11, normal 11-307, elevated >307 for women. Area-Level SES indicators: Median Household income (MHI), unemployment rate (UR), median gross rent month (MGRM), % uninsured, median house value (MHV), % high school; were geocoded by zip code using the 2014 American Community Survey. Demographics and clinical variables were compared between groups by chi-square test for frequency data or Kruskal Wallis rank-sum test for continuous variables. Results: 202,046 samples from 128,084 patients were analyzed. In the sample-level analysis, there were statistically significant associations between SES and SF def; all SES indicators except UR for B12 def; and no differences for iron def, except % uninsured (Table 1). There was no statistically significant interaction between race and SES for SF def and iron def. Race was a statistically significant modifier between B12 def and MHI (p<0.001), % uninsured (p=0.002), and MHV (p=0.007). Asian and Other race had an increase in odds of B12 def with increasing MHI (Asian OR=1.11 , Other OR=1.18); white race had a decrease in odds of B12 def with increasing MHI (OR=0.95 for a $10,000 increase in MHI). Conclusions: We show significant relationships between SES and NA in the US. Differences were observed between SF def and all the SES indicators without race interactions. There were significant interactions between B12 def, race and SES for pts of White, Asian and Other race. There were no differences between SES and race for iron def. These relationships confirm that NA are related to area-level SES and other social determinants of health. Research regarding the causes of these disparities on a population level are needed. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

In the synthesis of cobyric acid following an arduous 60-step synthesis of the tetrapyrrole corrigenolide, Woodward demonstrated that ring cyclization yielded unexpectedly the corrin cyclic ether (Fig. 2). Its structure was chosen as the chemistry logo for the 1970 IUPAC meeting. It was a reminder that chemistry can be capricious and beautiful. This article is a tribute to the 50-year career in porphyrins of Professor Kevin M. Smith and describes his early contributions with colleagues in the synthetic quest of a related porphyrin molecule, vitamin B12 (Fig. 1a).
