A method is given for calculating the vertical transport velocity in the sea, from the oceanographic observations at two close stations and a knowledge of the depth at which there is no net horizontal motion. This method is applied to Line "P" in the subarctic Pacific Ocean where the halocline structure exists, the bottom of the halocline being taken as the depth of no net motion.Such factors as the earth's rotation, the meridional transport, and the wind pattern, control the vertical transport velocity in a region. The wind defines the general meridional and vertical circulation pattern of the ocean.
