Restoration-era discourse on the montagnes russes—early roller coasters—reveals how leisure activity could become a lightning rod for perspectives on public space, tensions among social groups, and expressions of patriotism. Eager to profit from the montagnes russes craze, boulevard theaters hosted a number of plays on the subject. Through the buffoonish character M. Calicot, one such comedy—entitled The Battle of the Mountains— caricatured young clothing-trade salesclerks who frequented roller-coaster parks. The play provoked the ire of some of these men, who “waged war” on the Variety Theater, where the play was performed. The conflict in turn sparked satires in print, visual, and other media. These cultural productions both reflected the short-lived mania for roller coasters and shaped attitudes in their own right, all while employing laughter to deal with postwar trauma.

The notion of comfort with respect to rides, such as roller coasters, is typically addressed from the perspective of a physical ride, where the convenience of transportation is redefined to minimize risk and maximize thrill. As a popular form of entertainment, roller coasters sit at the nexus of rides and games, providing a suitable environment to measure both mental and physical experiences of rider comfort. In this paper, the way risk and comfort affect such experiences is investigated, and the connection between play comfort and ride comfort is explored. A roller coaster ride simulation is adopted as the target environment for this research, which combines the feeling of being thrill and comfort simultaneously. At the same time, this paper also expands research on roller coaster rides while bridging the rides and games via the analogy of the law of physics, a concept currently known as motion in mind. This study’s contribution involves a roller coaster ride model, which provides an extended understanding of the relationship between physical performance and the mental experience relative to the concept of motion in mind while establishing critical criteria for a comfortable experience of both the ride and play.

To assess the roller coaster multi-body system security, it is need to extract the running process of kinematics, dynamics, load spectrum and other features, as basis dates of the roller coaster structural design. Based on Solidworks/motion software and in the 3D model, the calculation formula of the carrying car velocity and acceleration is derived, and the five risk points of the roller coaster track section are found by simulation in the running, and the simulation results of roller coaster axle mass center velocity are compared with theoretical calculation results, which error is less than 4.1%, indicating that the calculation and simulation have a good fit and providing the evidence for the roller coaster structure design analysis.

Based on the requirements of special equipment safety and the current status of recreation facilities test system, a fault diagnosis system for roller coaster was designed. The signal acquisition device was designed, taking digital signal processor as the main control chip. High-frequency vibration acceleration signal and low-frequency motion acceleration signal were acquired. And the data were transmitted to upper computer. By using LabVIEW, the software of upper computer was developed. FFT analysis and wavelet analysis were applied to process the data. BP neural network was applied to fault diagnosis. The test result shows that the system is quick, accurate and reliable.
