Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive model of a circular-diaphragm piezoresistive microphone. The structural characteristics of the diaphragm are developed as a function of both in-plane stress and transverse loading. The mechanical scaling for piezoresistor location and maximum sensitivity is given. The dynamics of the microphone are explored by combining the fundamental structural model with a lumped-element energy model. A description of the elements is given along with the frequency limitations of the lumped approximation for each element. This model is then used to provide insight into the key aspects of the dynamic response.
