Image segmentation plays an important role in the field of image processing, helping to understand images and recognize objects. However, most existing methods are often unable to effectively explore the spatial information in 3D image segmentation, and they neglect the information from the contours and boundaries of the observed objects. In addition, shape boundaries can help to locate the positions of the observed objects, but most of the existing loss functions neglect the information from the boundaries. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper presents a new cascaded 2.5D fully convolutional networks (FCNs) learning framework to segment 3D medical images. A new boundary loss that incorporates distance, area, and boundary information is also proposed for the cascaded FCNs to learning more boundary and contour features from the 3D medical images. Moreover, an effective post-processing method is developed to further improve the segmentation accuracy. We verified the proposed method on LITS and 3DIRCADb datasets that include the liver and tumors. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than existing methods with a Dice Per Case score of 74.5% for tumor segmentation, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Health care institution demands exchange of medical images of number of patients to sought opinions from different experts. In order to reduce storage and for secure transmission of the medical images, Crypto-Watermarking techniques are adopted. The system is considered to be combinations of encryption technique with watermarking or steganography means adopted for safe transfer of medical images along with embedding of optional medical information. The Digital Watermarking is the process of embedding data to multimedia content. This can be done in spatial as well as frequency domain of the cover image to be transmitted. The robustness against attacks is ensured while embedding the encrypted data into transform domain, the encrypted data can be any secret key for the content recovery or patient record or the image itself. This chapter presents basic aspects of crypto-watermarking technique, as an application. It gives a detailed assessment on different approaches of crypto-watermarking for secure transmission of medical images and elaborates a case study on it.

The consultation of medical images, 2D or 3D, has a crucial role for planned or ongoing surgical operations. During an intervention, this consultation induces a sterility loss for the surgeon due to the fact that the classical interaction devices are non-sterile. A solution to this problem would be to replace conventional devices by touchless interaction technologies, thereby enabling sterile interventions. In this paper, we present the conceptual development of an intuitive “gesture vocabulary” allowing the implementation of an effective touchless interactive system that is well adapted to the specificities of the surgical context. Our methodology and its implementation as well as our results are detailed. The suggested methodology and its implementation were both shown to be a valid approach to integrating this mean of interaction in the operating room.
