Lapping is a finishing process used especially for removing the material, achieving finer surfaces, correcting minor imperfections and maintaining close tolerances. This process may takes place due to the relative motion between the work material, slurry and lapping plate. This study is done by conducting a series of experiments based on taguchi design of experiments and calculating material removal rate and surface roughness. This study explains about effect of the parameters on material removal rate and surface finish. The final step of this process is to find out the optimum combination of process parameters to determine the material removal rate and the surface finish.

In research work variation of cutting performance with pulse on time, pulse off time, wire type, and peak current were experimentally investigated in wire electric discharge machining (WEDM) process. Soft brass wire and zinc coated diffused wire with 0.25 mm diameter and Die tool steel H-13 with 155 mm× 70 mm×14 mm dimensions were used as tool and work materials in the experiments. Surface roughness and material removal rate (MRR) were considered as performance output in this study. Taguchi method was used for designing the experiments and optimal combination of WEDM parameters for proper machining of Die tool steel (H-13) to achieve better surface finish and material removal rate. In addition the most significant cutting parameter is determined by using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Abstract Chemical-mechanical planarization or polishing (CMP) is an emerging process used in surface planarization and polishing for semiconducter wafer with multilevel interconnections. This paper investigates the effects of polishing pressure and velocity on the material removal rate (RR) and the non-uniformity (NU) in the CMP process. Wear models for CMP process from mechanical aspect, including abrasive-based model and flow-based model, are first discussed. Experiments using different polishing pressures, velocities, and back pressures are then designed and conducted based on the Taguchi method. Experimental results showed that RR and NU are consistent with theoretical models in a certain range. Both RR and NU increase as polishing speed increases. As RR and NU also increase with the polishing pressure at low pressure, their values become saturated and then decrease when the pressure exceeds certain value. It further verified that NU can be improved using proper back pressure as predicted by the flow-based wear model.

In this paper, parameter optimization of the electrical discharge machining process to Ti–6Al–4V alloy considering the multiple responses using the Taguchi method and grey relational analysis is reported. The multi-response optimization of the process parameters are material removal rate (MRR) and electrode wear rate (EWR). The machining parameters including discharge current, voltage, pulse on time and duty factor. Experiment based on the orthogonal array, The optimized process parameters simultaneously leading to a lower electrode wear ratio and higher material removal rate are then verified through a confirmation experiment. The experimental result for the optimal setting shows that there is considerable improvement in the process. The validation experiments show an improved electrode wear ratio of 2.8%, material removal rate of 45.8% when the Taguchi method and grey relational analysis are used.

The experimental investigation of process characteristics while performing micro-milling on hybrid aluminium metal matrix composite is discussed in this article. High Speed Steel micro end mill cutters are used for machining of micro-slots on Al6063 metal matrix composite reinforced with zirconia and silicon carbide. The tools are also treated cryogenically at -196°C using liquid nitrogen with a holding time of 24 hours. For this investigation, machining parameters like feed rate, cutting speed and depth of cut are considered as the process parameters. The effect of the process parameters on the material removal rate and surface roughness for hybrid metal matrix composite are analyzed. In addition, tools wear for untreated and cryo-treated single tempered tools are also investigated. The output responses i.e., material removal rate and surface roughness of cryo-treated tools exhibit better results than untreated tool due to increase in strength, hardness and wear resistance.

In this study, by performing the experimental research, the surface roughness, cutting force and vibration were modeled. The Genetic Algorithms (GAs) were applied to determine the optimal values of external cylindrical grinding conditions to achieve the minimum value of surface roughness and the maximum value of the material removal rate. The optimum values of surface roughness and material removal rate are 0.490 [Formula: see text]m and 3.974 mm2/s, respectively, that were obtained at a feed rate of 0.3 m/min, at a workpiece speed of 164.82 rpm, at a cutting depth of 0.015 mm, and a workpiece Rockwell hardness of 56.32 HRC. The optimal values were successfully verified by experimental results with very promising results.
