In the present work, the hot deformation behavior of TB18 titanium alloy was investigated by isothermal hot compression tests with temperatures from 650 to 880°C and strain rates from 0.001 to 10 s−1. The flow curves after friction and temperature correction show that the peak stress decreased with the temperature increase and the strain rate decrease. Three typical characteristics of flow behavior indicate the dynamic softening behavior during hot deformation. At a strain rate of 0.001∼0.01 s−1, the flow stress continues to decrease as the strain rate increases after the flow stress reaches the peak stress; the flow softening mechanism is dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization at a lower temperature and dynamic recrystallization at a higher temperature. The discontinuous yielding phenomenon could be seen at a strain rate of 1 s−1, dynamic recrystallization took place in the β single-phase zone, and flow localization bands were observed in the α + β two-phase zone. At a higher strain rate of 10 s−1, the flow instabilities were referred to as the occurrence of flow localization by adiabatic heat. Constitutive equation considering the compensation of strain was also established, and the results show high accuracy to predict the flow stress with the correlation coefficient of 99.2% and the AARE of 6.1%, respectively.

Isothermal compression tests of TC18 titanium alloy at the deformation temperatures ranging from 25?C to 800?C and strain rate ranging from 10-4 to 10-2 s-1 were conducted by using a WDW-300 electronic universal testing machine. The hot deformation behavior of TC18 was characterized based on an analysis of the true stress-true strain curves of TC18 titanium alloy. The curves show that the flow stress increases with increasing the strain rate and decreases with increasing the temperature, and the strain rate play an important role in the flow stress when increasing the temperatures. By taking the effect of strain into account, an improved constitutive relationship was proposed based on the Arrhenius equation. By comparison with the experimental results, the model prediction agreed well with the experimental data, which demonstrated the established constitutive relationship was reliable and can be used to predict the hot deformation behavior of TC18 titanium alloy.

The hot deformation behavior of the Zn-8Cu-0.3Ti alloy was researched by compression test on Gleeble-3500 thermo-simulation machine. The results indicated that the flow stress increased rapidly with the increase of the strain at the initial stage, however, the flow stress decreased and become steady when the strain exceed a certain value. The steady stress and peak stress increased with the decrease of the deformation temperature and the increase of the strain rate. The variation regulation of the deformation activation energy and stress exponent with the strain was established through the regression method. The hot deformation constitutive relationship was also established. Comparing with the experimental results, it was proved that the model reflected the real deformation feature of Zn-8Cu-0.3Ti zinc alloy.

To elucidate the hot deformation characteristics of TiAl alloys, flow stress prediction, microstructural evolution and deformation mechanisms were investigated in Ti-44Al-5Nb-1Mo-2V-0.2B alloy by isothermal compression tests. A constitutive relationship using the Arrhenius model involving strain compensation and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) model were developed. A comparison of two models suggested that the BP-ANN model had excellent capabilities and was more accurate in predicting flow stress. Based on the microstructural analysis, bending and elongation of colonies, γ and B2 grains were the main microstructural constituents at low temperature and high strain rate. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of γ and dynamic recovery (DRY) of β/B2 were the main deformation mechanisms. With the increase of temperature and decrease of strain rate, phase transformation played an important role. The flake-like γ precipitates in B2 grains, and a coarsening of γ lamellae via α lath dissolution during compression were observed. Additionally, the flow softening process commenced with dislocation pile-up and formation of sub-grain boundaries, followed by grain refinement, twins and nano-lamellar nucleation. Continuous DRX and phase transformation promoted the formability of Ti-44Al-5Nb-1Mo-2V-0.2B alloy.

The hot deformation behaviors of a new Ti-6Al-2Nb-2Zr-0.4B titanium alloy in the strain rate range 0.01–10.0 s−1 and temperature range 850–1060 °C were evaluated using hot compressing testing on a Gleeble-3800 simulator at 60% of deformation degree. The flow stress characteristics of the alloy were analyzed according to the true stress–strain curve. The constitutive equation was established to describe the change of deformation temperature and flow stress with strain rate. The thermal deformation activation energy Q was equal to 551.7 kJ/mol. The constitutive equation was ε ˙=e54.41[sinh (0.01σ)]2.35exp(−551.7/RT). On the basis of the dynamic material model and the instability criterion, the processing maps were established at the strain of 0.5. The experimental results revealed that in the (α + β) region deformation, the power dissipation rate reached 53% in the range of 0.01–0.05 s−1 and temperature range of 920–980 °C, and the deformation mechanism was dynamic recovery. In the β region deformation, the power dissipation rate reached 48% in the range of 0.01–0.1 s−1 and temperature range of 1010–1040 °C, and the deformation mechanism involved dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization.

AbstractThe hot deformation characteristics of nickel-based alloy Nimonic 80A were investigated by isothermal compression tests conducted in the temperature range of 1,000–1,200°C and the strain rate range of 0.01—5 s–1on a Gleeble-1500 thermomechanical simulator. In order to establish the constitutive models for dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior and flow stress of Nimonic 80A, the material constantsα,nand DRX activation energyQin the constitutive models were calculated by the regression analysis of the experimental data. The dependences of initial stress, saturation stress, steady-state stress, dynamic recovery (DRV) parameter, peak strain, critical strain and DRX grain size on deformation parameters were obtained. Then, the Avrami equation including the critical strain for DRX and the peak strain as a function of strain was established to describe the DRX volume fraction. Finally, the constitutive model for flow stress of Nimonic 80A was developed in DRV region and DRX region, respectively. The flow stress values predicted by the constitutive model are in good agreement with the experimental ones, which indicates that the constitutive model can give an accurate estimate for the flow stress of Nimonic 80A under the deformation conditions.

The effect of strain rate and deformation temperature on flow stress of TC18 titanium alloy was studied through heat simulating tests in 760~960 with temperature interval and the strain rate interval in 0.01~10s-1. Relationship model of flow stress versus strain was established and hot deformation mechanics of TC18 titanium alloy was analyzed. The results show that the flow stress reduces obviously as the deformation temperature increases or the strain rate decreases. Dynamic recovery occurs at high strain rate above phase transformation point, while dynamic recrystallization occurs at low strain rate as well as at the temperature below phase transformation point.

The isothermal hot compression behavior of new Ti–Fe–B (named as TF400) alloy was investigated in the temperature range of 750–950 °C and strain rate range from 0.01 to 10 s−1 with the maximum height reduction of 60% by using a Gleeble 3800 thermal simulator. By considering the effect of strain via variable material parameters, a modified constitutive model was proposed to accurately predict the flow stress. The predicted results demonstrate that the flow stress decreases with the increase of temperature while it increases as the strain rate increases, in good agreement with the present experimental results. A mechanistic understanding of plastic deformation behavior in the TF400 alloys was developed by inspecting the microstructural characteristics prior to and after deformations. Dynamic recrystallization and dynamic transformation were found to be the dominant restoration mechanism during the hot deformation process.
