Docetaxel (form A), a stoichiometric hydrate containing three water molecules per molecule of drug substance (Taxotere®), is thermodynamically stable under ambient conditions of pressure, temperature and relative humidity. In order to gain a better understanding of docetaxel system at the atomic scale a structural study was performed. Due to strong anisotropy of crystals (thin plates), the crystal structure of docetaxel (29 degrees of freedom) was solved and refined using high resolution XRPD data applying an ab initio direct space method. In parallel, an in-depth crystal growth study was carried out until single crystals suitable for XRSCD structural resolution were obtained: surprisingly, a new polymorph of docetaxel, called form B, was isolated.

The microwave sintering of glass-ceramics, non-thermal microwave effect, and crystal growth mechanism remain important challenges in materials science. In this study, we focus on developing approaches to affect crystal growth in the glass network of glass-ceramics by microwave heating, rather than performing a single study on the crystal structure and type. Raman spectroscopy is used to detect the structure of the glass network. We demonstrated that the non-thermal microwave effect promoted the diffusion of metal ions, which promoted the aggregation and precipitation of metal ions in the glass network to form crystals. The samples produced by microwave heating contain more non-bridging oxygen bonds than conventional sintered samples; therefore, the non-thermal microwave effect has a depolymerization effect on the glass network of the sample. Under the influence of microwave field, many metal ions precipitate, which precipitates many crystal nuclei. In addition, many active metal ions are captured during the crystal nucleus growth, which shortens the sintering process of glass-ceramics.

p-type SiC crystals doped with aluminum and nitrogen were grown by the sublimation method. We found that Al and N co-doping is effective for stabilized growth of p-type 4H-SiC polytype. We studied the relationship of polytype of grown crystals and the condition of Al and N feeding during the crystal growth. p-type 4H-SiC withp~1 x 1018cm-3are stably-obtained with this method.
