Theorists of contentious politics have been divided over the influence on agency behaviour of ideational or cultural factors on the one hand, and rational strategic calculations of opportunities on the other. Based on an Israeli nonparliamentary opposition movement to the peace process, this study presents an integrative approach in which ideational variables are elevated to the level of independent motivating forces in which the objectives of the movement are embedded. Argumentation at the strategic level provides the movement with opportunities for increasing its support basis beyond the natural constituency with which it shares ideology and, ultimately, for mobilizing protest. The case illustrates how a political context that limits activity actually mobilizes contention, while a context of more open opportunity can demobilize protest activity.

Abstract Using the U.S.-Mexican border as the place of enunciation, Cantú’s autoethnobiographical novel insists on the materiality of the border, especially for those living on its southern side, while simultaneously deconstructing it as artificial - a line splitting families and assigning nationalities on an arbitrary basis. Being a collage of photographs from the time the writer was growing up in southern Texas and the cuentos inspired by these visuals, Cantú’s Canícula documents how border crossings and re-crossings become symptomatic of living in a liminal space and how they destabilize the concept of nationality as bi-national families must learn to live with ambiguity. On the one hand, there is the undeniable materiality of the border, with its pain, fear, deportations, and other discriminatory practices; on the other, there is a growing border community of resistance cultivating the memory that they are not immigrants, that they lived in Texas before the Guadalupe-Hidalgo treaty. The paper examines the community’s strategies of survival in the contested cultural and social space and advances the thesis that, giving her community an awareness of its homogeneity and reclaiming its place within the larger socio-political context, Cantú becomes an agent of empowerment and change. She helps decolonize knowledge and being.

As information communication and technologies (ICT-) enabled services such as e-government initiatives diffuse globally, it is becoming clear that some nations are not faring as well as others. Yet, the notion of e-government stands to benefit the sorts of countries that are lagging behind the most. Here, we examine the relationships between economic climates and national cultural factors, on the one hand, and e-government readiness, on the other. Our results showed significant relationships between nations’ economic climates, some cultural dimensions, and e-government readiness. We discussed our findings in the context of three relevant socio-economic theories. We also highlighted the study’s implications for researchers, policy-makers, and governments.

Essence, structure and mission of modern specialist’s professional culture are analyzed in the article. The author reveals the basic theoretical and methodological background of investigating labour subject’s professional culture as an integrative phenomenon. In this context actual determinants, which characterize direction, character, development psychological specificity and display of labour subject’s professional culture, are specified and revealed. Herewith, the multi-faceted mission of conditions and factors is pointed and characterized. On the one hand, they contribute to development of labour subject’s professional culture, but, on the other hand, some of the pointed determinants block this process. The particular place in the article is occupied by the realized integrative approach which allows characterizing labour subject’s professional culture, its development and functioning as an integrative phenomenon in a systematic way. For increasing efficiency of this process the psychological model of achieving this goal in the concrete labour system is made and tested.

Moscow seems indeed to be a centre of world tourism. On the one hand, its tourism attractiveness for Russians and foreigners, as well as the wide opportunities it offers to its own inhabitants, stimulates trips for tourism and recreational purposes. On the other hand, it is determined by a number of historical, geographical, demographic, geopolitical, economic and socio-cultural factors.

In this the last of four articles centering on the topic “Literacy–And Then?” the author examines ways of evaluating mass media development. He finds a high correlation between both urbanization and per capita GNP on the one hand, and literacy on the other. Even better results would be obtained by using societies rather than countries as units of comparison. The author concludes by listing various kinds of supporting data that can be used in evaluating and planning: Both material factors and cultural factors.

This chapter focuses on the Czech Constitutional Court (CCC). It shows, on the one hand, how the CCC has so far skilfully navigated through political ups and downs and has risen to prominence in Czech politics. On the other hand, this chapter also suggests that the CCC, despite its current wide powers, is a rather fragile institution. It argues that the creation of the CCC must be understood in the broader historical and political context. To that end, the chapter sketches the institutional design of the CCC and discusses the CCC’s powers. Subsequently, the chapter analyses the internal judicial practices of the CCC and the key procedural rules, then provides the taxonomy of the CCC’s rulings as well as their style, effects, and publication. Finally, it identifies and discusses political determinants of the CCC’s functioning and focuses on the interaction of the CCC with other domestic as well as supranational actors.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between personality factors (i.e. neuroticism, agreeableness, extroversion, conscientiousness and openness), cultural factors (individualism and collectivism) and store stimuli (window display and sales promotion) on impulsive buying behavior. Design/methodology/approach The sample size for the study was 350 with a response rate of 96 percent. The questionnaire was adapted from the established scale and measures. SmartPLS was used for statistical analysis. After reliability and validity analysis, the structural model was tested, and it fitted very well. Findings Of the nine hypotheses, five were accepted, and the other four were rejected. The results suggest that neuroticism, openness, individualism, collectivism and sales promotion significantly affect impulsive buying behavior. Marketers can use these results in developing appropriate marketing strategies. Research limitations/implications Implications for managers were drawn from the results. In this study, only two cultural factors were considered. Future studies could use all the cultural factors in their model. Additionally, the developed model can be extended for comparative studies. Originality/value Impulsive buying behavior, on the one hand, is problematic for consumers, but, on the other hand, is used as a tool by retailers for increasing sales. Comparatively, this study examined the effects of personality factors, cultural factors and store stimuli on impulsive buying behavior. These three factors have rarely been used together in one study.

Abstract Nusantara is the land with various old tales. There is remaining some historical facts that is still urgent to discuss. One of past theme that is interesting is the relation of kingdoms and lands. Aceh Darussalam is one of the greatest kingdom in Sumatra and the strait of Malaka. Their existence had regarded as the guard, but for the other groups see it as threat. In some cases, that outlook can be changing, depending on the regional political context. The Kingdom of Johor becomes a one of political entity that is actively associated with Aceh. They need a strong colleague, in order to continue their development into estabilished kingdom. Their dark past, that is the fall of Malaka because Portuguese attack in 1511, is used for building a billateral cooperation with Aceh. Instead, the two kingdoms involved family relations. As we khow, marriage is the one of ancient diplomatic model in Middle Ages. During the wheel of time, the diplomatic boundery between Aceh and Johor is not always on the line. At the one day, Johor had known that Aceh had another goal behind his intentions. Aceh had planned that Johor is part of Aceh’s subordinate area. Therefore, Johor had decided Portuguese as his friend. This decision contraries to the vision of Aceh. Aceh had thougt that Portuguese is his rival. Aceh had showed his anger with several attacks to Johor. This Paper will explain the model of ancient diplomacies, in case of the relation of Aceh and Johor. Some kind of that such as the diplomacy in politic and intellectual sphere. DOI: 10.15408/al-turas.v23i1.4800

Max Weber’s much-commented speech of January 1919 on ‘ Politik als Beruf’ is analysed in this article in a double context – on the one hand, in the concrete political context of the months of January and February 1919; on the other hand, in connection with his major political treatises, especially Parliament and Government in Germany under a New Political Order. This leads to a reassessment of Weber’s concept of the professional politician, as well as to the insight that the frequent translation of the title of his lecture to ‘Politics as a Vocation’ does not touch the core of Weber’s view of politics in parliamentary democracies.

Historical and social origin(s) of apocalyipticismHow and where did apocalyptic literature originate? What is the relation between apocalyptic literature on the one hand, and prophesy and wisdom literature on the other? Should apocalyptic literature be regarded as a deviation from prophetic literature, or is it a linear development thereof? Wherein lies the difference between prophetic and apocalyptic eschatology? In this artcle a literary study is done to find answers to these questions and it is concluded that apocalypticism does not have a single dominant origin, but that its origins lie in a complexity of factors. The researcher can find a description of these factors only in each unique apocalyptic work. Many historical and cultural factors played a role in the origin of apocalyptic works. A single social background cannot be posited for apocalyptic literature either. The worldview expressed by apocalyptic works does not necessarily represent that of marginalized groups as apocalypticism is rather a way of thinking which permeated the entire Jewish community.
