A new species of Archinome (Polychaeta: Archinomidae) from hydrothermal vents on the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge 37°S

Archinome storchi sp. nov. is described as the second species of the family Archinomidae. The specimens were collected from a hydrothermal vent site in 2212 m depth on the Pacific–Antarctic Ridge at 37° S. It differs from Archinome rosacea mainly in the position of the anus, the first appearance of branchiae and the length of the nuchal cirrus. Additional specimens of A. rosacea collected from hydrothermal vent locations in the North Fiji Basin and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge were used for morphological comparison. A synoptic table of characters is given for A. rosacea and A. storchi sp. nov. together with a list of records for Archinomidae compiled from the literature.

The genus Smacigastes Ivanenko & Defaye, 2004 (Harpacticoida, Copepoda) is the most primitive genus in the family Tegastidae Sars, 1904, occurring in deep-sea chemosynthetic environments, such as hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale falls and wood falls. Our exploration of the Onnuri Vent Field, the sixth active hydrothermal vent system in the Central Indian Ridge, resulted in the discovery of a new species in the genus Smacigastes. A detailed morphological analysis of S. pumilasp. nov. reveals that it most resembles S. barti Gollner, Ivanenko & Martínez Arbizu, 2008, described from a hydrothermal vent in the East Pacific Ridge; the new species can be distinguished from the existing species by the 8-segmented female antennule, the absence of an abexopodal seta on the antennary basis, the mandibular exopod represented by a single seta and the exopod of the first leg with five setae. This is the first record of Smacigastes in the Indian Ocean. A dichotomous key to species of the genus Smacigastes worldwide is provided.

A new species of eolepadid stalked barnacle, Vulcanolepas fijiensis sp. nov., was collected from a hydrothermal vent in the North Fiji Basin, Southwestern Pacific Ocean, at a depth of 1988 m. Based on morphological characteristics, this new species was distinguished from its relatives, V. osheai Buckeridge, 2000, V. parensis Southward, 2005, V. scotiaensis Buckeridge, Linse & Jackson, 2013, and V. buckeridgei Chan & Chang, 2018. Based on morphological characteristics, Vulcanolepas species are divided mainly into two groups by the size of the first mandibular tooth; the first group has a large mandibular first tooth (V. parensis, V. scotiaensis, and V. fijiensis sp. nov., the second a small mandibular first tooth (V. osheai and V. buckeridgei). The new species can be easily distinguished from V. parensis and V. scotiaensis by the length ratio of antenniform segments to robust segments of the rami of cirrus I. Vulcanolepas fijiensis sp. nov. also differs from V. parensis by the length ratio of the penis and cirrus VI (1/10 vs 1/4), and the extension the carinal apex to the tergum (extended vs not extended). Additionally, the sequence divergence of the cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene between V. fijiensis sp. nov. and the other neolepadid species (except V. parensis from its original locations) ranged from 4.2% to 14.0%. In a neighbor-joining tree, V. fijiensis sp. nov. formed an independent branch. These results infer that V. fijiensis sp. nov. is a new species, distinct from the other known neolepadids.

Five species of three genera of Dirivultidae Humes and Dojiri, 1980 were found at deep-sea hydrothermal vent fields on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, at the Logachev-1 field at 14ºN and at two new sites (Turtle Pits and Red Lion) explored at 5ºS. The copepods were collected with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV Quest 4000) and Video Controlled Grab, operated from the R/V Meteor during two cruises (M60/3 and M64/1) conducted in 2004 and 2005 at depths 2992–3048 m. The male of Stygiopontius lomonosovi n. sp. from the Logachev field shares a medioventrally prolonged syncoxa of the maxilliped with S. mirus Humes, 1996 and S. latulus Humes, 1996 from the Snake Pit at 23ºN of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but differs from them in having two, instead of three, outer spines on the distal exopodal segment of leg 4. Aphotopontius atlanteus Humes, 1996 previously known from the Lucky Strike and the Menez Gwen sites at 37°N and Rimipontius mediospinifer Humes, 1996 known from three sites (Logachev, Snake Pit, and Broken Spur at 29°N) are recorded from the Logachev field. Stygiopontius pectinatus Humes, 1987 previously recorded from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vent fields TAG (26°N), Snake Pit, Broken Spur (29°N), and from the Mariana Back-Arc Basin of the Pacific Ocean and Stygiopontius cladarus Humes, 1996 previously known only from Snake Pit and Broken Spur, were found associated with alvinocaridid shrimps (Rimicaris sp.) from the hydrothermal vent field at 5ºS. The discovery of dirivultids at 5ºS represents the first record of copepods from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent southward of the Logachev field in the Atlantic Ocean.

A new species of Trichogypsiidae is described and compared to its congeners. Trichogypsia alaskensis n. sp. represents the fifth species of the family and with this record all three genera of the family are now represented in the North Pacific Ocean. Calcarea are rare in the Gulf of Alaska but with this new record the number of confirmed species rises from two to three. The new species has larger diactines of a broader size range and with a different pattern of spination than all congeners.

To enhance our understanding of the reproductive biology of deep-sea hydrothermal vent mytilids, the histology of the male gonad and the ultrastructure of its gametes were studied in Bathymodiolus thermophilus, B. puteoserpentis, and B. elongatus. Specimens of B. thermophilus were collected at the 13°N site on the East Pacific ridge, while B. puteoserpentis were sampled from the Snake Pit site of the mid-Atlantic ridge and B. elongatus were obtained from the North Fiji Basin. Gonad histology conformed to the typical bivalve profile; the differences in the proportions of acinal and interacinal tissue, as well as differences in acinal fullness in B. puteoserpentis, indicate that gametogenesis is discontinuous in these deep-sea mytilids. Evidence of protandric hermaphroditism was observed in B. elongatus, which exhibited acini containing both maturing and residual male gametes and immature oocytes. The ultrastructural characteristics of the male gametes conform to those described for littoral bivalve species, and the spermatozoon is of the primitive type. No species-specific differences in spermatozoon ultrastructure were discerned. No evidence of bacterial inclusions was found in either the gametes or the associated gonad cells in any of the species examined. The male gametes are thus probably not vectors for the endosymbiotic bacteria that characterize the nutritional biology of the adults in this genus.

Gaidropsarus mauli, new species, is described from the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal vent site (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) and from the Bay of Biscay. It is distinguished from congeners by a combination of characters such as the number of vertebrae, the size of the first dorsal-fin ray, the profile of the head and the shape of the snout, in dorsal view, the size and the position of the eyes, the length of the pelvic fins, the shape of the pectoral fins, and the length of the lateral line. A comparison with the other 13 valid species of the genus is presented.

A new species, Pholis clemensi, referred to the family Pholidae, is named and described from 12 specimens taken in southern British Columbia waters and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Pholis clemensi is compared with other members of the genus, and a key is given to the North American species.

Abstract Dirivultid copepods (Siphonostomatoida), one of the most successful meiobenthic organisms found at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, have been the focus of most previous ecological studies among meiofauna in these habitats. The ecology of Harpacticoida, a major benthic copepod group in typical deep-sea floor, however, is not well understood in terms of variations in community structure and controlling factors at venting sites. The spatial heterogeneities in benthic harpacticoid composition and their association with environmental parameters were investigated at hydrothermal vent chimney structures in the calderas of three neighbouring sea knolls (Bayonnaise Knoll, Myojin Knoll and Myojin-sho Caldera) in the western North Pacific. While a previous study had reported the distribution of dirivultids was strongly associated with spatial differences in stable carbon isotopic signatures (δ13C) of organic matter in the detritus on active chimneys in the field, multivariate analyses detected no significant corelation between the parameter and harpacticoid composition in this study. Instead, high associations of the harpacticoid composition with differences in water depth and total organic carbon (TOC) concentration were detected. Ectinosomatidae dominated at vent sites with lower TOC values in the shallowest Bayonnaise Knoll, while they were less prevalent at deeper vent fields in the other knolls, where Miraciidae was the most abundant family. This study indicated the availability of vent chemoautotrophic carbon is not a primary factor controlling the composition of harpacticoids even in the habitats on the hydrothermal vents, but instead by the food amount, regardless of its resources (including marine snow from the sea surface), in the study area.

A new species of Alepocephalidae, Leptoderma macrophthalmum n.sp., is described from one specimen caught in 2004 at about 2100 m depth at the Mid Atlantic Ridge, north of the Azores. Morphological and molecular evidence indicate a relationship closest to the Pacific species Leptoderma lubricum.

A new species of the genus Munida Leach, 1820, is described and illustrated based on a single specimen from the deep-sea hydrothermal vent on the Eastern Pacific Rise. Munida alba sp. nov. closely resembles M. ampliantennulata Komai, 2011, M. watatsumin Komai, 2014. and M. magniantennulata, but differences in the morphologies of the third maxilliped, pollex of the cheliped and the third segment of the antennal peduncle readily distinguish the new species from the three relatives. The new species is the fourth of the genus occurring at the hydrothermal vent areas.
