Equipped with a 15° F2 objective prism the (45/77/150)cm Schmidt telescope of the Copenhagen university Observatory, Brorfelde yields spectra of 102 A/mm at Hα to a limit of approximately mpg =9.5.

The existing spectral searches for quasars have increased the number of quasars known very substantially but have not contributed proportionately to an understanding of the collective properties because of the selection effects. To fully exploit the spectral searches we have developed the technique of automated quasar detection (AQD) using objective-prism plates from the UK Schmidt Telescope, the COSMOS measuring machine at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, and the STARLINK nodes at Durham and Edinburgh.

AbstractMeasurements made with the COSMOS machine on deep objectiveprism photographs taken with the UK 1.2m Schmidt Telescope are being used to obtain approximate redshifts (accurate to ~ 0.01 in z) for large numbers of galaxies in fields near the South Galactic Pole. The data are suitable for investigations of the distribution of galaxies, such as the detection of large-scale density enhancements or voids.

The object (α1950 = 18h04m.3; δ1950 = −8o56!4) was discovered in a 103a-E+RG 1 objective prism plate taken with the 92/67-cm Schmidt telescope of the Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago (Italy). It presents only the Hα emission and no stellar continuum; following Kohoutek (1965, 1969, 1972) it is a bona fide planetary nebula. This classification is confirmed by the appearance of the object in the red and infrared plates of the Near Infrared Photographic Survey of the galactic plane (Sabbadin, 1986): it is quite bright in the red plate and almost invisible in the infrared one.

The most unambiguous way to discover new emission-line galaxies (ELGs) is directly by the presence of their lines, using objective-prism plates of adequate resolution. The first survey using this technique was developed by Smith in 1975 with the 0.6 m CTIO Curtis Schmidt Telescope. The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is carrying out a survey of ELGs with the Schmidt Telescope at Calar Alto (Almería, Spain) using the presence of Ha in emission in IIIa-F prism plates as selection criterion. The observational procedure and results are described in Rego et al. 1989; Zamorano et al. 1990; Zamorano et al. 1993.

We present a new survey of emission line galaxies, performed with the ESO 1 m Schmidt telescope equipped with the 4° objective prism using IIIa-J photographic emulsion. The plates are digitized with the MAMA microdensitometer. A subsequent reduction of the block scans gives redshifts with a mean accuracy of 160 km/s−1, and spectrophotometric measurements of the intensity and equivalent widths of the principal emission lines. A brief discussion is given of the possible extension of quantitative reduction of slitless spectroscopy to archive plates and future large CCD array frames.

In an earlier paper by Sanduleak et al. (1978) a listing was given of 102 confirmed and probable planetary nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud detected on objective-prism plates taken with the Curtis Schmidt telescope at Cerro Tololo. Subsequently, deeper coverage was obtained on nitrogen-baked Kodak IIIa-J plates plus GG 455 filter exposed for 90 minutes. The thin prism was again used to provide a dispersion of about 1500 Å mm−1 at Hβ and the spectra were unwidened. An additional 25 planetary nebula candidates were found on this new plate material to show the requisite characteristics, i.e. they display (a) a stellar appearance, (b) [OIII] λλ5007, 4959 strongly in emission, and (c) no evidence of a continuum.

In this paper we present some HR diagrams constructed using data from theMichigan Spectral Catalogues. Houk (1975) has been systematically reclassifying the Henry Draper stars on the MK system, from the south pole northward. Objective-prism plates, with a reciprocal dispersion of 108 Å/mm, have been taken with the Michigan Curtis Schmidt telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. The spectra are classified visually from the plates, and the results are put onto IBM cards and magnetic tape from which the catalogues are produced.

AbstractFrom a series of 4° objective-prism plates obtained on the 1 m Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, 20 new Hα emission line stars were found. The intensity of Hα emission line was evaluated for these stars. An additional sample of probable Hα emission stars was also found. We present here details and some observational features of these stars. The total number of Hα emission line stars estimated for the surveyed area is about 80.
