Research into the norm of internality ( Beauvois & Dubois, 1988 ) has shown that the expression of internal causal explanations is socially valued in social judgment. However, the value attributed to different types of internal explanations (e.g., efforts vs. traits) is far from homogeneous. This study used the Weiner (1979 ) tridimensional model to clarify the factors explaining the social utility attached to internal versus external explanations. Three dimensions were manipulated: locus of causality, controllability, and stability. Participants (N = 180 students) read the explanations expressed by appliants during a job interview. They then described the applicants on the French version of the revised causal dimension scale and rated their future professional success. Results indicated that internal-controllable explanations were the most valued. In addition, perceived internal and external control of explanations were significant predictors of judgments.

The current study aims at identifying the effect of internal control on the competitive advantage of the bank with its three dimensions (administrative, financial and operational control) on the competitive advantage of the bank. The analytical, descriptive and deductive approaches were applied in the current study. The current study is a field study in terms of nature and explanatory in terms of purpose because it aims at revealing the cause and effect between internal control and competition. In terms of time horizon, it is a cross-sectional study applied on a sample that composes of all employees of the internal control department in banks.137 questionnaires were distributed to the employees of Internal Control Department of the banks; 106 of which were retrieved, with a recovery rate of 77.36%. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to test the hypotheses of the study and to answer its questions through Simple & Multiple Linear Regression. Among the most important results of the study was a statistically significant effect of internal control (administrative, financial and operational control) on the competitive advantage of the bank. The study recommended the establishment of an efficient internal control department through linking it to the director of audit or the general manager, and the feedback of such department shall be taken into consideration and the reasons of such feedback shall be identified without delay in order to reduce the risks, increase profits and raise the level of performance, and thus, increase the competitive advantage of the bank.

The article is devoted to one of the most urgent problems of the social life – to the identifying the risks of young people’s deviance. For modern Russian realities, the growth of deviant phenomena in a given social group is characteristic. This testifies to the shortcomings of the organization of preventive social control, which is not limited to the development of a policy on prevention, but is more dependent on professional practices and ideas about the risks of deviance in the discourses of various control agents. The article presents the main approaches to understanding risks, the importance of studying risks in everyday professional practices of control agents is examined. The main attention is paid to the presentation of the research results, the purpose of which was to identify the general and specific in the content of discourses of social control agents regarding the risks of deviance of youth. The discourses of the main agents of control – police, school, social service institutions (state and non-state) are considered. The author comes to the conclusion that in the police and teacher discourses, an institutional approach, involving the use of external control of behavior, is predominantly used. The discourse of social security institutions is closer to the modern concepts of riskand protective factors, based on the need to consider life situations of youth and the development of internal control. This article may be of interest to specialists working in the field of the sociology of youth, the sociology of the family, social work, as well as to representatives of all agents of preventive social control.

The research reported here examined the desirability and social utility of causal explanations. The first two studies analyzed the causal explanations (internal vs. external) of desirable and undesirable events spontaneously chosen by students to make a good impression on their teachers (self-presentation paradigm). They also compared these students' self-presentational strategies (internal vs. self-serving vs. modest vs. external) with their judgments (judge-paradigm) about four student-targets, each characterized by one of the four strategies, thus including their own, to explain the causes of the same desirable and undesirable events. Study 3 explored how teachers of students in the second study judge the same four student-targets used in the previous studies. Based on the distinction between two types of values - desirability and social utility - it was hypothesized that all participants, even students who previously adopted a desirable self-serving strategy, would in the judge-paradigm prefer the internal target, given the social utility of internal explanations. The hypotheses were confirmed. The relevance of these results for a conception of social utility of internal causal explanations is discussed.

The present research examines the social value attributed to endorsing the belief in a just world for self (BJW-S) and for others (BJW-O) in a Western society. We conducted four studies in which we asked participants to assess a target who endorsed BJW-S vs. BJW-O either strongly or weakly. Results showed that endorsement of BJW-S was socially valued and had a greater effect on social utility judgments than it did on social desirability judgments. In contrast, the main effect of endorsement of BJW-O was to reduce the target’s social desirability. The results also showed that the effect of BJW-S on social utility is mediated by the target’s perceived individualism, whereas the effect of BJW-S and BJW-O on social desirability is mediated by the target’s perceived collectivism.

This chapter examines the social functions of speaker-oriented attitude datives in Levantine Arabic. It analyzes these datives as perspectivizers used by a speaker to instruct her hearer to view her as a form of authority in relation to him, to the content of her utterance, and to the activity they are both involved in. The nature of this authority depends on the sociocultural, situational, and co-textual context, including the speaker’s and hearer’s shared values and beliefs, their respective identities, and the social acts employed in interaction. The chapter analyzes specific instances of speaker-oriented attitude datives as used in different types of social acts (e.g., commands, complaints) and in different types of settings (e.g., family talk, gossip). It also examines how these datives interact with facework, politeness, and rapport management.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Control beliefs can protect against age-related declines in functioning. It is unclear whether neighborhood characteristics shape how much control people perceive over their life. This article studies associations of neighborhood characteristics with control beliefs of residents of a diverse metropolitan area (Berlin, Germany). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> We combine self-report data about perceptions of control obtained from participants in the Berlin Aging Study II (<i>N</i> = 507, 60–87 years, 51% women) with multisource geo-referenced indicators of neighborhood characteristics using linear regression models. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Findings indicate that objective neighborhood characteristics (i.e., unemployment rate) are indeed tied to perceptions of control, in particular, how much control participants feel others have over their lives. Including neighborhood characteristics in part doubled the amount of explained variance compared with a reference model covarying for demographic characteristics only (from <i>R</i>2 = 0.017 to <i>R</i>2 = 0.030 for internal control beliefs; <i>R</i>2 = 0.056 to <i>R</i>2 = 0.102 for external control beliefs in chance; <i>R</i>2 = 0.006 to <i>R</i>2 = 0.030 for external control beliefs in powerful others). <b><i>Discussion/Conclusion:</i></b> Findings highlight the importance of access to neighborhood resources for control beliefs across old age and can inform interventions to build up neighborhood characteristics which might be especially helpful in residential areas with high unemployment.

This volume highlights the central role of the human factor in cybercrime and the need to develop a more interdisciplinary research agenda to understand better the constant evolution of online harms and craft more effective responses. The term “human factor” is understood very broadly and encompasses individual, institutional, and societal dimensions. It covers individual human behaviors and the social structures that enable collective action by groups and communities of various sizes, as well as the different types of institutional assemblages that shape societal responses. This volume is organized around three general themes whose complementary perspectives allow us to map the complex interplay between offenders, machines, and victims, moving beyond static typologies to offer a more dynamic analysis of the cybercrime ecology and its underlying behaviors. The contributions use quantitative and qualitative methodologies and bring together researchers from the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, and Canada.
