Sometimes there is a doubt in society, especially Muslims today about food and consumables that have been mixed in terms of content. The purpose of this study is to see the extent of istihlak and istihalah methods in the production of a halal product in Malaysia. Library studies have been used in establishing the basis of decision making for these two methods, views and differences of opinion between the fuqaha on various fiqh school of thought are also highlighted based on their main books. Furthermore, istihlak and istihalah's position in halal product processing in Malaysia is reviewed by examining the enactments and related acts. In addition, the fatwa and legal provisions decided by the authorized party, The National Council of Fatwa Commitee Malaysia were also reviewed to evaluate the application of this method more thoroughly. The study found that istihlak and istihalah methods used in the production of halal products in Malaysia are only in a narrow and restricted context as practice in the Syafie school of thought. Priority to the Syafie school of thought which is the official sects of the country in the determination and interpreting of the law and fatwa continues to be maintained in order to safeguard the harmony and well-being of society in general.

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in the measurement of well-being of individuals and societies. Influenced by the “beyond GDP” initiative, in 2012 the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) and the National Council for Economics and Labour launched the Equitable and Sustainable Well-being (BES, from the Italian acronym of “Benessere Equo e Sostenibile”) project, a set of 134 indicators aimed at capturing the Italian well-being. Lately, the debate on how to measure the well-being moved from the national level to the local one. Following this new trend, ISTAT introduced a set of 88 indicators for the local well-being (at NUTS3 level), the so called “Provinces’ BES”. Based on this project, aim of the paper is to provide an exploratory analysis for detecting groups of Italian provinces that share similar well-being profiles. In particular, we first apply a factor analysis with the aim to reduce the high number of indicators and, grounded on these results, we then create groups of the Italian provinces, applying the cluster analysis, in order to find similarity among them. Finally, based on the result of the factor analysis, for each domain and for each Italian province, we construct a composite indicator that is a linear combination of the estimated factor scores, with weights based on the Gini index of concentration.

Abstract Recently, a new approach for measuring well-being was developed by eighteen European countries in the wake of the “Beyond GDP movement” started in the 1990 and continued by the Stiglitz Commission. Among these European economies, eleven of them use measures of well-being for monitoring public policy. The Italian Statistical Institute (Istat) jointly with the National Council for Economics and Labor (CNEL) developed a multi-dimensional framework for measuring “equitable and sustainable well-being” (Bes) and since 2013 Istat publishes an annual report on well-being. The Bes framework is continuously updated to take into account new challenges: the exploitation of new data sources, to produce better indicators; new ways for making the communication more effective and foster public awareness; the inclusion of well-being indicators in the budget documents, as established by law. Especially for the latter, the Italian Bes can be considered a forerunner and, more generally, the Italian experience is one of the most relevant at the European level, showing potential of become a benchmark for other countries. This article illustrates the development of the Italian Bes, focusing on its recent progresses and challenges.

Abstract Upon the outbreak of COVID-19, recommendations to cease all non-essential in-person social services were mandated across the United States to prevent transmission to non-infected individuals. As a result, approximately 96% of all senior centers in the United States were closed to in-person programming (National Council on Aging, 2020). LGBT older adults in particular were at higher risk of isolation and declines in overall health as they were more likely to live alone, experience loneliness or have less immediate family support systems when compared to non-LGBT older adults (Yang, Chu & Salmon, 2017). The purpose of this presentation is to explore how LGBT older adult participants in senior centers transitioned to virtual programming during the pandemic. Using a risk-resiliency theory framework, the purpose of this presentation is to share the impact of virtual programming on the health and well-being of LGBT community-dwelling older adults. An exploratory, cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing an online survey to understand their needs, concerns and experiences. Participants reported a relatively easy adaptation to technology, steady participation in programs and services, satisfaction with virtual senior center programming and a consistent sense of engagement with their peers. Higher levels of engagement with senior center programs were associated with greater perceptions of social support. Additionally, stronger perceptions of social support and participation in exercise and fitness programming were associated with higher life satisfaction and lesser symptoms of depression and anxiety. Strategies for outreach, engagement and service provision will be presented.

Abstract Researchers in the field of aging rely on various measures of financial security to assess the needs of older adults and the outcomes of interventions. Recently, subjective measures have gained attention among researchers and organizations that serve older adults. This symposium brings together researchers from academia, government, and the non-profit sector to discuss the relationship between subjective financial well-being and objective financial situation. The first project describes the relationship between the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Financial Well-being Score and the Elder Index. The CFPB Financial Well-Being Score provides a standardized and validated measure of a person’s sense of financial security and freedom in the present and future. The Elder Index provides a measure of older adults’ income against the average income needed for adults age 65 or older to live independently in their communities. The second project discusses the findings of a study into the changes in outcomes among older adults assisted through the National Council on Aging’s Benefits Enrollments Centers. The third project describes the overall findings and changes in financial well-being among SCSEP participants who attended a series of financial education workshops offered through the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging’s subsidiary Empowering and Strengthening Ohio’s People. Together, the studies show that both measures are, on average, strongly correlated and predictive of a range of factual experiences such as material hardship and financial stress. The studies, however, show that subjective measures may help identify and target underlying behavioral and attitudinal factors that influence people’s satisfaction with their economic situation.

Abstract Older adults who experience food insecurity (4.6 million) often have worse health outcomes. Food insecure older adults consume less nutrients, which puts them at greater risk of developing chronic diseases. They are at increased risk of falls due the impact of poor nutrition on muscle mass, bone density, and balance. Low-income older adults are often forced to choose between buying groceries and paying other bills. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) plays an important role in reducing food insecurity. SNAP enables older adults to buy the nutritious food they need, while freeing up resources to pay for everyday things to meet their health needs such as prescription drugs. Research shows that medication adherence increases when low-income older adults enroll in SNAP. Despite the beneficial impact of enrolling in SNAP, it’s estimated that 55% of eligible adults age 60 and older are not participating in this critical program. To understand which older adults are missing out on SNAP, the National Council on Aging engaged researchers at Leading Age LTSS Center at UMass Boston to analyze data from the 2014 Health and Retirement Study. The results show that some of the most vulnerable older adult populations are less likely to participate in SNAP even though they are eligible (i.e., Hispanic, age 75 and older, those who are not utilizing healthcare, etc.). The findings suggest that more targeted outreach to these groups is needed to ensure that the most vulnerable populations of older adults access this critical benefit.

The university professor suffers high pressure to achieve productivity and performs under work conditions that are not always satisfactory. This study seeks to analyze the subjective well-being, the time-use strategies, and the satisfaction with their use of time of PhD-holding professors with and without productivity grants from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). A total of 83 professors participated in the study (48 with productivity grants), with an average age of 50 years. A total of 89% of participants were from public institutions. The majority of the participants exhibited high levels of negative affect and low-average levels of satisfaction with their use of time. There was no difference in the subjective well-being or in the satisfaction with the use of time when comparing professors who had received a CNPq grant with professors who had not received a CNPq grant. The most important reason for dissatisfaction with the use of time was an excess of work, whereas peer recognition was the primary achievement obtained with the work. How work demands and conditions influence the well-being of the professors is discussed in this study.

Reproductive Health is one of the significant issues today as it is a pivotal part of general health. Reproductive health was defined in International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) as “the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive system and to its functions and processes”(ICPD Programme of Action, paragraph 7.2). Worldwide maternal deaths fell by almost 44 percent from 1990 to 2015, but about 830 mothers still die daily in delivery cases or as a result of pregnancy or post partum causes. The health status of tribal women is very poor (Ramana, 2015). The Tai-Aitons are a recognizable scheduled tribe of Assam having their own distinctive culture and tradition. They have been recognized as Scheduled Tribes (Hills) and are listed as Man-Tai Speaking people by the Government of Assam. No specific data about the total population of the Tai-Aitons are available. Though data are not accessible, but various studies exhibit that population of Tai-Aitons is very less. There are number of factors which may influence the reproductive health of the above mentioned women of Tai-aiton community. So, the basic objective of this study is to find out and analyze the main determinants of the reproductive health of women of Tai-Aiton community of Assam. Data is collected from two development blocks of Karbi-Anglong district and one development block of Golaghat district (total 210 households) based on the data of Man-Tai Speaking National Council, Assam, Population Cum Education Census (2006). The data related to this study are collected from August 2019 to October 2019. In order to examine the influence of socio-economic and demographic factors on the reproductive health of the sample women, Multiple Linear Regression analysis has been carried out where value of Reproductive Health Index is taken as dependent variable. The result of the study find out that live birth ever born, education of women, distance to PHCs, occupation of husbands, age at birth of the females and infant mortality affect significantly and occupation of women, monthly income, exposure to mass media and birth interval does not significantly affect the reproductive health of the Tai-Aiton women of Assam. Thus, ensuring a better reproductive health of the women, it is mandatory to improve education among girls particularly beyond high school in tribal areas because education impacts upon the health status particularly the reproductive health status of women. In tribal areas, the Integrated Maternal and Child Health programme may also play an important role in improving the education level mostly take an important step to make aware of the tribal women about their health particularly their nutrition level.
