AbstractThe paper presents a semiotic interpretation of the phenomenological debate on the notion of person, focusing in particular on Edmund Husserl, Max Scheler, and Edith Stein. The semiotic interpretation lets us identify the categories that orient the debate: collective/individual and subject/object. As we will see, the phenomenological analysis of the relation between person and social units such as the community, the association, and the mass shows similarities to contemporary socio-semiotic models. The difference between community, association, and mass provides an explanation for the establishment of legal systems. The notion of person we inherit from phenomenology can also be useful in facing juridical problems raised by the use of non-human decision-makers such as machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence applications.

PHENOMENOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EXPERIENCE OF PALLIATIVE CARE FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS OF ONCOLOGICAL PATIENTS The study raises the experiences of the informal caregivers of cancer patients in palliative care and performs phenomenological analysis of them. Field, cross-sectional, descriptive and qualitative research was performed at a hospital in the west of Paraná with seven caregivers in the outpatient, inpatient and ICU sectors. Data analysis was based on the work of Edith Stein La strutura della persona umana (1933/2013). The research shows the fragility of the caregivers in front of the understanding of the structures that make up the human being, choose the corporeity as a way of recognizing the other, they need a formation for interiority and spirituality.

To understand the role of psychology as science according Edith Stein, we have to clarify the main features of her philosophical anthropology. Through the phenomenological analysis of the lived experiences she discovers the complex structure of the human being: the bodily, the psychic, and the spiritual life. The psychic level is ruled by causality, but it is different from the causality that we find in the nature, because it is not deterministic. In the psyche there is also an implicit motivation, but the explicit one is present in the spiritual life. For this reason, according to her, psychology, even if it is the science of the psyche, cannot avoid dealing with the spiritual aspect of the human being. Stein’s position is very important in order to grasp the limits of a psychology that follows the model of natural sciences.
