AbstractEndometriosis is an inflammatory disease which diagnostics is difficult and often invasive, therefore non-invasive diagnostics methods and parameters are needed for endometriosis detection. The aim of our study was to analyse the glycosylation of native serum IgG and IgG isolated from sera of women classified as: with endometriosis, without endometriosis but with some benign ginecological disease, and control group of healthy women, in context of its utility for differentiation of advanced endometriosis from the group of healthy women. IgG sialylation and galactosylation/agalactosylation degree was determined using specific lectins: MAA and SNA detecting sialic acid α2,3- and α2,6-linked, respectively, RCA-I and GSL-II specific to terminal Gal and terminal GlcNAc, respectively. The results of ROC and cluster analysis showed that the serum IgG MAA-reactivity, sialylation and agalactosylation factor may be used as supplementary parameters for endometriosis diagnostics and could be taken into account as a useful clinical tool to elucidate women with high risk of endometriosis development. Additionally, we have shown that the analysis of native serum IgG glycosylation, without the prior time-consuming and expensive isolation of the protein, is sufficient to differentiation endometriosis from a group of healthy women.

Since the occurrence of swine salmonellosis has increased over time and control strategies other than biosecurity are highly recommended, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of vaccination with Salmonella Choleraesuis and Salmonella Typhimurium bacterins in pigs. Two experimental groups were formed: G1, animals immunized with two doses of a commercial vaccine (n = 20); G2, control group (n = 20). After vaccination, all pigs were orally challenged (D0) with 108 CFU of Salmonella Typhimurium and evaluated for 40 days. Every 10 days after D0, five piglets from each experimental group were euthanized and submitted to the necroscopic examination, when organ samples were collected. Blood samples and rectal swabs were collected before the first dose of the vaccine (D−42), before the second dose (D−21), before the challenge (D0), and thereafter, every three days until D39. Blood count, serum IgG measurement by ELISA, and the excretion of Salmonella Typhimurium in feces were evaluated. While the results from blood count and serum IgG concentration did not differ, the detection and excretion of Salmonella between G1 and G2 differed (p < 0.05). Therefore, it was observed that this vaccine partially protected the animals against experimental infection with Salmonella Typhimurium, reducing the excretion of bacteria in feces.

AbstractIntroductionElectroencephalogram (EEG) is a potentially useful clinical tool for aiding diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We hypothesized we can increase the accuracy of EEG for aiding diagnosis of AD using microstates, which are epochs of quasi-stability at the millisecond scale.MethodsEEG was collected from two independent cohorts of AD and control participants and a cohort of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients with four-year clinical follow-up. Microstates were analysed, including a novel measure of complexity.ResultsMicrostate complexity significantly decreased in AD, and when combined with a spectral EEG measure, could classify AD with sensitivity and specificity >80%. These results were validated on an independent cohort and were also found to be generalizable to predict progression from MCI to AD. Additionally, microstates associated with the frontoparietal network were altered in AD.DiscussionEEG has the potential to be a non-invasive functional biomarker that predicts progression from MCI to AD.

Abstract Introduction:Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the oldest procedure among the early biological treatments introduced in psychiatry. However, the most debated and treatment-limiting adverse effect of ECT is amnesia. Therefore, due to the restriction of the use of drugs to manage amnesia in patients undergoing ECT, the present study investigated the effect of reflexology on amnesia. Methods:In this randomized controlled trial, 68 patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups. The intervention group received foot reflexology with olive oil 20 minutes a day for 3 days, while the control group was given a gentle foot rub with olive oil 20 minutes a day for 3 days. The amnesia rate of all patients was measured by the Galveston Orientation and Amnesia Test (GOAT) 30 minutes after the end of ECT. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 11.5 and t-test, chi-squared test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Results:The results showed that reflexology significantly increased recalling scores in the intervention group compared to the control group. Foot reflexology seems to be effective in managing amnesia in patients after ECT. Conclusion:Foot reflexology, as a relatively simple, inexpensive, and non-invasive technique with few side effects, can be used to manage amnesia in patients after ECT.

Subject. The article considers clustering of insurance companies as a type of informatization of economy for practical application by the internal control system. Objectives. The purpose is to present clusters and give their interpretation for insurance companies in relation to internal control; identify the possibility of clustering, using the Deductor Studio platform developed by Base Group for internal control systems. Methods. The study employs techniques of statistical research and data processing, mathematical methods, methods of grouping, and cluster analysis. Results. Clusters are presented by several indicators of insurance companies. The study reveals heterogeneity in the results of distribution according to the rating of companies in terms of various indicators. It confirms the need to use the cluster analysis in the internal control system. Conclusions. Cluster analysis enables the internal control system to take into account all data regardless of their amount, and avoid data sampling. It reduces the level of errors in the results of analysis and control.

Objectives. To determine the prevalence of ultrasound features suggestive of adenomyosis in women undergoing surgery for endometriosis compared with a control group of healthy women without endometriosis. Methods. Retrospective case-control study comparing women with intractable pain or infertility, who underwent transvaginal ultrasound and subsequent laparoscopic surgery, with a control group of healthy women without a previous history of endometriosis. A diagnosis of adenomyosis on TVUS was made based on asymmetrical myometrial thickening, linear striations, myometrial cysts, hyperechoic islands, irregular endometrial-myometrial junction, parallel shadowing, and localized adenomyomas and analyzed for one sign and for three or more signs. Results. The study and control groups included 94 and 60 women, respectively. In the study group, women were younger and had more dysmenorrhea and infertility symptoms. The presence of any sonographic feature of adenomyosis, as well as three or more signs, was found to be more prevalent in the study group, which persisted after controlling for age, for all features but linear striations. Women in the study group who had five or more sonographic features of adenomyosis had more than a threefold risk of suffering from infertility (OR = 3.19, p=0.015, 95% CI; 1.25–8.17). There was no association with disease severity at surgery. Conclusions. Sonographic features of adenomyosis are more prevalent in women undergoing surgery for endometriosis compared to healthy controls. Women with more than five features had an increased risk of infertility.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to verify the effect of Cognition Enhancement Program (CEP) using toy-robot for children aged 5–10 years. We thought that CEP using toy-robot might be a more kids-friendly method for improving cognitive ability than traditional programs. The enhancement of cognitive functions such as attention, response inhibition, memory, and working memory after the cognition training were the focus of the study.MethodsOne hundred and twenty children aged 5 to 10 were ramdomly assigned to 3 groups: (1) experimental group receiving CEP training using toy-robot, (2) control group receiving previously developed internet-based cognitive training, (3) waiting list. The children of experiment and control groups received individual 8 training sessions. The effect of the program was measured with Smart Toyweb's cognitive assessment tools we had developed (smart device based assessment) as well as traditional neuropsychological tests throughout 3 times (pre-training, post-training, and 1-month follow-up).ResultsThe training is in progress since it started in October 2016. We observed some of children on the CEP training tend to show improvement of cognitive function. The final assessment is planned for February 2017.ConclusionsThe CEP using toy-robot could be very promising and useful in that it is a non-invasive and non-pharmacological treatment for children with attention or memory problem in home and clinical settings.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract Background: Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ae-COPD) has a gold standard treatment: non-invasive ventilation (NIV). However, this treatment sometime fails, and an invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is required. The extracorporeal CO₂ removal (ECCO₂R) device can be an alternative to intubation. The aim of the study is to evaluate ECCO₂R efficiency and safety and enlighten ECCO₂R benefit/risk compared to IMV.Methods: Consecutive ae-COPD patients for whom NIV failed were retrospectively analyzed during two periods: before and after the ECCO₂R device implementation in our ICU in 2015. We considered the before period as standard of care and patients were treated with IMV. The ECCO₂R device was a pump-driven veno-venous system (Xenios AG).Results: The two groups (ECCO₂R n = 26 and Control group n = 25) were comparable at baseline except for the BMI which was significantly higher in the ECCO₂R group (30kg/m² versus 25kg/m²). The pH and PaCO₂ improved significantly in both groups. The mean time on ECCO₂R was 5,4 days whereas IMV lasted 27 days in the control group. Four patients needed IMV in the ECCO₂R group (of which 3 occurred after ECCO₂R weaning). There were 7 major bleeding events with ECCO₂R and 3 led to premature termination of ECCO₂R. In the control group, there were 8 ventilator associated pneumonia, 25 haemodynamic instability and 6 self extubations. The mean time in ICU and hospital stay in the ECCO₂R and control groups were 18 vs 30 days, 29 vs 49 days, respectively and the 90-day mortality rates were 15% vs 28%.Conclusions: ECCO₂R brings significant improvement on pH and PaCO₂ in ae-COPD patients failing NIV therapy and permit to avoid intubation in 85% with low complication rates compared to IMV. These results have yet to be proven in a larger randomized study.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04882410.
