AbstractTo investigate the feasibility of using ICAM-1-targeted nano ultrasonic contrast to evaluate the degree of inflammatory injury at different stages in the abdominal aorta of rabbits with atherosclerosis (AS). Twenty-five experimental rabbits were assigned to five groups: the control group (A); the week-4 after modeling group (B); the week-8 after modeling group (C); the week-12 after modeling group (D); the week-16 after modeling group (E). All groups were given 2D ultrasonography, conventional ultrasonic contrast (SonoVue), and ICAM-1-targeted nano ultrasonic contrast, respectively. Signal intensity of vascular perfusion was evaluated. Signal intensity of ICAM-1-targeted nano ultrasonic contrast was substantially enhanced and prolonged in the vascular wall of the abdominal bubble aorta increased in B, C, D, and E groups (all P < 0.05). A positive linear correlation between intensity and the expression of ICAM-1 (r = 0.895, P < 0.001). The intensity of outer membrane was enhanced from week 4 to week 12, and both the intima-media membrane and outer membrane were enhanced with double-layer parallel echo at week 16, which was in line with the progression of atherosclerotic plaque inflammatory injury. ICAM-1-targeted nano contrast agent would be possibly a novel non-invasive molecular imaging method for plaque inflammatory injury and site high expression of specific adhesion molecules in early atherosclerotic lesions.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the feasibility of using ICAM-1-carrying targeted nano ultrasonic contrast to evaluate the degree of inflammatory injury at different stages in the abdominal aorta of rabbits with atherosclerosis (AS). Methods Twenty-five experimental rabbits were assigned to five groups: the preoperative control group (A); the week-4 after modeling group(B); the week-8 after modeling group(C); the week-12 after modeling group(D); the week-16 after modeling group(E). All groups were given 2D ultrasonography, conventional ultrasonic contrast (SonoVue), and ICAM-1-carrying targeted nano ultrasonic contrast, respectively. Contrast parameters, including the peak intensity (PI), time to peak (TTP), and area under curve (AUC) of the region of interest, were used to evaluate the characteristics of vascular perfusion contrast. Results ICAM-1-carrying targeted nano ultrasonic contrast showed that the intensity of targeted micro-signals in the vascular wall of the abdominal bubble aorta gradually increased in B, C, D, and E groups (all P < 0.05). A positive linear correlation between PI and AUC and the expression of ICAM-1 (r = 0.893, P < 0.001; r = 0.934, P < 0.001). In ICAM-1-carrying targeted nano ultrasonic contrast, delayed imaging of the vascular wall of the abdominal aorta was observed, the outer membrane was thickened from week 4 to week 12, and both the intima-media membrane and outer membrane were thickened and with double-layer parallel echo at week 16, which was in line with the progression of atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability. Conclusion ICAM-1-carrying targeted nano contrast agent could evaluate the degree of inflammatory injury related to atherosclerotic progression and site high expression of specific adhesion molecules in early atherosclerotic lesions.

Background and Objectives: recent studies suggest an implication of immune mechanisms in atherosclerotic disease. In this paper, the interaction between inflammation, calcification, and atherosclerosis on the vessel walls of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is described and evaluated. Materials and Methods: patients with stage V CKD, either on pre-dialysis (group A) or on hemodialysis (HD) for at least 2 years (group B), in whom a radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (RCAVF) was created, were included in the study. The control group included healthy volunteers who received radial artery surgery after an accident. The expressions of inflammatory cells, myofibroblasts, and vascular calcification regulators on the vascular wall were estimated, and, moreover, morphometric analysis was performed. Results: the expressions of CD68(+) cells, matrix carboxyglutamic acid proteins (MGPs), the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kB (RANK) and RANK ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG), were significantly increased in CKD patients compared to the controls p = 0.02; p = 0.006; p = 0.01; and p = 0.006, respectively. In morphometric analysis, the I/M and L/I ratios had significant differences between CKD patients and the controls 0.3534 ± 0.20 vs. 0.1520 ± 0.865, p = 0.003, and 2.1709 ± 1.568 vs. 4.9958 ± 3.2975, p = 0.03, respectively. The independent variables correlated with the degree of vascular calcification were the intensity of CD34(+), aSMA(+) cells, and OPG, R2 = 0.76, p < 0.0001, and, with intima-media thickness (IMT), the severity of RANKL expression R2 = 0.3, p < 0.0001. Conclusion: atherosclerosis and vascular calcification in CKD seem to be strongly regulated by an immunological and inflammatory activation on the vascular wall.

Background: MicroRNAs have been linked to angiogenesis and could prove to be valuable future therapeutic targets in ischemic cardiovascular diseases. Methods: Ten-week-old male C57Bl/6 mice were subjected to left femoral artery ligation and were treated with microRNA-126 mimic at a dose of 5 mg/kg (Group A, n = 10) or 5 mg/kg microRNA mimic negative control (Group B, n = 10) on days 1, 3, and 7. Laser Doppler imaging was performed to verify successful ligation on day 0 and to evaluate differences in the ischemic-to-normal (I/N) hind limb perfusion ratio on day 28. Muscle tissue expression of microRNA-126 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was determined via PCR.Results: Following microRNA-126 mimic administration in Group A subjects, we noted a stepwise increase in I/N hind limb perfusion ratio (Day 0: 0.364 ± 0.032 vs. Day 8: 0.788 ± 0.049 vs. Day 28: 0.750 ± 0.039, p = 0.001). In Group B a stepwise increase in I/N hind limb perfusion ratio was observed (Day 0: 0.272 ± 0.057 vs. Day 8: 0.382 ± 0.020 vs. Day 28: 0.542 ± 0.028, p = 0.074). Muscle tissue expression of microRNA-126 in the ischemic hind limb of Group A was 350-fold lower compared to the ischemic hind limb of Group B (p < 0.001). A higher expression (14.2-fold) of VEGF in the ischemic hind limb of microRNA-126-treated mice compared to that of control group was detected (p < 0.001). A statistically significant negative correlation was noted between microRNA-126 and VEGF tissue expression levels in the ischemic limbs of the entire study population. Conclusion: MicroRNA-126 delivery in the ischemic hind limb of mice improved vascular perfusion with VEGF upregulation.

The quest for excellence in mental and physical health is not new. We find various references and formulations in Ayurvedic classics meant for promoting mental and physical health of a child. Suvarna Prashan is one of the formulations explained in age old Ayurvedic classic Kashyap Samhita. This formulation is very widely used now days as a memory and immune booster for children. But there is very little systematic documented study which can be used to evaluate the efficacy of the formulation. Suvarna Bhasma was prepared in Ayurved Rasayani Pharmacy, Pune. Madhu and Ghrita were collected from KLE Ayurveda Pharmacy, Belgaum. Suvarna Bindu Prashan was prepared in KLE Ayurved pharmacy, Belgaum. It contains Suvarna Bhasma, Ghrita and Madhu. Twenty apparently healthy male and female children with age group of three to four years were ready to sign inform consent form were selected into two groups each. Subjects in Group A received Suvarna Bindu Prashan where as Group B (Control group) did not receive any treatment. Both the groups were observed for six months. Children in Suvarna Bindu Prashan group showed significant reduction in the scores of eating habits, behavior, mood, temperament and scores of event of illness. However there was no significant difference in the score of sleeping habit. There was significant increase in IQ percentage.

To study whether a sepsis-induced increase in des-Arg9-bradykinin (des-Arg9-BK) and bradykinin (BK) B1-receptor activity participates in the observed increase in pulmonary vascular resistance in neonatal group B streptococcal sepsis (GBS), isometric force bioassays of pulmonary artery (PA) rings were studied, after 4-h exposure to either Krebs or GBS, by using the following protocols: 1) BK dose-response curve, 2) vascular response to BK with N G-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME), and 3) response to des-Arg9-BK (BK metabolite and B1 agonist). PA rings exposed to BK resulted in contraction in the GBS group and a decrease in resting tension in the Control group ( P = 0.034) at a concentration of 10−5 M. GBS-treated PA rings contracted more to des-Arg9-BK than did Controls ( P < 0.001). BK (10−6 M) relaxed preconstricted PA rings incubated in GBS less than BK relaxed Controls ( P < 0.001), and preincubation withl-NAME decreased relaxation in both. These results suggest that GBS decreased endothelium-dependent BK relaxation and increased contractile response to des-Arg9-BK. We speculate that this occurs secondary to upregulation of B1 receptors reflected by B1-agonist-mediated PA contraction.

Geriatric patients in various outpatient department (OPDs) have been found to agonize from elder abuse and neglect (EAN). Such suffering imposes depressive states within individuals, which in turn affects treatment compliance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of sensitization (psychotherapeutic) of family caregivers (FCGs) upon two denture treatment parameters (maintenance and treatment satisfaction) among EAN patients and compare the differences in outcome with non-abused patients. A survey of completely edentulous subjects (n = 860, aged 41–80 years) provided a sampling frame of 332 EAN patients from which 150 patients (including FCGs) fulfilling the study criteria were distributed (simple random, convenient) into two groups (Group A—control, Group B—test). FCG sensitization for subjects in Group B was performed by a clinical psychologist in 2–4 short (30 min) sessions. Demographic characteristics (frequency) were measured using a self-reported questionnaire, denture maintenance was measured using a denture hygiene index (scores), and treatment satisfaction was analyzed on a 10-point visual analog scale. Relevant data were calculated for means and absolute/relative frequencies. Any difference between two groups was estimated using an unpaired t-test while the level of relationship was determined by Karl Pearson’s test at a p-value of < 0.05. The results showed highest frequency (38.6%) for neglect, with elder neglect (EN) being most common (38.14% alone and 14% in combination). EN was found more if the FCG was a son (52%), in the age group (21–30 years), and with low education and low income (75%). Patients whose FCGs were counselled (Group B) demonstrated low denture plaque scores (mean = 1.38 ± 0.618), while demonstrating comparatively higher scores in six different parameters of treatment satisfaction. Differences between the two groups for both parameters were also found to be statistically significant. Psychotherapeutic counselling in the form of FCG sensitization brings better results of denture maintenance and treatment satisfaction.

Abstract Objective To investigate the impact of microecological preparation combined with modified low-carbon diet on the glucolipid metabolism and cardiovascular complication in obese patients. Methods From August 2017 to July 2020, 66 obese patients were recruited, and administrated with an modified low-carbon diet with (group A) or without (Group B) microecology preparation and a balanced diet in control group (group C) for 6 months. Meanwhile, 20 volunteers administrated with a balanced diet were recruited as the healthy control group (group D). Results After 6-month intervention, obese subjects in group A and B showed significant improvement of body and liver fat mass, reduction of serum lipid levels, intestinal barrier function markers, insulin resistance index (IRI), high blood pressure (HBP) and carotid intima thickness, as compared with subjects in group C. More importantly, subjects in group A had better improvement of vascular endothelial elasticity and intimal thickness than subjects in group B. However, these intervention had no effect on carotid atherosclerotic plaque. Conclusion Administration of microecological preparation combined with modified low-carbon diet had better improvement of intestinal barrier function, glucose and lipid metabolism, and cardiovascular complications than low-carbon diet in obese patients, but the effect of a simple low-carb diet on carotid atherosclerotic plaque need to be further addressed.

Abstract Background This study explored the comparison of the thermal insulation effect of incubator to infusion thermometer in laparoscopic hysterectomy. Methods We assigned 75 patients enrolled in the study randomly to three groups: Group A: Used warming blanket; group B: Used warming blanket and infusion thermometer; group C: Used warming blanket and incubator. The nasopharyngeal temperature at different time points during the operation served as the primary outcome. Results The nasopharyngeal temperature of the infusion heating group was significantly higher than that of the incubator group 60 min from the beginning of surgery (T3): 36.10 ± 0.20 vs 35.81 ± 0.20 (P<0.001)90 min from the beginning of surgery (T4): 36.35 ± 0.20 vs 35.85 ± 0.17 (P<0.001). Besides, the nasopharyngeal temperature of the incubator group was significantly higher compared to that of the control group 60 min from the beginning of surgery (T3): 35.81 ± 0.20 vs 35.62 ± 0.18 (P<0.001); 90 min from the beginning of surgery (T4): 35.85 ± 0.17 vs 35.60 ± 0.17 (P<0.001). Regarding the wake-up time, that of the control group was significantly higher compared to the infusion heating group: 24 ± 4 vs 21 ± 4 (P = 0.004) and the incubator group: 24 ± 4 vs 22 ± 4 (P = 0.035). Conclusion Warming blanket (38 °C) combined infusion thermometer (37 °C) provides better perioperative thermal insulation. Hospitals without an infusion thermometer can opt for an incubator as a substitute. Trial registration This trial was registered with ChiCTR2000039162, 20 October 2020.
