Negative index materials are artificial structures whose refractive index has negative value over some frequency range. The study of these materials has attracted a lot of attention in the scientific community not only because of their many potential interesting applications but also because of challenges in understanding their intriguing properties due to the sign-changing coefficients in equations describing their properties. In this paper, we establish cloaking using complementary media for electromagnetic waves. This confirms and extends the suggestions of Lai et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 (2009) 093901] for the full Maxwell equations. The analysis is based on the reflecting and removing localized singularity techniques, three-sphere inequalities, and the fact that the Maxwell equations can be reduced to a weakly coupled second order elliptic equations.

The possibility of using bolometric converters of microwave power from the State primary standard of the unit of power of electromagnetic waves in waveguide and coaxial paths GET 167-2017, which has a frequency range from 37,5 to 78,33 GHz, in an extended frequency range up to 220 GHz, is shown. Studies of semiconductor bolometric converters of microwave power in an extended frequency range have confirmed good agreement and smooth frequency characteristics of the effective efficiency factor of the converters. Based on the research results, the State working standard of the unit of power of electromagnetic waves of 0,1–10 mW in the frequency range from 37,5 to 220 GHz 3.1.ZZT.0288.2018 was approved. The technical characteristics of the working standard of the unit of power of electromagnetic oscillations in an extended frequency range from 37,5 to 220 GHz are given.

Using the semiclassical approach for the description of the propagation of the electromagnetic waves in optically active isotropic media we derive a new formula for the circular dichroism parameter. The theory is based on the idea of the time damped electromagnetic wave interacting with the molecules of the sample. In this theory, the Lambert-Beer law need not be taken as an empirical law, however, it follows naturally from the requirement that the electromagnetic wave obeys the Maxwell equations.

This chapter examines solutions to the Maxwell equations in a vacuum: monochromatic plane waves and their polarizations, plane waves, and the motion of a charge in the field of a wave (which is the principle upon which particle detection is based). A plane wave is a solution of the vacuum Maxwell equations which depends on only one of the Cartesian spatial coordinates. The monochromatic plane waves form a basis (in the sense of distributions, because they are not square-integrable) in which any solution of the vacuum Maxwell equations can be expanded. The chapter concludes by giving the conditions for the geometrical optics limit. It also establishes the connection between electromagnetic waves and the kinematic description of light discussed in Book 1.

Infrared (IR) reflectivities are registered in the frequency range of 50–2000 cm[Formula: see text] for Ag3In5Se9 and Ag3In5Te9 single crystals grown by Bridgman method. Three infrared-active modes are detected in spectra. The optical parameters, real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function, the function of energy losses, refractive index, absorption index and absorption coefficient were calculated from reflectivity experiments. The frequencies of transverse and longitudinal optical modes (TO and LO modes) and oscillator strength were also determined. The bands detected in infrared spectra were tentatively attributed to various vibration types (valence and valence-deformation). The inversion of LO- and TO-mode frequencies of the sandwiched pair was observed for studied crystals.
