Development of BI applications and, in general, Business Intelligence are no longer new concepts for the market. Nevertheless, there is practically no literature of practical significance. This article is aimed at analyzing the author’s practical experience with the generation of conclusions and specific advice for a novice business analyst to use in his work. Inexperienced professionals just starting their careers in BI can face a variety of challenges, especially when dealing with business customers and developers. Therefore, the article pays special attention to the description of research objects and their correct interaction with each other. It also provides a detailed analysis of the initial stages: from the customer’s need to develop an application to setting clear detailed requirements for the contractor. The result of this work was the proposed methodology for step-by-step work and analysis of the difficulties that may be encountered on the way of the “newly minted” business analyst.

Abstract When the operation benefit of an oil and gas pipeline is not enough to cover its operation cost, and the pipeline is no alternative use, seriously damaged, aged or the operation risk exceeds the acceptable range, it is bound to cause serious safety and environmental hazards along the pipeline, especially for the over age pipeline in service, therefore its scientific abandonment and reasonable disposal is particularly important and urgent. Focused on the methods for judging abandonment, retirement modes, cleaning and environmental management of oil and gas pipelines, the characteristics of existing methods for predicting the remaining life of the pipelines and their application in abandonment and disposal are compared and analyzed, and the basis and adaptability of oil and gas pipelines retirement are illuminated. According to the actual situation and environment of the discarded pipelines, the selection basis and applicable conditions of the pipeline and facility disposal methods such as demolition, in-situ shelving and their combination are expounded. It is found that North America has rich experience and mature technology in oil and gas pipeline abandonment and disposal, but many countries, including China, seriously lack scientific and systematic evaluation standards, practical experience, related theoretical and technical investigations. This study has important reference and practical significance for promoting the development of abandonment and disposal technology of an aging oil and gas pipeline, and ensuring the personal safety and ecological environmental protection along the abandoned pipeline. This paper presents the status quo of over age service and abandonment decision-making of oil and gas pipelines in the world, draws lessons from the experience of safety and environmental protection disposal of the global abandoned pipelines, and puts forward the principle and method of abandonment judgment and scientific disposal of the aging pipelines based on residual life evaluation. This method has sufficient basis, strong adaptability and wide application.

This article presents a generalized ontology of product configuration as a step towards a general ontology of configuration, which is needed to reuse and share configuration knowledge. The ontology presented consists of a set of concepts for representing the knowledge on a configuration and the restrictions on possible configurations. The ontology is based on a synthesis of the main approaches to configuration. Earlier approaches are extended with new concepts arising from our practical experience on configurable products. The concepts include components, attributes, resources, ports, contexts, functions, constraints, and relations between these. The main contributions of this work are in the detailed conceptualization of knowledge on product structures and in extending the resource concept with contexts for limiting the availability and use of resources. In addition, constraint sets representing different views on the product are introduced. The ontology is compared with the previous work on configuration. It covers all the principal approaches, that is, connection-based, structure-based, resource-based, and function-based approaches to configuration. The dependencies between the concepts arising from different conceptualizations are briefly analyzed. Several ways in which the ontology could be extended are pointed out.

Purpose In this study, three models were empirically compared, the DeLone and McLean model, the Seddon model and the Modified Seddon model, by measuring the impact of a business intelligence system (BIS) in companies in Peru. After that, the mediators and dependent constructs were analysed to determine if they were behaving properly (a good level of variance explanation and significant relations with others constructs). The study used a sample of 104 users of the BIS, from companies in several important economic sectors, in a quasi-voluntary context and with six constructs: information quality, system quality, service quality, system dependence (system use), user satisfaction and perceived usefulness (individual impact). Design/methodology/approach To interpret the results, the authors used structural equations. The idea was to look for the best fit and explanations for the outcomes. The main difference in these models is that the DeLone and McLean model considers system dependence (system use) as a part of information system success, but in the Seddon model, it is a consequence of it. Findings The Seddon model seems to show the best fit and explanation for the outcomes. After that, a review of the system use construct was realised, because of its limited variance explained and the few significant relations with other constructs, to improve its explanation power in future research. Research limitations/implications It is estimated that the sample includes more than 15 per cent of all the companies that use a BISs in Peru, so the size of the sample is adequate, but it is not entirely random and therefore limits the generalizability of outcomes. Besides that, a sample size that is bigger could be better for the sake of making a more detailed analysis, permitting the use of some items with less power, or the use of another statistical procedure for structural equations such as the Asymptotical Distribution Free, permitting a more detailed analysis (Hair et al., 2006). Originality/value Business intelligence (BI), one of the most important components of information systems (IS), is playing a very relevant role in business in this time of high competition, high amounts of data and new technology. Currently, companies feel pressured to respond quickly to change and complicated conditions in the market, needing to make the correct tactical, operational and strategic decisions (Chugh and Grandhi, 2013). BI is one of the most important drivers of the decade (Gartner, 2013). Big companies of IS are creating special units specialised in BI, helping companies become more efficient and effective in daily operations.

It is well known that a prime essential in bringing about unstable motion in any elastic system is the presence of at least two degrees of freedom. A trailer and its towing vehicle constitute a mechanical system with a number of degrees of freedom, and a main feature of the present problem is the necessity for deciding which are essential factors in the unstable motion and which are trivial or merely incidental. The idea of including all the possible degrees of freedom in the dynamical equations, thereby obtaining a general solution in which the part played by the several parameters can be seen, is quite impracticable. In Part I of the paper the results obtained from the mathematical analysis of the problem are given and discussed. There is a general agreement with practical experience. Part II contains the detailed analysis on which the conclusions in Part I are based. It is emphasized that the main purpose of the analysis is not to enable calculations to be made of the precise critical speed at which snaking begins for any particular combination of tractor and trailer, but to discover what factors make for stability and for instability, and how to design for immunity from snaking at all speeds.

Introduction. Despite the fact that currently theorists have systematized some aspects of scientific knowledge to increase the efficiency of functional support of special performance of rowers, while the formation of prerequisites for improving the training load of qualified athletes aged 16-17 in kayaking and canoeing has not been the subject of special research. This leads to the isolation of the problematic issue that needs to be studied and analyzed. Aim is to analyze the structure of functional support of special working capacity and to form preconditions for improving the training loads of qualified athletes aged 16-17, who specialize in kayaking and canoeing. Material and methods: analysis and generalization of data of scientific and methodical literature sources and the Internet, pedagogical observations and natural pedagogical experiment, instrumental research methods using ergometry, gas analysis, pulsometry, biochemical research methods; methods of mathematical statistics. Results. To optimize the system for assessing the functional support of special performance, a set of indicators was selected that integrally reflect the level of functionality of kayakers. Their assessment is the basis for a more detailed analysis of the structure of the functional support of the special capacity of kayakers 16-17 year old . A more detailed analysis is performed with reduced indicators of cattle capacity and aerobic energy supply, as well as performance. As a rule, it is carried out individually and is aimed at studying the cause of the reduced level of certain indicators. In the course of the research the available material on the problems of control, estimation and interpretation of the most informative and integral indicators of reactions of the cardiorespiratory system (CRS) and energy supply of work is systematized; special working capacity of athletes – kayakers. Conclusion. The presented test results (average-statistical and model values of indicators) showed new possibilities of estimation and interpretation of indicators of functional support of special working capacity of qualified athletes aged 16-17, who specialize in kayaking and canoeing. Systematization of data from special literature and practical experience allowed to establish the prerequisites for improving training loads aimed at forming the structure of functional support for special performance of qualified kayakers, and to identify five groups of exercises.

Business Intelligence can bring critical capabilities to an organization, but the implementation of such capabilities is often plagued with problems. Why is it that certain projects fail, while others succeed? The aim of this article is to identify the factors that are present in successful Business Intelligence projects and to organize them into a framework of critical success factors. A survey was conducted during the spring of 2011 to collect primary data on Business Intelligence projects. Findings confirm that Business Intelligence projects are wrestling with both technological and non-technological problems, but the non-technological problems are found to be harder to solve as well as more time consuming than their counterparts. The study also shows that critical success factors for Business Intelligence projects are different from success factors for Information Systems projects in general. Business Intelligences projects have critical success factors that are unique to the subject matter. Major differences can be found primarily among non-technological factors, such as the presence of a specific business need and a clear vision to guide the project. Success depends on types of project funding, the business value provided by each iteration in the project and the alignment of the project to a strategic vision for Business Intelligence at large. Furthermore, the study provides a framework for critical success factors that, explains sixty-one percent of variability of success for projects. Areas which should be given special attention include making sure that the Business Intelligence solution is built with the end users in mind, that the Business Intelligence solution is closely tied to the company’s strategic vision and that the project is properly scoped and prioritized to concentrate on the best opportunities first.
