Effect of B4C on bending strength of ZTA ceramic reinforced high chromium cast iron matrix composites

15 wt% Cr sintered High Chromium Cast Iron (HCCI) with full density was successfully prepared by Super-solidus Liquid Phase Sintering (SPLS) technique, with water atomized 15 wt% Cr high chromium cast iron powder as initial materials. Its densification behavior and microstructure evolution in SPLS process and mechanical properties were investigated systematically. Additionally, the impact abrasive wear resistance under different impact energies were also analyzed and compared with another sintered HCCI with 20 wt% Cr. The results indicated that sintering temperature has a strong influence on the sintered alloy’s density, hardness, impact toughness and bending strength. The M7C3 type (M is Cr and Fe) carbides were obviously coarsened as temperature increased and their rod-shaped branches were fully developed at the same time, thereby resulting in carbide network formation in the matrix. The reasonable sintering temperature range was 1195–1205 °C, and the optimum mechanical properties had the hardness of 63.9 HRC, bending strength of 2112.65 MPa and impact toughness of 7.92 J/cm2. What is more important impact abrasive wear test results indicated 15 wt% Cr sintered HCCI’s wear resistance could be comparable to 20 wt% Cr sintered HCCI under impact energy 1~3 J/cm2, and it is more cost effective.

Abstract The paper presents results of Ti-addition to High Chromium Cast Iron (HCCI) on the structure and selected mechanical properties. For this study casted two sets of cylinders with dimensions ø20 mm, ø15 mm × 250 mm, for the High Chromium Cast Iron (HCCI) and with the 4% by mass Ti-addition. Melts were performed in the induction furnace crucible capacity of 15 kg. During the heats the cup with installed S type thermocouple was poured to record the cooling curves. The cylinders were subjected to the static bending strength test. Samples for the test microstructure and Rockwell hardness were cut from the cylinders. The study shows that the addition of titanium had an impact on the structure and thus the properties of High Chromium Cast Iron (HCCI). In subsequent studies, through an appropriate choice of chemical composition and proper process control, it is planned to obtain in the structure the titanium carbides TiC and chromium carbides with type (Cr, Fe)7C3.

The components in slurry pump suffer serious corrosion and abrasion in the phosphorus fertilizer manufacturing process because they undergo corrosion of H3PO4 medium and impact of particles at the same time. Presently, High chromium cast irons are often used to produce the components in slurry pump. In order to reveal the corrosive law, the corrosion properties of high chromium cast iron with 26wt.%Cr content (Cr26) were tested under different H3PO4 medium concentration conditions. Using back-propagation (BP) neural network, the non-linear relationship between the corrosion weight losses (W) and H3PO4 concentration, corrosion time (C, t) is established on the base of the dealing with experimental data. The results show that the well-trained BP neural network can predict the wear weight loss precisely according to H3PO4 concentration and corrosion time. The prediction results reveal that corrosion weight loss rises linearly with increasing corrosion time. The H3PO4 concentration has obvious effect on corrosion property. When H3PO4 concentration is lower than about 0.5mol/L, high chromium cast iron has well resistance to H3PO4 corrosion. However, the corrosion resistance of high chromium cast iron rapidly decreases when the H3PO4 concentration exceed about 0.8 mol/L. It is suggest the high chromium cast iron be used under the condition of H3PO4 concentration of lower 0.8 mol/L.
