I. While so much improvement has recently taken place in the arrangement and construction of various tables for facilitating calculations founded on existing data, very little has been done in the way of investigating and correcting the data themselves; and it is feared that the question of the rate of mortality among select lives is still involved in the greatest doubt and obscurity.II. It is not proposed in the present paper to go farther than to show that the rate of mortality, during the first year of selection, of select assured lives is so materially different from what it has hitherto been represented, as to lead to the inference that the data from which the erroneous deduction has been made cannot be true data for the ascertainment of the value of selection. To investigate the rate of mortality of select lives at separate ages, I conceive to be of the utmost importance for the elucidation of truth, and the proper direction of sanatory inquiries; but I do not consider that sufficient data at present exist for the determination of this, and these can only be obtained by a united inquiry. I shall be very happy if the present observations have any effect in hastening such an investigation, which sooner or later must be entered upon.

Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 39(4): 268-272. https://doi.org/10.22268/AJPP-39.4.268272 A weekly adults collection of Capnodis tendebrionis L. (Buprestidae; Coleoptera) was conducted for two seasons (2018, 2019) to determine the maximum insect adults appearance period. Early adult appearance was recorded in the first year in warm-dry months as compared to the second year in cold-wet months. Maximum insect adults appearance was recorded at the end of April during the first season and at the end of May in the second season. A field experiment was carried out to test the efficacy of some pesticides on controlling pest adults: Deltamethrin, 100g/l, Chlorpyriphos-ethyl 48% and Acetamiprid 20% as a foliar spray, and Deltamethrin 0.25% as dusting powder around the stem, in addition to the control. Results obtained showed that Chlorpyriphos-ethyl and the two Deltamethrin treatments were the best on adults and with significant differences compared with Acetamiprid treatment following the first and the second week after spraying in 2018, and the Deltamethrin as dusting powder and Chlorpyriphos-ethyl treatments were the best and with significant differences compared to other treatments were observed. Using Deltamethrin as dusting powder around the stem was highly efficient during three weeks after spraying as compared with other treatments in the two years. The mineralization coefficient (M.C.) (the amount of nitrate nitrogen formed in one season in sift, by bare fallowing the soil, as a percentage of the amount of organic nitrogen in the topsoil at the onset of the season) was measured on two soils at Katherine, N.T. The determination of M.C. is regarded as useful in evaluating the 'true' decomposition constant of a soil under annual cropping conditions. Its relation to the 'apparent' decomposition constant is discussed. Tippera clay loam had a mean M.C. of 4.80 per cent, and the fluctuations around the mean were positively related to amount of rainfall. The M.C. for Blain sand dropped from 12.5 per cent in the first year of cultivation to 5.0 per cent in the third and fourth years. The data indicate that the initial high nitrogen yields on the sandy soil will in time decline to a low level unless a legume crop is incorporated in the cropping system.

ABSTRACT Cross-correlation analysis of the thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (tSZ) effect and weak gravitational lensing (WL) provides a powerful probe of cosmology and astrophysics of the intracluster medium. We present the measurement of the cross-correlation of tSZ and WL from Planck and Subaru Hyper-Suprime Cam. The combination enables us to study cluster astrophysics at high redshift. We use the tSZ-WL cross-correlation and the tSZ autopower spectrum measurements to place a tight constraint on the hydrostatic mass bias, which is a measure of the degree of non-thermal pressure support in galaxy clusters. With the prior on cosmological parameters derived from the analysis of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies by Planck and taking into account foreground contributions both in the tSZ autopower spectrum and the tSZ-WL cross-correlation, the hydrostatic mass bias is estimated to be $26.9^{+8.9}_{-4.4} {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ ($68{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ CL), which is consistent with recent measurements by mass calibration techniques.

We reconstruct the shape of the primordial power spectrum from the latest cosmic microwave background data, including the new results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), and large scale structure data from the two degree field galaxy redshift survey (2dFGRS). We discuss two parameterizations taking into account the uncertainties in four cosmological parameters. First we parameterize the initial spectrum by a tilt and a running spectral index, finding marginal evidence for a running spectral index only if the first three WMAP multipoles (ℓ = 2, 3, 4) are included in the analysis. Secondly, to investigate further the low CMB large scale power, we modify the conventional power-law spectrum by introducing a scale above which there is no power. We find a preferred position of the cut at kc ∼ 3 × 10--4 Mpc--1 although kc = 0 (no cut) is not ruled out.

In a first part, the present status of the HIPPARCOS mission is described. Despite the degradations and failures of gyroscopes, it is still hoped that a 4 1/2 mission duration will be reached. The first-year of data has been reduced by both FAST and NDAC consortia. For the best 46200 observed stars, the distribution of standard errors in positions has a maximum of 1.5 mas in latitude and 1.8 mas in longitude and the mean standard error for parallaxes is of the order of 3 mas. The comparison of results obtained by both consortia shows that the differences are small and quite consistent with the announced internal precisions. Magnitude measurements are precise to 0.02 magnitude for a 4 second observation. The precision to be expected for double star observations is also given. The main new result is that the magnitudes of the components are obtained with a few hundredths of a magnitude precision. This allows to devise a new method of mass determination based upon the parallax and a recalibrated mass-luminosity diagram. The parallax dependence of the results is much more favourable than in the case of the classical determination of masses using orbital motions.
