AbstractDigital Twin (DT) technology is an essential technology related to the Industry 4.0. In engineering education, it is important that the curricula are kept up-to-date. By adopting new digital technologies, such as DT, we can provide new knowledge for students, teachers, and companies. The main aim of this research was to create a course concept to research benefits and barriers of DT technology in engineering education. The research confirmed earlier findings concerning digitalization in engineering education. DT technology can increase motivation for studying and improve learning when applied correctly.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) adoption in the manufacturing industry is on the rise across the world, resulting in increased empirical research on barriers and drivers to I4.0 adoption in specific country contexts. However, no similar studies are available that focus on the South African manufacturing industry. Our small-scale interview-based qualitative descriptive study aimed at identifying factors that may inhibit sustainable adoption of I4.0 in the country’s manufacturing industry. The study probed the views and opinions of 16 managers and specialists in the industry, as well as others in supportive roles. Two themes emerged from the thematic analysis: factors that inhibit sustainable adoption of I4.0 and strategies that promote I4.0 adoption in the South African manufacturing industry. The interviews highlighted cultural construct, structural inequalities, noticeable youth unemployment, fragmented task environment, and deficiencies in the education system as key inhibitors. Key strategies identified to promote sustainable adoption of I4.0 include understanding context and applying relevant technologies, strengthening policy and regulatory space, overhauling the education system, and focusing on primary manufacturing. The study offers direction for broader investigations of the specific inhibitors to sustainable I4.0 adoption in the sub-Saharan African developing countries and the strategies for overcoming them.

Digital disruption brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies has a major impact on cultures, strategies, structures, and processes of organizations. This change also requires a shift in leadership mindset to respond to opportunities, challenges, and dilemmas in the implementation of Industry 4.0 (I4.0). Moreover, effective leadership in the digital age requires developing a wide variety of core components of leadership. Therefore, improving the essential characteristics, capabilities, and skills of leaders plays a pivotal role in accelerating the path to success in the I4.0. In this regard, this chapter provides an in-depth discussion on leadership aspects of I4.0. The purpose of this chapter is to first present emerging leadership styles in I4.0. The chapter also explores what leadership roles have become more relevant in the age of I4.0 and what kind of fundamental leadership skills they need to possess in order to succeed.

This research work-in-progress deals with a holistic analysis of the impacts of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) for engineering education especially for University undergraduate (level 4-6), master (level 7) and PhD related manufacturing, automotive engineering and supply chain management programmes in United Kingdom higher education institutions. This analysis aims at providing support for further consolidated recommendations to enable the development of higher education engineering curriculum for enhancing I4.0 application for smart organisations and industrial companies within the digital supply chains. Also the paper provides an analysis of advancement from digitalisation in engineering education to the implementation of Education 4.0 and related practices of smart labs, and simulation of smart factories leading at the learning factory. A conceptual framework to support the application of big data and learning analytics in the School of Engineering from University of Wales Trinity St David, Swansea, United Kingdom has been identified, discussed and intended to apply in the context of applying learning analytics.
