AbstractA model for thermal ignition by intense light is studied. The governing non-linear parabolic equation is linearized in a two-step manner with the aid of a non-linear ordinary differential equation which captures the salient features of the non-linear parabolic equation. The critical parameters are computed from the steady-state solution of the ordinary differential equation, which can be obtained without actually solving the equation. Comparison with available data shows that the present method yields good results.

The differences of empirical formulas of China, the United States, Japan, and Europe for estimating the fundamental periods of frame structures are investigated. Summing up paradigms of the empirical formulas from the above representation countries, the paradigm formulas expressed as single-variable exponential type, single-variable linear type, and multi-variable non-linear type. Using statistical data of 36 groups of the measured fundamental period for least-squares regression analysis, and the effect of fitting regression formula is judged by the norm of relative error ‖δ‖2, the norm of root mean square error ‖RMSE‖2, the norm of residual mass‖CRM‖2. The results show that: the single-variable exponential type has wide application and gets closer with measured fundamental period; the single-variable linear type is brief, and the single-variable based on structural height has a smaller error with measured fundamental period, the single-variable based on the stories of structures has a larger error with measured fundamental period; the multi-variable non-linear type is very complex and larger error compared with the measured fundamental period. Considering the formula in the form of simple, practical and consistent with the codes, this paper gives single-variable exponential type as recommended empirical formula for estimating the fundamental periods of frame structures .The proposed empirical formula can serve as a reference for revision of the seismic design code, frame structure seismic design and related studies.

Sending power with good quality is the main objective of electrical transmission system. The load nature, in particular non-linear loads, makes the current at the point of common coupling (PCC) to include harmonics which further affects the other loads connected at PCC. Power quality improvement and management is an important study for the enhancement of electrical transmission and distribution systems to enrich the quality of power delivered at the utilization point. DSTATCOM is one among the FACTS controllers to improve the power quality by nullifying the effect of harmonics at PCC. This paper presents the analysis of dual DSTATCOM topology. In this each DSTATCOM is burdened such that the total compensating currents is shared between the two. Dual STATCOM topology is tested and the result analysis is shown with varying non-linear type loading conditions. Dual DSTATCOM is controlled using Instantaneous Reactive Power theory control logic. Parallel DSTATCOM has the advantage of reduction of switch rating and switching losses. The simulation work is carried out using Matlab/Simulink software

This paper deals with the elimination of harmonics at PCC in the presence of non-linear type of loads. Introduction of five-level DSTATCOM at PCC injects compensating currents for the minimization of harmonic content in the source currents. Non-linear loads when connected to the system draw non-linear components of current leaving undesired harmonics at the source side. DSTATCOM when connected to the system at the coupling point induces compensating currents to nullify harmonics. This paper introduces the simulation modelling of five-level DSTATCOM for harmonic elimination. Matlab/Simulink modelling was done for the system without DSTATCOM and its harmonic contents were shown. The system without DSTATCOM is compared with the system with the presence of DSTATCOM showing their respective THD in the source current. Five level DSTATCOM was validated by considering fixed load and variable load. Simulation work was carried out for three types of systems and results were obtained using Matlab/Simulink.
