A side-entry differentially pumped environmental chamber (SEDPEC) has been designed and constructed for the AEI-EM7 high-voltage electron microscope (HVEM). The SEDPEC has been tested in the same way as previous chambers for the HVEM. In contrast to the lengthy procedures necessary to install previous environmental chambers in the HVEM, the SEDPEC can be installed in about one half hour. Thus a user can install the SEDPEC, use it for a day and return the HVEM to normal operating status without causing delays for other HVEM users. This is particularly important for our facility, which is supported as a national biotechnology resource by the NIH.

The Fock test is widely used for assessing the reactivity of dissolving pulp. The objective of this study was to modify the method to improve the repeatability of the test. Various parameters that affect the repeatability of the Fock test were investigated. The results showed that Fock reactivity is dependent on testing conditions affecting the xanthation between cellulose and carbon disulfide, such as the moisture content of the pulp sample, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, xanthation temperature, carbon disulfide dosage, and xanthation time. The repeatability of the test was significantly improved using the following modified testing procedure: air dried sample in the constant temperature/humidity room, xanthation temperature of 66°F (19°C) in a water bath, xanthation time of 3 h, NaOH concentration of 9% (w/w), and 1.3 mL carbon disulfide.

Commercially available anhydrous KF without activation or solid support promotes condensation between active methylene compounds, carbon disulfide and an alkylating agent in dry DMF to allow the preparation of a variety of ketene dithioacetals in fair to good yields under ambient conditions.
