Abstract The availability of public open spaces in urban areas is very urgent at this time, especially considering the need for public open spaces that can be used by urban communities, both as social areas and sports recreation. The existing condition along the canal edge requires improving the visual quality so that it can be used as a public open space. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the riverbank, as well as increasing the visual appeal to form public open spaces without reducing the ecological quality of the land and waters of the canal. The analysis method uses scenic beauty estimation, semantic, differential to assess the visual quality at 10 capture points of the coastal riverbank landscape and those with a value less than - 20 have a low or poor visual quality value. In general, the riverbank has a moderate visual quality value because it has not been used properly. The final result of this research activity is as a reference for improving the visual quality of Banjir Kanal Timur, thus creating a Public Open Space according to standart, safe, comfortable regulation for social interaction, sports recreation, education and concern for the ecological and hydrological aspects of the city.

Abstract: Public open spaces are spaces that can be accessed for free and can accommodate a variety of peoples and activities. Therefore, both if in each residential area or at a certain radius there is at least one public open space, no exception in urban villages with a characteristic population density that has become the root of settlement culture in Indonesia. This research then took a case study in one of the villages in the city of Yogyakarta, namely Kampung Gampingan, which despite entering into a slum arrangement according to Mayor Decree Number 216 Year 2016, but still has one existing public open space that still exists utilized by residents around every day, both by children until adults. Related to these findings, this study was conducted as a basic study whose results can be used as a foundation for the arrangement of slums in the future. In its design, public open space must also pay attention to the times and various aspects and needs for the convenience of its users. Although comfort is very difficult to define, at least comfort can be assessed through people's preferences through the responsiveness of each individual. For this reason, through a qualitative-exploratory method using a questionnaire filled out by users of public open spaces in Kampung Gampingan, this study aims to find citizens' preferences for aspects of the comfort of public open spaces based on comfort theory; what matters that must be prioritized or must be avoided in the design for the creation of the convenience of citizens. From this study it was found that in order to achieve the comfort of a public open space, aspects of governance needed include cleanliness, safety, circulation, shape / dimension, noise, lighting, smell, natural/ climate power, and supporting facilities such as the free internet access, parks, CCTV, drink water, trash cans, streetlights, children's games, and furniture.

<p>Public open spaces are essential for residents’ social interactions and recreational activities, improving wellbeing as well as offering economic and environmental benefits. Saudi Arabia is aiming to enhance the quality of life in all its cities through different national programs and projects. One of the key performance indicators is increasing public open space per capita from 3.47 m2 to 3.9 m2 by 2020. This study measured the current public open space per inhabitant in Jeddah by using a geographic information system to identify the types of public open spaces that make up the per capita value in the city. Jeddah is located in a rapidly developing country, and it is a re-planned city where the current status of public open spaces falls short of users’ expectations and does not meet international standards. This study suggests that the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and municipalities should adopt a systematic approach to tackling the spatial distribution of open spaces in Saudi cities. In addition, there is a need for the proactive involvement of planners, landscape architects and designers in the planning process.</p>

In general, the presence of green open space as one element in the urban spatial is very weak and the potencial is reduced portion because they do not have a high economic value. One function of green open space is for micro-climate amelioration, making green open space as a lugs of the city for helping the formation of a cool and comfortable climate in the vicinity. This comfort is determined by the interdependence between the factors of air temperature, air humidity, light and wind movement. Vegetation can improve the quality of the local climate or reducing temperature named micro-climate amelioration function as well. This study aimed to evaluate and redesign the typology of green open space to create green resolution with conversion of carbon to compansate for changes in the landscape that occur as a result of ongoing development. The study was conducted in urban areas of West Papua Province with five cases were selected purposively. Refers to the Ministry of Public Work No. 5 of 2008 and some related references, the results of research (qualitative exploration research) showed that 3 of the 5 cases have not met the ideal typology of Green Open Spaces, while two other cases have met the ideal typology for ecological function, but remain in need of the final material. Redesigns of Green Open Spaces that has been generated from this study are expected to restore ecological functions with holding the ecologycal aspect as a priority matter to consider as well. Therefor those can be used by local goverments for planning repairs or improvements in the future.

The objective of this study is to examine contribution of accessibility in creating conviviality at a public open space. In literature, conviviality is discussed as the subjective quality of public spaces, but its quantification is not adequately discussed. Conviviality means, being happy in the company of others. From different studies, it was found that there are physical aspects of built environment which can influence conviviality. Legibility, network integration and walkability in built environment can increase accessibility which can contribute in conviviality of a public open spaces. The methodology of this work is based on comparison between perceptual conviviality with physical parameters of accessibility in public open spaces. With the help of experts, weights are derived through Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for perceptual conviviality parameters and physical accessibility attributes. Based on this work, it was empirically validated that accessibility plays important role in conviviality at a public open space.

Public open space (POS) in Ankara reflects both the negative and positive aspects of urban change. Evolving public space development strategies in Ankara played a fundamental role in the protection, promotion, and enhancement of POS from 1923 to 2017. This study shows that while the POS development of the city was addressed as an integrative and comprehensive structure in the entire city by the Lörcher (1924–1925) and Jansen (1932) plans, the subsequent approaches to POS were more superficial, piecemeal, and simplistic.

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong></strong></p><p>The quality of public outdoor space has recently become an important issue and has been revealed by many studies. However, there are few studies that show the relationship between the quality of space and the social interaction that occurs between people. The most important goal of urban designers should be to create public open spaces that can meet the various needs of people. Using longer and more frequently, public open spaces allow the fulfilment of needs and also support social interaction.  In this context, the concept of 'quality' of public open spaces is gaining importance. The quality of open spaces revealed by different characteristics of the environment has been determined by evaluating of the open spaces by their inclusiveness, meaningful activities, comfort, security and pleasurability and revealed the relationship between social interaction (passive-fleeting-enduring relationship). In order to determine this relationship, a questionnaire was conducted with 140 people (70 people in each park) in Atatürk Square Park and Fatih Park in Trabzon. As a result, a high level of relationship was found between the factors of inclusiveness, comfort and meaningful activities that determine the quality of space and social interaction.</p><p><strong>Öz </strong></p><p>Kamusal açık mekânın kalitesi son zamanlarda üzerinde önemle durulan bir konu haline gelmiş ve birçok çalışma tarafından ortaya konmuştur.

Public open spaces services have been shown to be profoundly affected by rapid urbanization and environmental changes, and in turn, they have influenced socio-cultural relationships and human well-being. However, the impact of these changes on public open space services (POSS) remains unexplored, particularly in the Saudi Arabian context. This study examines the socio-cultural influence of POSS on the King Abdulaziz University campus, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and the impact of these services on well-being. A field survey and questionnaire were used to collect data. Non-parametric tests (Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests) were used to find significant differences in the importance of POSS as perceived by stakeholders based on socio-demographic attributes. Factor analysis was performed for 14 POSS to identify those that are most important. The study showed that (i) university stakeholders are closely linked to services provided by public open spaces (POS) and dependent on POSS, (ii) there were significant differences in the perceived importance of POSS according to gender, age, and social groups, and (iii) 70 to 90% of stakeholders reported POSS as having a positive impact on well-being. Thus, the findings will help design and plan POSS to meet the needs of society and promote well-being.
