Plato on the Grades of Perception: Theaetetus 184–186 and the Phaedo

This chapter asks how the Phaedo conceives of perception, both in its own right and as compared to Theaetetus 184–6. The chapter argues that, though the Phaedo agrees with Theaetetus 184–6 at an abstract level insofar as both dialogues argue that perception is not knowledge, they give different reasons. The task in Theaetetus 184–6 is to provide a precise account of the nature of perception and what it can achieve. The primary task in the Phaedo (so far as the passages that discuss perception are concerned) is to defend the view that we can’t acquire knowledge of forms if we rely on perception or perception-guided inquiry; rather, we need to reason in a way that is, in the right way and to the relevant extent, independent of both of them. Further, though Theaetetus 184–6 takes perception to be non-propositional, the Phaedo is neutral on this issue.

Purpose – Capabilities are a widely researched subject, but capability development techniques have received considerably less attention. Capability development is a long-term activity, where both how to choose “the right capabilities” and how to develop “the capabilities right” are important. The purpose of this paper is to approach to pick up the most widespread capabilities and development techniques in project-companies, and observes their shift of focus when moving from one lifecycle stage to another. Design/methodology/approach – A long-scale survey was chosen and carried out in EU member state Estonia in 2011, resulting with close to a couple of 100 responses. Findings – The quality of most business capabilities decreases in reaching the decline stage of the lifecycle, but project-related capabilities are improving. The same cannot be concluded for project-led capability development techniques, as they decline, and the quality of traditional and business-led capability techniques are improving. The use of development techniques changes less throughout lifecycle stages than capabilities do – it is not so important how companies develop capabilities, capabilities themselves matter. Research limitations/implications – Survey was performed in a small country which limits the generalizability to larger countries. Practical implications – Capabilities and their development techniques are very much practice-oriented, especially development techniques. However, research indicates that it is more important to choose the right capabilities and worry less about their development-specific issues. Originality/value – Results provide lifecycle-specific information which capabilities and their development techniques prevail at what stage of companies’ lifecycle. Thus far, learning, as the most important technique, has received the most attention, other techniques less – this research gives further information about a wider array of the techniques. Furthermore, the prior research was concentrated on a few specific capabilities or capabilities at an abstract level, this research focuses on a comprehensive set of capabilities.

AbstractGuarantee of the ship safety is the primary task posed for modern navigation systems. This concerns monitoring the proper ship position as well as providing accurate information about the collision threat. The proper interpretation of this information belongs to the navigator. He must take into account many variables affecting the assessment of the situation and then make the right decision regarding anti-collision manoeuvres. This assessment could be made easier for him with use some form of graphic target data presentation methods other than currently required and described in IMO performance standards. Other possible graphic presentation methods of collision information are described in the article along with the concept of their usage.

Everything is so abstract that will certainly lead to different conclusions and perceptions could even lead to a false perception of the message being delivered. That is why the implementation of the guidance and counseling should use the media to bear on guidance and counseling is effective. It is inevitable that the tools or media is required by anyone, let alone for an extension whose primary task is always interacting with others. Thus the extension should use the media in the process of counseling. Media will be able to help the educator to convey the message that the abstract to be real, can membankitkan individual spirit and can easily arouse the consciousness of the individual. Before using an extension media should be able to choose and use the right media with activities of counseling in order to run effectively and efficiently.

This study examines dual-task performance in the tactile modality and tests whether dual-task cost depends on task type. Experiment 1 involved competing tasks of the same type, using a primary localisation task on the left hand and a secondary localisation task on the right hand. In Experiment 2, the primary task on the left hand remained the same, while an intensity discrimination task was used as the secondary task on the right hand. Subjects in both experiments completed three conditions: the primary task alone, a dual-task condition, and the primary task with the secondary stimulus present but no response required. Across both experiments, performance on the primary task was best when it was presented alone, and there was a performance decrement when the secondary stimulus was present but not responded to. Performance on the primary task was further decreased when participants had to respond to the secondary stimulus, and the decrease was larger when the secondary task was localisation rather than discrimination. This result indicates that task type in the tactile modality may modulate the attentional cost of dual-task performance and implies partially shared resources underlie localisation and intensity discrimination.

The learning method is one of the essential factors that influence the success of learning. To build good quality learning, choosing the right method is a crucial step. This study aims to identify differences in student learning achievement by applying two learning methods, project-based learning (PjBL) and guided inquiry (GI) in rectilinear motion and circular motion. The quasi-experimental method was used in this study. The participants were selected by cluster random sampling consisting of two classes (36 students and 35 students) from one of the Vocational Schools in Surakarta. Data collected through multiple-choice tests and interviews were analyzed in descriptive and inferential statistics using ANOVA and t-test. The results show that there is an influence of the learning method on student learning achievement in which both the PjBL and GI method. Students who learned rectilinear motion and circular motion using PjBL got higher scores than the GI method. The implication of this research is as a teacher's reference in choosing learning methods relevant to the rectilinear motion and circular motion and its implementation is expected to improve student learning achievement.

SummaryRecently, there has been a proliferation of international agreements imposing minimum standards on states in respect of their treatment of foreign investors and allowing investors to initiate dispute settlement proceedings where a state violates these standards. Of greatest significance to Canada is Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which provides both standards for state behaviour and the right to initiate binding arbitration. Since 1996, four cases have been brought under Chapter 11. This note describes the Chapter 11 process and suggests some of the issues that may arise as it is increasingly resorted to by investors.

Abstract The target article carefully describes the memory system, centered on the temporal lobe that builds specific memory traces. It does not, however, mention the laterality effects that exist within this system. This commentary briefly surveys evidence showing that clear asymmetries exist within the temporal lobe structures subserving the core system and that the right temporal structures mainly underpin face familiarity feelings.

It is well known that for reflections corresponding to large interplanar spacings (i.e., sin θ/λ small), the electron scattering amplitude, f, is sensitive to the ionicity and to the charge distribution around the atoms. We have used this in order to obtain information about the charge distribution in FeTi, which is a candidate for storage of hydrogen. Our goal is to study the changes in electron distribution in the presence of hydrogen, and also the ionicity of hydrogen in metals, but so far our study has been limited to pure FeTi. FeTi has the CsCl structure and thus Fe and Ti scatter with a phase difference of π into the 100-ref lections. Because Fe (Z = 26) is higher in the periodic system than Ti (Z = 22), an immediate “guess” would be that Fe has a larger scattering amplitude than Ti. However, relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations show that the opposite is the case for the 100-reflection. An explanation for this may be sought in the stronger localization of the d-electrons of the first row transition elements when moving to the right in the periodic table. The tabulated difference between fTi (100) and ffe (100) is small, however, and based on the values of the scattering amplitude for isolated atoms, the kinematical intensity of the 100-reflection is only 5.10-4 of the intensity of the 200-reflection.
