Two novel, Gram-stain-variable, moderately thermophilic, acidophilic, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacteria, G45-16T and G45-17, were isolated from acid mine water of Zijin copper mine in Fujian Province, China. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that they were closely related to Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris ATCC 49025T with sequence similarities of 96.8 %. Cells grew aerobically at 20–45 °C (optimum, 40 °C), at pH 2.5–5.5 (optimum, pH 3.5) and in the presence of 0–4.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Strains contained MK-7 as the major menaquinone and the major cellular fatty acids were ω-cyclohexane C19 : 0 and ω-cyclohexane C17 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 51.3 and 49.8 mol% (T m) for G45-16T and G45-17, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic comparisons with their relatives and DNA–DNA relatedness values, it is concluded that strains G45-16T and G45-17 represent a novel species within the genus Alicyclobacillus, for which the name Alicyclobacillus fodiniaquatilis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is G45-16T ( = CGMCC 1.15049T = NBRC 111483T).

A Gram-stain-positive, oxidase- and catalase-negative, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, DCY75T, was isolated from a queen wasp (Vespula vulgaris). Growth occurred at 4–37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 3.5–8.0 (optimum, pH 5.0–6.0) and with ≤ 7.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain DCY75T produced gas during growth on glucose. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain DCY75T belonged to the genus Lactobacillus and was closely related to Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis ATCC 27651T and Lactobacillus lindneri DSM 20690T at sequence similarities of 96.7 and 96.4 %, respectively. A comparison of two housekeeping genes, pheS and rpoA, revealed that strain DCT75T was well separated from other species of the genus Lactobacillus. Strain DCY75T produced d- and l-lactic acid isomers in a ratio of 22.5 : 77.5 (v/v). The major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (comprising C18 :  1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and C18 : 0.The peptidoglycan structure was of the A4α (l-Lys–d-Asp) type. Cell-wall sugars were glucose, galactose and ribose. The DNA G+C content was 35.5 ± 1.3 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic properties, strain DCY75T represents a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus vespulae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY75T ( = KCTC 21023T = JCM 19742T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterium (FJAT-14571T) was isolated from a soil sample in Taiwan. Strain FJAT-14571T grew at 20–40 °C (optimum 35 °C), pH 6–10 (optimum pH 8) and 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain FJAT-14571T was a member of the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis DSM 24771T (96.2 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FJAT-14571T and B. oceanisediminis DSM 24771T was low (32.0 % ± 0.88 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan of strain FJAT-14571T was meso-diaminopimelic acid and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7 (96.6 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (46.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (7.6 %), iso-C17 : 0 (8.2 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (10.0 %) and the DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicated that strain FJAT-14571T represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-14571T ( = DSM 27845T = CGMCC1.1 2698T).

A Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated PR1012KT, was isolated from a motor car evaporator core collected in Korea. Cells of the strain were facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped. The strain grew at 10–40 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 6.5–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–8.0) and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetically, the strain was closely related to members of the genus Spirosoma (97.50–90.74 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities) and showed highest sequence similarity to Spirosoma panaciterrae DSM 21099T (97.50 %). Its predominant fatty acids included summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), C16 : 1ω5c, iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1 I and/or anteiso B) and it had MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The polar lipids present included phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown aminophospholipid, two unknown aminolipids and five unknown polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of this strain was 54 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain PR1012KT represents a novel species in the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma aerolatum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PR1012KT ( = KACC 17939T = NBRC 110794T).

Strain 15-4T, a Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterial strain that produced flexirubin-type pigments, was isolated from Tibet Province, China, and characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Chitinophagaceae, phylum ‘Bacteroidetes’, and was related to members of the genus Niabella, with sequence similarities ranging from 94.1 to 96.4 %. Strain 15-4T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and its DNA G+C content was 46.9 mol%. The major fatty acids of strain 15-4T were iso-C15 : 0 (41.3 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (14.9 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (13.2 %) and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, 16.0 %). These chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain 15-4T to the genus Niabella. However, a number of physiological and biochemical features enabled the isolate to be differentiated phenotypically from recognized species of the genus Niabella. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is proposed that strain 15-4T represents a novel species, Niabella tibetensis sp. nov.; the type strain is 15-4T ( = CCTCC AB 209167T = NRRL B-59394T). On the basis of these data, an emended description of the genus Niabella is also proposed.

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile Brevundimonas-like bacterial strain, J22T, was isolated from black sand collected from Soesoggak, Jeju Island, Korea. Growth of strain J22T was observed in R2A medium at temperatures between 10 and 42 °C (optimum 30 °C), between pH 6.5 and 10.5 (optimum pH 7.5) and at a NaCl concentration between 0 and 4 % (w/v) (optimum 0–1 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain J22T belonged to the genus Brevundimonas, with high sequence similarities of >97 % to the sequence of the type strains Brevundimonas alba CB88T, Brevundimonas lenta DS-18T, Brevundimonas variabilis CB17T, Mycoplana bullata TK0051T, Brevundimonas kwangchunensis KSL-102T, Brevundimonas intermedia CB63T, Brevundimonas subvibrioides CB81T and Brevundimonas bacteroides CB7T. Strain J22T exhibited DNA–DNA relatedness values of less than 22.2 % with the phylogenetically related species of the genus Brevundimonas. The DNA G+C content of strain J22T was 66.3 mol%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω9c; C12 : 0 3-OH was present, which chemotaxonomically characterizes the members of the genus Brevundimonas. Phylogenetic, genomic and biochemical characteristics served to differentiate this isolate from recognized members of the genus Brevundimonas. Strain J22T (=KCTC 22177T=JCM 15911T) should be classified as a novel species in the genus Brevundimonas, for which the name Brevundimonas basaltis sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain KIS83-12T, was isolated from soil of Gaui island in the Taean region of South Korea. The strain grew at 15–33 °C (optimum, 28 °C), at pH 5.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). Growth did not occur in the presence of NaCl. The strain was catalase-negative and oxidase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that KIS83-12T was most closely related to Solimonas soli DCY12T (96.9 %), Solimonas variicoloris MN28T (96.5 %), Solimonas flava CW-KD 4T (96.5 %) and Solimonas aquatica NAA16T (96.0 %), and formed a robust phyletic lineage with members of the genus Solimonas . The main isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. Major polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. Fatty acids present in large and moderate amounts (>5.0 %) were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c, summed feature 2 (iso-C16 : 1 I and/or C14 : 0 3-OH) and C12 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 67.9 mol%. On the basis of the taxonomic data obtained in this study, KIS83-12T represents a novel species of the genus Solimonas , for which the name Solimonas terrae sp. nov. is proposed, with KIS83-12T ( = KACC 16967T = DSM 27281T) as the type strain.

Bacterial strain V2M44T was isolated from forest soil from the Changbai Mountains, Heilongjiang Province, China. Cells of strain V2M44T were Gram-negative, rod-shaped and 0.3–0.4 μm in diameter and 1.5–2.5 μm long. The cells were strictly aerobic and were motile by means of peritrichous flagella. Growth occurred at 20–33 °C (optimum, 29–31 °C), at pH 5–8 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0) and in the presence of 0−0.1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.05 %). Strain V2M44T contained C17 : 1 ω6c (38.9 %) and summed feature 7 (comprising C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9t and/or C18 : 1 ω12t, 31.5 %) as the major cellular fatty acids and Q-10 as the major respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol along with two unidentified phospholipids and four unidentified glycolipids. The major component in the polyamine pattern was sym-homospermidine. The DNA G+C content was 65.8 mol%. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain V2M44T was phylogenetically related to members of the genus Sphingomonas, with sequence similarities ranging from 92.0–95.8 %. Based on these results, it is concluded that strain V2M44T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas changbaiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is V2M44T (=CGMCC 1.7057T=NBRC 104936T).

Two novel, Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, halotolerent bacteria, strains JG 03T and JG 05 were isolated from the rhizosphere of Salicornia brachiata, an extreme halophyte. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that they were closely related to members of the genus Zhihengliuella, with sequence similarities of 96.9–99.1 %. The sequence similarity of strains JG 03T and JG 05 with each other was 99.4 %. DNA–DNA hybridization of JG 03T and JG 05 with other species of the genus Zhihengliuella with validly published names showed reassociation values of 19.8 %–53.4 % and a value of 91.4 % between each other. The peptidoglycan type of both strains was A4α and MK-9 and MK-10 were the predominant menaquinones. The predominant fatty acid in JG 03T was anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. However, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 were the major fatty acids in strain JG 05. The DNA G+C content of strains JG 03T and JG 05 was 70.0 and 70.1 mol%, respectively. In nutrient broth medium both strains grew at NaCl concentrations of up to 15 % (w/v). On the basis of chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic analyses, strains JG 03T and JG 05 should be affiliated to the genus Zhihengliuella. Strains JG 03T and JG 05 represent a novel species of the genus Zhihengliuella for which the name Zhihengliuella somnathii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JG 03T ( = DSM 23187T = IMCC 253T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain, SSK2-2T, was isolated from the place where the ocean and a freshwater spring meet at Jeju island, South Korea. Strain SSK2-2T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SSK2-2T fell within the clade comprising the type strains of species of the genus Maribacter, joining the type strain of Maribacter sedimenticola with which it shared 99.4 % similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of other Maribacter species were 94.6–98.2 %. Strain SSK2-2T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0) as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain SSK2-2T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain SSK2-2T was 38.2 mol% and mean levels of DNA–DNA relatedness with the type strains of four phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 11–24 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain SSK2-2T is separate from other Maribacter species. On the basis of the data presented, strain SSK2-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter confluentis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SSK2-2T ( = KCTC 42604T = CECT 8869T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain HLT3-15T) was isolated from the ice tongue surface of the Hailuogou glacier in Szechwan Province, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, revealed that strain HLT3-15T belonged to the genus Nocardioides. The highest levels of sequence similarities were found with Nocardioides hwasunensis CGMCC 4.6881T and Nocardioides ganghwensis CGMCC 4.6875T (98.5 % and 98.3 %, respectively). However, DNA–DNA relatedness demonstrated that strain HLT3-15T was distinct from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. The major cellular fatty acids of strain HLT3-15T were C17 : 1ω8c and iso-C16 : 0. Strain HLT3-15T contained ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan and MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone. On the basis of a polyphasic approach, a novel species, Nocardioides glacieisoli sp. nov., is proposed with HLT3-15T ( = CGMCC 1.11097T = NBRC 109781T) as the type strain.
