Size effect on thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication of industrial chain bush-pin hinge pair

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) theory to study the variation of the equivalent curvature radius “R” on the change of oil film thickness, pressure, temperature rise and friction coefficient in the contact zone between bush-pin in industrial chain drive. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the contact between bush and pin is simplified as infinitely long line contact. The lubrication state is studied by numerical simulation using steady-state line contact thermal EHL. The two constitutive equations, namely, Newton fluid and Ree–Eyring fluid are used in the calculations. Findings It is found that with the increase of equivalent curvature radius, the thickness of oil film decreases and the temperature rise increases. Under the same condition, the friction coefficient of Newton fluid is higher than that of Ree–Eyring fluid. When the load increases, the oil film thickness decreases, the temperature rise increases and the friction coefficient decreases; and the film thickness increases with the increase of the entraining speed under the condition “R < 1,000 mm”. Research limitations/implications The infinite line contact assumption is only an approximation. For example, the distances between the two inner plates are 5.72 mm, by considering the two parts assembled into the inner plates, the total length of the bush is less than 6 mm. The diameter of the pin and the bore diameter of the bush are 3.28 and 3.33 mm. However, the infinite line contact is also helpful in understanding the general variation of oil film characteristics and provides a reference for the future study of finite line contact of chain problems. Originality/value The change of the equivalent radius R on the variation of the oil film in the contact of the bush and the pin in industrial chain drive was investigated. The size effect influences the lubrication characteristic greatly in the bush-pin pair.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to numerically study the variations of oil film pressure, thickness and temperature rise in the contact zone of plate-pin pair in silent chains. Design/methodology/approach A steady-state thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model is built using a Ree–Eyring fluid. The contact between the plate and the pin is simplified as a narrow finite line contact, and the lubrication state is examined by varying the geometry and the plate speed. Findings With increase in the equivalent radius of curvature, the pressure peak and the central film thickness increase. Because the plate is very thin, the temperature rise can be neglected. Even when the influence of the rounded corner region is less, a proper design can beneficially increase the minimum film thickness at both edges of the plate. Under a low entraining speed, strong stress concentration results in close-zero film thickness at both edges of the plate. Originality/value This study reveals the EHL feature of the narrow finite line contact in plate-pin pairs for silent chains and will support the future works considering transient effect, surface features and wear.

Purpose This paper aims to study the influence of three-column groove shell radius, ball radius, lubricating oil viscosity and elastic modulus on the thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) characteristics and optimisation of the ball-type tripod universal joint. Design/methodology/approach The point contact TEHL model of the joint was developed, and the multi-grid method was used to solve it. The influence of three-column groove shell radius, ball radius, lubricating oil viscosity and elastic modulus on the lubrication characteristics was analysed. Further, the optimisation of the joint TEHL performance was carried out by the Kriging approximation model combined with the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithm. Findings The research results show that increasing groove shell radius and ball radius can effectively increase the oil film thickness, and decrease the oil film pressure, as well as the temperature rise. Decreasing elastic modulus can reduce the oil film temperature rise and pressure, and increasing viscosity can effectively increase the oil film thickness. The optimised minimum oil film thickness increases by 33.23% and the optimised maximum oil film pressure and maximum temperature rise decrease by 11.92% and 28.87%, respectively. Furthermore, the relative error of each response output is less than 10%. Originality/value This study applies TEHL theory to the tribological research of the ball-type tripod universal joint, and the joint’s lubrication performance is improved greatly by the Kriging model and MOPSO algorithm, which provides an effective measure to raise the joint’s working efficiency.

Purpose This paper aims to study line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication properties of surface-textured rollers as well as the effect of different crown widths (dw) on oil film thickness under textured conditions. Design/methodology/approach The laser processing method was used to make the micro-texture on the surface of GCr15 steel rollers; lithium grease was used as the lubricant, and line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication experiments under pure sliding conditions were performed on light interference elastohydrodynamic-lubricated experimental table. Findings The results show that the line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication is closely related to the textured crown width of steel rollers. At low speeds and light loads, texturing has an inevitable inhibitory effect on the formation of the lubricating oil film, and the smaller the width of the crown area, the more obvious the inhibitory effect, which is not conducive to the improvement of the lubrication condition. At high speeds and high loads, the textured roller with dw = 1 mm has the largest oil film thickness and shows better lubrication performance. Originality/value At present, there is little research on the surface texture of line-contact friction pairs. This work explores the effect of different textured crown width on the lubricating properties of line-contact elastohydrodynamic grease lubrication by experiment. It provides a new theoretical basis for the subsequent practical application of surface texture technology.

Purpose This paper aims to study the influence of the dimension change of bush-pin on the pressure, oil film thickness, temperature rise and traction coefficient in contact zone by using a thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model for finite line contact. Concretely, the effects of the equivalent curvature radius of the bush and the pin, and the length of the bush are investigated. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the contact between the bush and pin is simplified as finite line contact. The lubrication state is studied by numerical simulation using steady-state line contact thermal EHL. A constitutive equation Ree–Eyring fluid is used in the calculations. Findings It is found that by selecting an optimal equivalent radius of curvature and prolonging the bush length can improve the lubrication state effectively. Originality/value Under specific working conditions, there exists an optimal equivalent radius to maximize the minimum oil film thickness in the contact zone. The increase of generatrix length will weaken the stress concentration effect in the rounded corner area at both ends of the bush, which can improve the wear resistance of chain. Stiffness properties of interfacial engineering surfaces are of great importance to the dynamic performance of relevant mechanical systems. Normal contact stiffness and oil film stiffness of line contact problems are studied in this work analytically and numerically. The Hertzian contact theory and the Yang–Sun method are applied to predict the contact stiffness, while the empirical elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film thickness method and the complete numerical EHL model are used to predict the oil film stiffness. The numerical model mainly consists of the Reynolds equation; the film thickness equation, in which the regular surface roughness is taken into consideration; the force balance equation; and the viscosity-pressure equation. The effects of the normal load, rolling speed, regular surface waviness, and starved lubrication level on the oil film stiffness are investigated.

Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to present the effort on developing a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model to study the tribological effect of asperities on rough surface. Design/methodology/approach The model, with the use of the average flow Reynolds equation and the K-E elasto-plastic contact model, allows predictions of hydrodynamic pressure and contact pressure on the virtual rough surface, respectively. Then, the substrate elastic deformation is calculated by discrete convolution fast-Fourier transform (DC-FFT) method to modify the film thickness recursively. Afterwards, corresponding ball-on-disk tests are conducted and the validity of the model demonstrated. Moreover, the effects of asperity features, such as roughness, curvature radius and asperity pattern factor, on the tribological properties of EHL, are also discussed though plotting corresponding Stribeck curves and film thickness shapes. Findings It is demonstrated that the current model predicts very close data compared with corresponding experimental results. And it has the advantage of high accuracy comparing with other typical models. Furthermore, smaller roughness, bigger asperity radius and transverse rough surface pattern are found to have lower friction coefficients in mixed EHL models. Originality/value This paper contributes toward developing a mixed EHL model to investigate the effect of surface roughness, which may be helpful to better understand partial EHL.

In EHL, the oil film thickness of rollers is controlled by the rate at which the oil is drawn into the conjunction of the disks by the moving surfaces of the rollers. The theory often assumes isothermal conditions in the inlet although it can be shown that the maximum shear rate often exceeds 106 sec−1, even in pure rolling. A theoretical analysis is presented for the oil temperature rise in the inlet of rollers, and the result is applied to predict the consequent film thickness. It is found that thermal effects on film thickness are only negligible at low rolling speeds. A comparison with experiment supports the conclusion that the thinning of the film thickness below that predicted by isothermal theory is substantially explained by inlet shear heating of the lubricant.

In Part 1, optical interferometry is used to study an elastohydrodynamically lubricated line contact between a taper roller and a glass plate under pure rolling conditions. The results give detailed information on film profiles and show the effects of end blending, lubricant starvation, deep scratches and static oil entrapments. In Part 2, oil film thicknesses in an elastohydrodynamic line contact are measured using optical interferometry and compared with theory. Two empirical formulae are derived for film thickness in the central region and at the exit constriction. In addition to the optical measurements, electrical measurements (resistance and capacitance) are made simultaneously, enabling a direct comparison to be made.

Abstract The relative sliding at the meshing point directly affects the contact and lubrication characteristics of the gear pair, and is the main cause of gear wear and power loss. In this research, for investigation of a new type of low sliding ratio (LSR) gear pair whose tooth profile is constructed by a cubic function, a Three-dimensional (3D) mixed EHL line contact model was established with consideration of the effect of tooth profile geometry, transient motion characteristics, load distribution and machining roughness. The distribution of the center film thickness of the LSR gear along the meshing line was predicted through an example the result of which was compared with a typical line contact EHL formula to verify the model. In addition, the difference was investigated in film thickness distribution, of friction coefficient and temperature rise between LSR spur gears and involute spur gears. Basing on above, there was discussion about the effect of 3D rough tooth surface on the contact lubrication characteristics of LSR gears. The results demonstrated that the minimum center film thickness of the LSR gear appeared at the alternating point of the concave and convex tooth surfaces. At the same time, compared with the involute gear, the LSR gear significantly increased the film thickness at the start and ending points of the meshing, and reduced the friction coefficient and the flash temperature rise.

A line contact tribo-pair is a key mechanism unit in rolling bearings, which is often characterized by ultra-high contact pressure and ultra-thin oil film. Elastohydrodynamic lubrication is often adopted to characterize the lubrication state of such a tribo-pair. As a primary parameter for elastohydrodynamic lubrication, the oil film thickness is often evaluated with simplified theoretical models or complicated measurements. So far, a comprehensive verification of the lubrication states in a real line-contact tribo-pair, however, is rarely reported. Focusing on the roller/ring tribo-pair of a wet-lubricated rolling bearing under pure rolling conditions, this study investigates the lubrication states by integrating multiple theories. Five regions including isoviscous hydrodynamic, piezoviscous hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic lubrication, mixture lubrication, and boundary lubrication regions can be identified using the framework. Then, validation experiments are carried out on a line contact tribo-pair test rig under the same operating conditions applied in the theoretical analysis. The oil film thickness is measured by the ultrasonic method. The analysis results demonstrate that only two regions, the elastohydrodynamic lubrication and mixture lubrication regions, can be identified using the experimental data. The identified elastohydrodynamic lubrication and mixture lubrication regions are consistent with theoretical analysis; and the Blok equation and elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory are suggested to calculate the oil film thickness in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication and mixture lubrication regions, respectively. Moreover, the oil film thickness calculated by the Dowson equation is larger than that based on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory due to a different viscous pressure equation.
