AbstractIn this paper, we propose three methods for door state classification with the goal to improve robot navigation in indoor spaces. These methods were also developed to be used in other areas and applications since they are not limited to door detection as other related works are. Our methods work offline, in low-powered computers as the Jetson Nano, in real-time with the ability to differentiate between open, closed and semi-open doors. We use the 3D object classification, PointNet, real-time semantic segmentation algorithms such as, FastFCN, FC-HarDNet, SegNet and BiSeNet, the object detection algorithm, DetectNet and 2D object classification networks, AlexNet and GoogleNet. We built a 3D and RGB door dataset with images from several indoor environments using a 3D Realsense camera D435. This dataset is freely available online. All methods are analysed taking into account their accuracy and the speed of the algorithm in a low powered computer. We conclude that it is possible to have a door classification algorithm running in real-time on a low-power device.

An important function in the future healthcare system involves measuring a patient’s vital signs, transmitting the measured vital signs to a smart device or a management server, analyzing it in real-time, and informing the patient or medical staff. Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) incorporates information technology (IT) into patient monitoring device (PMD) and is developing traditional measurement devices into healthcare information systems. In the study, a portable ubiquitous-Vital (u-Vital) system is developed and consists of a Vital Block (VB), a small PMD, and Vital Sign Server (VSS), which stores and manages measured vital signs. Specifically, VBs collect a patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG), blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), non-invasive blood pressure (NiBP), body temperature (BT) in real-time, and the collected vital signs are transmitted to a VSS via wireless protocols such as WiFi and Bluetooth. Additionally, an efficient R-point detection algorithm was also proposed for real-time processing and long-term ECG analysis. Experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of measurement, transmission, and analysis of vital signs in the proposed portable u-Vital system.

This study proposes a multiheaded object detection algorithm referred to as MANet. The main purpose of the study is to integrate feature layers of different scales based on the attention mechanism and to enhance contextual connections. To achieve this, we first replaced the feed-forward base network of the single-shot detector with the ResNet–101 (inspired by the Deconvolutional Single-Shot Detector) and then applied linear interpolation and the attention mechanism. The information of the feature layers at different scales was fused to improve the accuracy of target detection. The primary contributions of this study are the propositions of (a) a fusion attention mechanism, and (b) a multiheaded attention fusion method. Our final MANet detector model effectively unifies the feature information among the feature layers at different scales, thus enabling it to detect objects with different sizes and with higher precision. We used the 512 × 512 input MANet (the backbone is ResNet–101) to obtain a mean accuracy of 82.7% based on the PASCAL visual object class 2007 test. These results demonstrated that our proposed method yielded better accuracy than those provided by the conventional Single-shot detector (SSD) and other advanced detectors.
