Performance Evaluation of a 100kW Automotive Ceramic Gas Turbine at TIT1200°C Operation in a Rotating Sub-Assembly Test

A seven-year program, designated “Research & Development of Automotive Ceramic Gas Turbine Engine (CGT Program)” conducted by Petroleum Energy Center, was started in June 1990 with the object of demonstrating the advantageous potentials of ceramic gas turbines for automotive use. This paper describes the results of an assembly test on the rotating components including a ceramic turbine rotor and a compressor assembled in the ceramic static structure. The preliminary check-out test has been successfully accomplished under the actual engine operating condition of a turbine inlet temperature of 1200°C.

This CGT Program is conducted by Petroleum Energy Center. The basic engine is a 100kW, single-shaft regenerative engine having turbine inlet temperature of 1350°C and rotor speed of 110000rpm. In the forth year of the program, the engine components were experimentally evaluated and improved in the various test rigs, and the first assembly test including rotating and stationary components, was performed this year under the condition of turbine inlet temperature of 1200°C.

This CGT-Program is conducted by PEC with the support of MITI. The basic engine is a 100-kW, single-shaft engine having a turbine inlet temperature of a 1350°C and a rotor speed of 110,000 rpm. During the second year of the program, experimental evaluation of the various components was started, including a centrifugal compressor, a radial turbine rotor, a high speed rotor system and initial ceramic hot parts. Cold and hot spin testing of ceramic rotors from three different ceramic suppliers was also initiated.

NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. has been developing various silicon nitride materials, and the technology for fabricating components for ceramic gas turbines (CGT) using theses materials. We are supplying silicon nitride material components for the project to develop 300 kW class CGT for co-generation in Japan. EC-152 was developed for components that require high strength at high temperature, such as turbine blades and turbine nozzles. In order to adapt the increasing of the turbine inlet temperature (TIT) up to 1,350 °C in accordance with the project goals, we developed two silicon nitride materials with further unproved properties: ST-1 and ST-2. ST-1 has a higher strength than EC-152 and is suitable for first stage turbine blades and power turbine blades. ST-2 has higher oxidation resistance than EC-152 and is suitable for power turbine nozzles. In this paper, we report on the properties of these materials, and present the results of evaluations of these materials when they are actually used for CGT components such as first stage turbine blades and power turbine nozzles.

The development of new reusable space launch vehicle concepts has lead to the need for more advanced engine cycles. Many two-stage vehicle concepts rely on advanced gas turbine engines that can propel the first stage of the launch vehicle from a runway up to Mach 5 or faster. One prospective engine for these vehicles is the Air Turborocket (ATR). The ATR is an innovative aircraft engine flowpath that is intended to extend the operating range of a conventional gas turbine engine. This is done by moving the turbine out of the core engine flow, alleviating the traditional limit on the turbine inlet temperature. This paper presents the analysis of an ATR engine for a reusable space launch vehicle and some of the practical problems that will be encountered in the development of this engine.

A series of operation tests of a ceramic micro gas turbine has been successfully carried out. The baseline machine is a small single-shaft turbojet engine (J-850, Sophia Precision Corp.) with a centrifugal compressor, an annular type combustor, and a radial turbine. As a first step, an Inconel 713C alloy turbine rotor of 55 mm in diameter was replaced with a ceramic rotor (SN-235, Kyocera Corporation). A running test was conducted at rotational speeds of up to 140,000 rpm in atmospheric air. At this rotor speed, the compression pressure ratio and the thrust were 3 and 100 N, respectively. The total energy level (enthalpy and kinetic energy) of the exhaust gas jet was 240 kW. If, for example, it is assumed that 10% of the total power of the exhaust jet gas was converted into electricity, the present system would correspond to a generator with 24 kW output power. The measured turbine outlet temperature was 950°C (1,740°F) and the turbine inlet temperature was estimated to be 1,280°C (2,340°F). Although the ceramic rotor showed no evidence of degradation, the Inconel nozzle immediately in front of the turbine rotor partially melted in this rotor condition. As a second step, the Inconel turbine nozzle and casing were replaced with ceramic parts (SN-01, Ohtsuka Ceramics Inc.). The ceramic nozzle and case were supported by metal parts. Through tests with the ceramic nozzle, it became evident that one of the key technologies for the development of ceramic gas turbines is the design of the interface between the ceramic components and the metallic components, because the difference between the coefficients of linear thermal expansion of the ceramic and metal produces large thermal stress at their interface in the high-temperature condition. A buffer material made of alumina fiber was therefore introduced at the interface between the ceramic and metal.

Gas-turbine combined-cycle (GTCC) power generation is clean and efficient, and its demand will increase in the future from economic and social perspectives. Raising turbine inlet temperature is an effective way to increase combined cycle efficiency and contributes to global environmental conservation by reducing CO2 emissions and preventing global warming. However, increasing turbine inlet temperature can lead to the increase of NOx emissions, depletion of the ozone layer and generation of photochemical smog. To deal with this issue, MHPS (MITSUBISHI HITACHI POWER SYSTEMS) and MHI (MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES) have developed Dry Low NOx (DLN) combustion techniques for high temperature gas turbines. In addition, fuel flexibility is one of the most important features for DLN combustors to meet the requirement of the gas turbine market. MHPS and MHI have demonstrated DLN combustor fuel flexibility with natural gas (NG) fuels that have a large Wobbe Index variation, a Hydrogen-NG mixture, and crude oils.

A Performance Seeking Control (PSC) can realize the operations advantageous enough to accomplish the economy, safety, engine life, and environmental issues by reducing the control margin to the extremity together with selection of the control variables so that various kinds of parameters will be minimized or maximized. This paper describes the results obtained from the simulation study concerning the PSC aiming at the efficiency enhancement, power improvement, and longer engine life of a two-spool regenerative gas turbine engine having two control variables. By constructing the dynamic simulation of the engine, steady-state characteristics and dynamic characteristics are derived; then, a PSC system is designed and evaluated. It is concluded that the PSC for the gas turbine of this type can be realized by the turbine inlet temperature control.

This paper describes the results of modelling the performance of several indirectly fired gas turbine (IFGT) power generation system configurations based on four gas turbine class sizes, namely 5 kW, 50 kW, 5 MW and 100 MW. These class sizes were selected to cover a wide range of installations in residential, commercial, industrial and large utility power generation installations. Because the IFGT configurations modelled consist of a gas turbine engine, one or two recuperators and a furnace; for comparison purpose this study also included simulations of simple cycle and recuperated gas turbine engines. Part-load, synchronous-speed simulations were carried out with generic compressor and turbine maps scaled for each engine design point conditions. The turbine inlet temperature (TIT) was varied from the design specification to a practical value for a metallic high-temperature heat exchanger in an IFGT system. As expected, the results showed that the reduced TIT can have dramatic impact on the power output and thermal efficiency when compared to that in conventional gas turbines. However, the simulations also indicated that several configurations can lead to higher performance, even with the reduced TIT. Although the focus of the study is on evaluation of thermodynamic performance, the implications of varying configurations on cost and durability are also discussed.

The performance goal of modern gas turbine engines, both land-base and air-breathing engines, can be achieved by increasing the turbine inlet temperature (TIT). The level of TIT in the near future can reach as high as 1700 °C for utility turbines and over 1900 °C for advanced military engines. Advanced and innovative cooling techniques become one of the crucial major elements supporting the development of modern gas turbines, both land-based and air-breathing engines with continual increment of turbine inlet temperature (TIT) in order to meet higher energy demand and efficiency. This paper discusses state-of-the-art airfoil cooling techniques that are mainly applicable in the mainbody and trailing edge section of turbine airfoil. Potential internal cooling designs for near-term applications based on current manufacturing capabilities are identified. A literature survey focusing primarily on the past four to five years has also been performed.

Under the ongoing seven-year program, designated “Research and Development of Automotive Ceramic Gas Turbine Engine (CGT Program)”, started in June 1990. Japan Automobile Research Institute. Inc. (JARI) is continuing to address the issues of developing and demonstrating the advantageous potentials of ceramic gas turbines for automotive use. This program has been conducted by the Petroleum Energy Center (PEC) with the financial support of MITI. The basic engine is a 100 kW, single-shaft regenerative engine having a turbine inlet temperature of 1350°C and a rotor speed of 110,000 rpm. In the third year of this program, the experimental evaluation of the individual engine components and various assembly tests in a static thermal test rig were continued. Exhaust emissions were also measured in a performance test rig for an initially designed pre-mixed, pre-vaporized lean (PPL) combustor. A maximum speed of 130,700 rpm was obtained during hot spin tests of delivered ceramic turbine rotors, which was almost the same level as during cold spin tests. A dynamic thermal test including a centrifugal compressor, a ceramic radial turbine rotor and all the ceramic stationary hot parts was initiated.
