For the three-dimensional BTZ black hole we consider a Selberg type zeta function. We indicate how special values of its logarithm correspond to certain thermodynamic quantities associated with the black hole.

Using modular bootstrap we show the lightest primary fields of a unitary compact two-dimensional conformal field theory (with [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) has a conformal weight [Formula: see text]. This implies that the upper bound on the dimension of the lightest primary fields depends on their spin. In particular if the set of lightest primary fields includes extremal or near extremal states whose spin to dimension ratio [Formula: see text], the corresponding dimension is [Formula: see text]. From AdS/CFT correspondence, we obtain an upper bound on the spectrum of black hole in three-dimensional gravity. Our results show that if the first primary fields have large spin, the corresponding three-dimensional gravity has extremal or near extremal BTZ black hole.

We compute the entanglement negativity for various pure and mixed state configurations in a bath coupled to an evaporating two dimensional non-extremal Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) black hole obtained through the partial dimensional reduction of a three dimensional BTZ black hole. Our results exactly reproduce the analogues of the Page curve for the entanglement negativity which were recently determined through diagrammatic technique developed in the context of random matrix theory.

We study the wave equation for a massive scalar in three-dimensional AdS-black hole spacetimes to understand the unitarity issues in a semiclassical way. Here we introduce four interesting spacetimes: the non-rotating BTZ black hole (NBTZ), pure AdS spacetime (PADS), massless BTZ black hole (MBTZ), and extremal BTZ black hole (EBTZ). Our method is based on the potential analysis and solving the wave equation to find the condition for the frequency ω exactly. In the NBTZ case, one finds the quasinormal (complex and discrete) modes which signals for a non-unitary evolution. Real and discrete modes are found for the PADS case, which means that it is unitary obviously. On the other hand, we find real and continuous modes for the two extremal black holes of MBTZ and EBTZ. It suggests that these could be candidates for the unitary system.

We consider the Hairy black hole of dimensionally continued gravity with power-Yang–Mills magnetic source and Lorentz symmetry violating Bañados, Teitelboim and Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in massive gravity. We utilize the general form of first law of black hole thermodynamics and compute different thermodynamic quantities. Keeping in mind the importance of negative cosmological constant [Formula: see text], we derive corresponding equations of state and discuss the phase transitions which is comparable with chemical Van der Waals fluid. We also find out the critical points and observe that system exhibits first-order small as well as large black holes phase transitions.

Hawking's area theorem can be understood from a quasistationary process in which a black hole accretes positive energy matter, independent of the details of the gravity action. I use this process to study the dynamics of the inner as well as the outer horizons for various black holes which include the recently discovered exotic black holes and three-dimensional black holes in higher derivative gravities as well as the usual Banados–Teitelboim–Zanelli (BTZ) black hole and the Kerr black hole in four dimensions. I find that the area for the inner horizon "can decrease," rather than increase, with the quasistationary process. However, I find that the area for the outer horizon "never decrease" such as the usual area theorem still works in our examples, though this is quite nontrivial in general. I also find that the recently proposed new entropy formulae for the above mentioned, recently discovered black holes satisfy the second law of thermodynamics.

Abstract We study a holographic construction of quantum rotating BTZ black holes that incorporates the exact backreaction from strongly coupled quantum conformal fields. It is based on an exact four-dimensional solution for a black hole localized on a brane in AdS4, first discussed some years ago but never fully investigated in this manner. Besides quantum CFT effects and their backreaction, we also investigate the role of higher-curvature corrections in the effective three-dimensional theory. We obtain the quantum-corrected geometry and the renormalized stress tensor. We show that the quantum black hole entropy, which includes the entanglement of the fields outside the horizon, satisfies the first law of thermodynamics exactly, even in the presence of backreaction and with higher-curvature corrections, while the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy does not. This result, which involves a rather non-trivial bulk calculation, shows the consistency of the holographic interpretation of braneworlds. We compare our renormalized stress tensor to results derived for free conformal fields, and for a previous holographic construction without backreaction effects, which is shown to be a limit of the solutions in this article.
