The reinjection of the fire-flooding exhaust is a novel disposal process for handling the exhaust produced by the in-situ combustion technology. For reasonable process design and safe operation, it is of great significance to select an optimum property calculation method for the fire-flooding exhaust. However, due to the compositional particularity and the wide range of operating parameters during reinjection, the state equations in predicting the exhaust properties over the wide range of operating parameters have not been studied clearly yet. Hence, this paper investigates the applicability of several commonly-used equations of state, including the Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation, Peng–Robinson equation, Lee–Kesler–Plocker equation, Benedict–Webb–Rubin–Starling equation, and GERG-2008 equations. Employing Aspen Plus software, the gas densities, compressibility factors, volumetric coefficients, and dew points for five exhaust compositions are calculated. In comparison with the experimental data comprehensively, the result indicates that the Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation shows the highest precision over a wide range of temperature and pressure. The mean absolute percentage error for the above four parameters is 3.84%, 5.17%, 5.53%, and 4.33%, respectively. This study provides a reference for the accurate calculation of the physical properties of fire-flooding exhausts when designing and managing a reinjection system of fire-flooding exhaust.

AbstractPolyethylene (C2H4)n was compressed to pressures between 10 and 30 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and laser heated above 2500 K for approximately one second. This resulted in the chemical decomposition of the polymer into carbon and hydrocarbon reaction products. After quenching to ambient temperature, the decomposition products were measured in the DAC at pressures ranging from ambient to 29 GPa using a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). XRD identified cubic diamond and methane as the predominant product species with their pressure–volume relationships exhibiting strong correlations to the diamond and methane equations of state. Length scales associated with the diamond products, obtained from SAXS measurements, indicate the formation of nanodiamonds with a radius of gyration between 12 and 35 nm consistent with 32–90 nm diameter spherical particles. These results are in good agreement with the predicted product composition under thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium.

Neutron star is an important object for us to verify the equation of state of hadronic matter. For a specific choice of equations of state, mass and radius of a neutron star are determined, for which there are constraints from observations. According to some previous studies, since the strong magnetic field acts as a repulsive force, there is a possibility that neutron stars with strong magnetic fields may have relatively heavier masses than other non-magnetized neutron stars. In this paper, the structure of a neutron star with a strong internal magnetic field is investigated by changing its internal functional form to see how much the neutron star can be massive and also how radius of a neutron star can be within a certain range.

AbstractFor carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications different sets of equations of state are used to describe the whole CCS-chain. While for the transport and pipeline sections highly accurate equations of state (EOS) explicit in the Helmholtz energy are used, properties under typical geological storage conditions are described by more simple, mostly cubic EOS, and brines are described by Gibbs energy models. Combining the transport and storage sections leads to inconsistent calculations. Since the used models are formulated in different independent variables (temperature and density versus temperature and pressure), mass and energy balances are challenging and equilibria in the injection region are difficult to model. To overcome these limitations, a predictive combination of the Gibbs energy-based IAPWS seawater model (IAPWS R13-08, 2008) with Helmholtz energy-based multi-parameter EOS is presented within this work. The Helmholtz energy model used in this work is based on the EOS-CG-2016 of Gernert and Span (J Chem Thermodyn 93:274–293, 10.1016/j.jct.2015.05.015, 2016). The results prove that a consistent combination of the two different models is possible. Furthermore, it is shown, that a more complex brine model needs to be combined with Helmholtz energy EOS for calculations at storage conditions.
