Low temperature disperse dyeing of nylon 6 and polyester fibers is investigated when CI Disperse Violet 1 is dispersed with a double-tailed surfactant, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDDMAB). Dyeing temperatures are 50°C for nylon 6 and 110°C for polyester. Color yield, dye penetration, and color fastness properties of fibers dyed in the presence of DDDMAB are almost the same as those of fibers dyed with a conventional dye, a dyehouse grade of CI Disperse Violet 1, at high temperatures. These results suggest the feasibility and practicality of low temperature dyeing of nylon 6 and polyester fibers with DDDMAB.

Development of chitosan as a thickener for direct printing of natural dye on cotton fabric was investigated. Chitosan was applied as a thickener at various concentrations and its effect on the print properties was determined in comparison with the typical printing thickener, sodium alginate. The results exhibited that chitosan affected the fabric properties by increasing fabric yellowness and stiffness. However, with increasing chitosan concentrations, the yellowness reduced only marginally. Direct printing on cotton fabric with 3% Natural Chestnut at varying chitosan concentrations showed that the optimum chitosan concentration for the printing was at 3%w/v, being equivalent to the viscosity of 17,800 mPa. The 3%w/v chitosan imparted the ultimate color yield, print outline sharpness and a minimal dye bleeding on the unprinted area of the fabric. Use of chitosan concentration higher than 3%w/v led to poor print properties on the fabric. The efficiency as a thickener of chitosan was found to be superior to sodium alginate. A high color yield and good color fastness properties on cotton fabric were rendered in the case of chitosan thickener at the same applied concentration with sodium alginate.

Supercritical CO2 fluid dyeing, a new type of anhydrous dyeing technology, has the advantage of high uptake rate, short dyeing process, recycling of dyes and CO2, and zero discharge. This study investigated a dyeing technique of loose fibers using supercritical CO2 as solvent to replace water. Based on the existing characteristics of the self-developed supercritical CO2 dyeing equipment, a special dyeing frame of loose fibers was designed. Using the dyeing frame and inner and outer dyeing processes, polyester fibers were dyed with disperse red 153# maternal dyes at temperatures of 80–140?, pressures of 17–29MPa and time of 20–80min, respectively. The experimental results revealed that the dyeing performance of fibers was good on the dyeing frame, as well as with a favorably increased temperature, pressure and time. Dyeing temperature had a strong influence on the color yield. The dyeing results were compared with those of polyester fibers dyed with disperse red 153# dyes. With the special dyeing frame of loose fibers, color fastness to washing and artificial light was generally similar to conventional aqueous medium methods.

This study investigated the use of a thickening agent derived from modified starch of wild taro corms in the screen printing of cotton fabric using reactive dye. The best conditions for developing the print paste and steaming time in order to obtain maximum color yield were established. The results revealed impressive color fastness properties in the printed samples; although, the printed fabric possessed slightly lesser tensile and tear strength, in comparison with the unprinted fabric. The printed fabric also exhibited increased bending stiffness properties. Largely, this study reveals that the printing paste containing the thickening agent derived from carboxymethyl starch within wild taro corms can be utilized in the printing of cotton fabric using reactive dye.

Coconut husk is considered waste and its fibers can be used as a source of natural dyes for textiles. The objective of this research is to obtain natural dyes from old coconut (Cocos nucifera) husk waste fibers through the extraction process. Brown color was produced in the liquid-liquid extraction method. The brown color natural dyes were then used to dye cotton cloth. Three different binding agents were used during the fixation process, i.e. tunjung, naphtol salt, and alum. The coloring results of the natural dye on the cotton cloth were as follow: with alum binding agent the resulting color was light brown (cream), whereas tunjung binding agent produced a greenish brown color, and using napthol salt binding agent produced yellow color. The colored cotton cloths were tested for their color fastness properties against rubbing, soap washing, and sunlight exposure. The measurement scale used was grey scales, which was used to evaluate the color change (color fading) and color staining (color transfer) during color fastness testing. In general, based on the results, the colored cotton cloth using alum as binding agent showed better color fastness properties against rubbing, soap washing, and sunlight exposure compared to the ones using tunjung and naphtol salt binding agents.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seed germination is strongly temperature dependent and under high temperatures, germination of most of genotypes can be erratic or completely inhibited. Lettuce seeds of 'Dark Green Boston' (DGB) were incubated at temperatures ranging from 15° to 35°C at light and dark conditions. Other seeds were imbibed in dark at 20°; 25°; 30°; and 35°C for 8 and 16 hours and then transferred to 20 or 35°C, in dark. Seeds were also incubated at constant temperature of 20° and 35 °C, in the dark, as control. In another treatment, seeds were primed for 3 days at 15°C with constant light. DGB lettuce seeds required light to germinate adequately at temperatures above 25°C. Seeds incubated at 20°C had 97% germination, whereas seeds incubated at 35°C did not germinate. Seeds imbibed at 20°C for 8 and 16 hours had germination. At 35°C, seeds imbibed initially at 20°C for 8 and 16 hours, had 89 and 97% germination, respectively. Seeds imbibed at 25°C for 16 hours, germinated satisfactory at 35°C. High temperatures of imbibition led to no germination. Primed and non-primed seeds had 100% germination at 20°C. Primed seeds had 100% germination at 35°C, whereas non-primed seeds germinate only 4%. The first hours of imbibition are very critical for lettuce seed germination at high temperatures.

Dyeing and fastness properties of a series of 4-fluorosulfonylphenylazo-5-pyrazolone dyes on polyester were investigated in this study. The 4-nitrophenylazo-5-pyrazolone dyes were also synthesized to compare their dyeing and fastness properties on polyester with those of fluorosulfonyl-substituted analogues. The substantivity of 4-arylazo-5-pyrazolone derivatives containing a p-fluorosulfonyl group in the diazo component was lower than that of their nitro analogues which have a higher extinction coefficient and higher affinity because of the polar nitro group. They showed relatively hypsochromic color and lower chroma on polyester compared with their nitro analogues because of the relatively weaker electron-accepting power of the fluorosulfonyl group compared to the nitro group. Disperse dyeing of polyester with 4-fluorosulfonylphenylazo-5-pyrazolone disperse dyes achieved high color fastness and reduces the adverse environmental impact of the dyeing process by providing the option of performing alkali clearing instead of reductive clearing, which has high biological oxygen demand when discharged into the dyeing effluent and generates carcinogenic aromatic amines.

This investigation was aimed at introducing natural dye extracted from the bark ofCassia Singueanaplant for dyeing chrome tanned sheep skin crust leather. The colorant was extracted by aqueous extraction and its strength evaluated using UV-Visible spectroscopy. The extraction with the highest strength (3.9 atλmaxof 400 nm) was obtained at temperature of 95°C, concentration of 60 g/l, and time of 60 minutes. The possibility of using aloe vera juice and mango bark extract as natural mordants for leather coloration was investigated. Dyeing was conducted with and without mordant using different combinations of temperature, time, pH, and concentration of mordants. All three mordanting techniques were evaluated. The color strength(K/S), CIEL⁎a⁎b⁎values, and fastness properties (light, rubbing, and perspiration) of dyed leather samples were evaluated using appropriate instruments and according to international standards. Majority of samples exhibited that fastness result was in the range of good-excellent. Significantly better color fastness was obtained in case of leather samples premordanted with aloe vera. This study leads to the conclusion that dye extracted from bark ofCassia singueanacan be used as colorant for tanned leather with the selected natural mordants.
