This paper describes current developments in automating the processes to author technical information (TI) and deliver it using microcomputers. It describes desirable characteristics which support the presentation of TI for technicians varying in skill levels. Addressed are human factors issues relating to information access, user acceptance, and display formats. Programming is being done in Smalltalk/V, an object oriented language, on a Zenith 248 computer, which is compatible with the IBM PC/AT. The project emphasizes low cost authoring and delivery of information which traditionally has been contained in paper technical manuals. Our intent is to support the Department of Defense initiative to shift from paper to paperless technical manuals.

This paper describes the design, construction and testing of an experimental setting, making it possible to study the endothelium under different pathophysiological conditions. This novel experimental approach allows the application of the following stimuli to an ex vivo vessel in a physiological bath: (a) a realistic intravascular pressure waveform defined by the user; (b) shear stress in the endothelial layer since, in addition to the pressure waveform, the flow through the vessel can be independently controlled by the user; (c) conditions of hypo/hyperoxia and hypo/hypercapnia in an intravascular circulating medium. These stimuli can be applied alone or in different combinations to study possible synergistic or antagonistic effects. The setting performance is illustrated by a proof of concept in an ex vivo rabbit aorta. The experimental setting is easy to build by using very low-cost materials widely available. Online Supplement files provide all the technical information (e.g., circuits, codes, 3D printer drivers) following an open-source hardware approach for free replication.

This article describes the development and pilot testing of a computer-based, multiple-behavior obesity prevention program for adolescents. Using the Transtheoretical Model as a framework, this intervention offers individualized feedback based on readiness to engage in physical activity, to consume fruits and vegetables, and to limit television viewing. Focus groups and interviews with students, teachers, school administrators, and experts guided the development. Forty-five students participated in a baseline intervention session and completed a 16-item acceptability measure. Ratings were positive, with item means ranging from 3.60–4.75 on a 5-point scale. Student responses to open-ended questions aided in the enhancement of the intervention, for which an effectiveness trial begins in September 2006. This formative work demonstrated the acceptability of this school-based intervention approach, which can be promoted and prescribed by school nurses. Further, if found effective, it can be disseminated as an efficient, low-cost, population-based approach designed to address the epidemic of obesity.

Computer graphics systems existing today allow for the manipulation of increasingly complex visual displays. The visualisation of information in a computer-based medium suggests solutions to two critical problems: first, the overabundance of alphanumeric information routinely generated by information systems and second, the expression complexity in situations that face the business and research communities. Graphic designers accustomed to handling complex scientific and technical information in a systematic and structural way offer a resource for the development of more effective presentations of computer-generated material. Certain graphic designers who specialise in informational graphics are interested in beginning a conversation with the people developing computer graphics software and firmware. The outcome of these dialogues would be the articulation and utilisation of the principles and elements of effective visual design.
