Air-dried aerial parts of wild Cladanthus mixtus were collected from two different regions of Morocco, Bouznika and Oujda, during 2011 and 2012. Forty individual plant samples were hydrodistilled using a Clevenger apparatus and the obtained essential oils were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The yield obtained varies greatly with a range of 0.3 to 0.8%. The chemical composition of C. mixtus oils changes from one region to another. A total of 53 constituents were identified. To the best of our knowledge, two chemotypes were defined for the first time for this species in the regions studied. 2-Methyl-2- trans-butenyl methacrylate (32.8–35.2%) / ar-curcumene (13–14%) characterize the chemotypeof the C. mixtus plants from Bouznika, and trans-β-farnesene (35.5–50.3%) the chemotype from Oujda.

Background: The essential oil from the Acantholimon genus have been an integral part of the traditional food additive in Middle East. Most of the plants in Acantholimon genus have not been studied scientifically. The aim of this study is to investigate the chemical composition, antibacterial, insecticidal and anti-oxidant activities of three Acantholimon species including Acantholimon atropatanum, A. gilliatii and A. tragacanthium. Method: The essential oils of the aerial parts were extracted by hydrodistillation. Chemical constitutions were identified by gas chromatography- mass spectroscopy technique, also their toxicities were assessed against the two important grain products pests, Oryzeaphilus mercator and Tribolium castaneum. Antibacterial activity was assessed against the three foodborne bacteria that include Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus based on the disc diffusion assay. Free-radical-scavenging property was identified based on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Results: 2-hexahydrofarnesyl acetone was the main compound in A. gilliatii and A. tragacanthium, whilst farnesyl acetone, heptacosane and germacrene D were the principal components of A. atropatanum essential oil. These oils exhibited 40-90% mortality of O. mercator and/or T. castaneum at a dose of 12 μl/l air after 48h of exposure, and exhibited significant free-radicalscavenging property (RC50 = 3.7 × 10-3 - 8.3 × 10-3 mg/ml). The oils of A. tragacanthium and A. gilliatii showed a weaker antibacterial activity compared to A. atropatanum. Conclusion: A. atropatanum, A. gilliatii and A. tragacanthium essential oils had significant insecticidal and anti-oxidant properties. They also showed week to moderate antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus.

Plant samples of Lepidium campestre (L.) W. T. Aiton (pepperwort) were analyzed in detail by GC and GC-MS. The analysis of the autolysates obtained from inflorescences, stems, leaves, and underground parts and the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation allowed the identification of a series of glucosinolate degradation products, mainly isothiocyanates and nitriles. Besides previously identified ones in this species, the analyses resulted in the identification of degradation metabolites identified in pepperwort for the first time, and suggested the presence of heptyl glucosinolate, 3- phenylpropyl glucosinolate, glucoiberverin, glucoiberin, sinalbin, glucoerucin, glucoberteroin, gluconasturtiin, glucolepigramin, glucolesquerellin, glucobrassicanapin, and glucotropaeolin in this species as the most likely glucosinolate precursors. The results showed the localized accumulation of glucoberteroin, glucoerucin, and glucolesquerellin in the roots, the plant organ most exposed to pathogens, whereas sinalbin and glucobrassicanapin were accumulated in the reproductive organs and the organs most exposed to herbivores, i.e. in the aerial parts of the plant.

Protium aracouchini (Aubl.) Marchand [sin Icica aracouchini Aubl.], which occurs in the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, in the Brazilian Amazon, was evaluated for the presence of galls, for resin exudation and the composition of the essential oils from the aerial parts and the resin. The experiment to stimulate the exudation of resin from the trunk was conducted using a 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid solution. The resin produced after 40 days and the aerial parts had their essential oils extracted in a Clevenger apparatus and the volatile chemical constituents were analyzed using GC/MS. The non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes α-copaene (21.15%) and α-gurjunene (13.69%), in addition to the oxygenated sesquiterpene spathulenol (10.32%), were detected as the majority constituents of the essential oil of the leaves, and a concentration similar to that of α-gurjunene was found in the branches (13.28%). The resin essential oil showed a high concentration of hydrocarbon monoterpenes (76.49%) with a predominance of α-pinene (17.57%) and limonene (46.11%). Four gall morphotypes were found associated with this species. The present study reports for the first time information on the volatile constituents and the resinous potential of P. aracouchini, and registers the morphotypes of the galls that help in the taxonomy of the species.

Abstract The objective of the present paper was the assessment of the chemical composition of the essential oils from four Asteraceae species with a considerable food, medicinal, and agricultural value, collected in Egypt, together with their in vitro inhibitory activity against molds and yeasts. The essential oil of Launaea cornuta flowers was also evaluated for the first time, but because of its very low yield (<0.01%), no antifungal test was performed.

The essential oils from different aerial parts of Lonicera japonica have been extracted by hydro-distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Quantitative and qualitative differences were found between the analyzed plant parts. A total of eighty-nine compounds were identified. The main constituents were ( Z, Z)-farnesole (16.2%) and linalool (11.0%) for the flowers fraction, hexadecanoic acid (16.0%) and linalool (8.7%) for the leaves fraction, and hexadecanoic acid (31.4%) for the stems. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were absent from all the oils, and oxygenated sesquiterpenes were not identified in the essential oil of the stem.

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Valeriana parviflora (Trevir) BM Vadillo, an endemic species of the Venezuelan Andes, collected from the same location in two different seasons (dry and rainy) of the year, were analyzed by GC/MS. The essential oil obtained during the dry season showed linalool (11.9%), eugenol (8.9%), p-menth-1-en-9-al (8.7%) and α-terpineol (7.7%) as main components, while the oil obtained from the rainy season collection showed o-xylol (16.2%), 3-methyl isovaleric acid (10.6%) and geranial (9.5%) as major compounds. Some of the differences in the composition of these oils might be due to the climatic conditions at the time of harvesting.

The essential oil isolated from Asarum cordifolium C. E. C. Fischer recently discovered in Vietnam, and A. glabrum Merr., an endangered species listed as vulnerable in the Red Data Book of Vietnam, have been analyzed by a combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques including 13C NMR spectroscopy. The composition of A. cordifolium essential oil, investigated for the first time, was dominated by elemicin (82.5%). The essential oil isolated from A. glabrum contained safrole (41.9%) as its major component and was characterized by the diversity of phenylpropanoids contained in this oil (10 compounds).

The essential oils of Blainvellea rhomboidea (Asteraceae) were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS and GC/FID. Initially, the essential oil from the aerial parts was investigated. From the 18 identified components, 5-indanol (14.5%) followed by p-cymen-8-ol (10.1%), β-caryophyllene (9.6%), caryophyllene oxide (9.6%), limonene (8.6%), terpinolene (7.8%), and spathulenol (7.7%) were the major constituents. The oil was tested against seven bacterial strains and the results showed significant antimicrobial activity. As a consequence, the essential oils from leaves and from flowers were analyzed separately. The major constituents of the leaf oil were terpinolene (21.2%), β-caryophyllene (19.2%), spathulenol (9.1%), caryophyllene oxide (7.4%), and bicyclogermacrene (7.1%), while the oil of the flowers contained terpinolene (28.1%), 5-indanol (16.3%), p-cymen-8-ol (15.3%) and limonene (14.7%) as prevalent compounds. The oils were tested against the same bacterial strains and the flower oil was the more active. These results indicated that the components of the essential oil from flowers seem to be responsible for the activity.

For the first time, the chemical composition of the seed essential oil of Rhododendron tomentosum was determined. Forty-seven compounds were identified, comprising 91.7% of the total oil. Palustrol (38.3%) and ledol (27.0%) were the predominant constituents. Some constituents, such as β-pinene oxide, iso-menthyl acetate, nerolidyl acetate, cadalene and guaiazulene were characteristic only for the seeds and were identified for the first time in Rh. tomentosum oils. For comparison purposes, the essential oil isolated from the shoots of the same plant were analyzed [GC(FID) in combination with RIs, GC-MS and 13C NMR]. More than a half of the oil was comprised of ledol (36.5%) and palustrol (21.0%). Quantitative analysis of ascaridol, a heat-sensitive compound, was carried out by 13C NMR spectroscopy. Indeed, ascaridol undergoes partial thermal isomerization to iso-ascaridol during GC analyses.

The aim of the present study was to investigate and identify the essential oil constituents of Leucas indica (L.) R.Br. (Lamiaceae). The chemical composition of the hydro-distilled essential oil was obtained from the flowering aerial parts of L. indica for the first time. The oil was analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Fifty-six compounds were identified, representing 99.1% of the total oil. The main constituents were β-caryophyllene (51.1%) and α-caryophyllene (10.2%). The oil was found to be rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (71.8%).
