Capture reaction cross sections at energies far below the Coulomb barrier are of major importance for the understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis. Since the cross sections of the majority of these reactions are very small, the use of high efficiency detectors is essential. In this work, a new method for capture reaction cross section measurements based on a large volume 4π NaI detector is presented.

We investigated the reaction dynamics induced by the 7Be,8B+208Pb collisions at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Charged particles originated by both the col- lisions were detected by means of 6 ΔE-Eres telescopes of a newly developed detector array. Experimental data were analysed within the framework of the Optical Model and the total reaction cross-sections were compared together and with the 6,7Li+208Pb colli-sion data. According to the preliminary results, 7Be nucleus reactivity is rather similar to the 7Li one whereas the 8B+208Pb total reaction cross section appears to be much larger than those measured for reactions induced by the other weakly-bound projectiles on the same target.

In this letter, the necessity of a more precise estimation of the data on the reaction π-p → f2(1270)n → π0π0n is mentioned. The total cross-section σ(π-p → f2(1270)n) obtained from the data on the reaction π-p → π0π0n is shown to be approximately three times smaller than that following from the π-p → π+π-n data and also four times smaller than the prediction of the one-pion-exchange model. It is very important to resolve this disagreement because the results on the reaction π-p → f2(1270)n → π0π0n are used directly for the normalization of other reaction cross-sections and determination of branching ratios for some resonances.

We study the nuclear reaction cross-sections for some of the neutron-rich nuclei in the lighter mass region of the periodic chart which are recently measured. The well-known Glauber formalism is used by taking deformed relativistic and nonrelativistic densities as input in the calculations. We find reasonable reaction cross-sections with both the densities. However with a better inspection of the results, it is noticed that the results obtained with relativistic densities are more closure to the experimental data than the nonrelativistic Skyrme densities.

Analysis of reaction cross sections of [Formula: see text] are performed with Glauber model (GM) including medium modifications arising from Fermi motion and in-medium nucleon–nucleon (NN) total reaction cross section. The density distributions of Boron isotopes are described by a deformed-average Fermi shape, whose proton and neutron radii and deformation parameters are derived from relativistic mean field (RMF), harmonic oscillator (HO) and two-parameter Fermi (2pF). These densities can describe the reaction cross section of Boron isotopes except for [Formula: see text] which is better described by an HO core plus extended Gaussian (HOG) or HO plus a modified Yukawa (HOMY) tail, which depends on the 1n separation energy. It is found that Fermi motion effects dominated at intermediate energy, and they are important to describe the data in addition to in-medium effects. In-medium effects, which are incorporated locally, reduced the reaction cross section by about 3–5% at all energies. [Formula: see text] is confirmed as a one-neutron halo nucleus, where a large extended tail is observed in the extracted HOMY and HOG model densities as well as in the extracted radii, where the matter radius of [Formula: see text] is found to be about 2.92 fm, which is larger than that of [Formula: see text] (2.5 fm) and [Formula: see text] (2.82 fm) predicted using the GM model including Fermi motion and in-medium effects.

The nucleus–nucleus reaction cross-sections of [Formula: see text]C and [Formula: see text]C at 240[Formula: see text]MeV/u are calculated using the optical limit of the Glauber model. The deformation and radii of a deformed Fermi density are calculated from the relativistic mean field (RMF). The results are compared with the recent experimental data. It is found that the Fermi density whose quadrupole deformation parameters and radii are derived from RMF, using TMA effective interaction in the RMF Lagrangian, provide a satisfactory explanation of the experimental data of Na isotopes, except for [Formula: see text]Na, which are expected to be strongly deformed. For F isotopes, the deformed Fermi density adjusted to the radii derived from RMF, using TMA interaction, presents a lower reaction cross-section. The Lagrangian parameters set NL3* gives a good description of the data which is better than that predicted by TMA. On the other hand, the two forces cannot describe the reaction cross-section of [Formula: see text]F since it is expected to have a deformed halo structure. The radius deduced from the data is found to be of the order 3.5[Formula: see text]fm.

Using a variation of a standard attenuation technique, total proton reaction cross sections (σR) have been measured for Ti and B at eight incident proton energies between 20 and 50 MeV at the University of Manitoba Cyclotron Laboratory. The Ti cross sections are presented along with existing reaction cross section data and are compared with optical model predictions for σR. The B cross sections are compared with σR for the nearby elements Be and C. The B and Ti results are also compared to predictions of the opaque-nucleus model.

We investigated reaction cross section and inelastic collisions of the wide number of projectile and target nuclei using the Coulomb Modified Glauber Model (CMGM). The total reaction cross sections were calculated with and without accounting for in-medium effect for various heavy projectiles such as 56Fe26, 84Kr36, 132Xe54, 197Au79 and 238U92 that interact with Nuclear Emulsion Detector’s (NED) nuclei at incident energies at around 1 GeV/n. The calculated average values of reaction cross section are compared with the corresponding experimental data.

The 241Am(n,2n)240Am reaction cross section has been measured at neutron beam energy 17.5 MeV, relative to the 27Al(n,α)24Na, 197Au(n,2n)196Au and 93Nb(n,2n)92mNb reference reaction cross sections, using the activation technique. The irradiation was carried out at the Van der Graaff 5.5 MV Tandem accelerator laboratory of NCSR “Demokritos” with monoenergetic neutron beam provided by means of the 3H(d,n)4He reaction, implementing a new Ti-tritiated target. The high purity Am target has been constructed at IRMM, Geel, Belgium and consisted of 40 mg 241Am in the form of AmO2 pressed into pellet with Al2O3 and encapsulated into Al container. Due to this high radioactivity (5 GBq), the Am target was enclosed in a Pb container for safety reasons. After the end of the irradiation, the activity induced by the neutron beam at the target and reference foils, was measured off-line by two 100%, a 50% and a 16% relative efficiency, HPGe detectors.

Cross sections of the 174Hf(n,2n)173Hf and 176Hf(n,2n)175Hf reactions have been experimentally determined relative to the 27Al(n,α)24Na reference reaction at incident neutron energies of 15.3 and 17.1 MeV by means of the activation technique. The irradiations were carried out at the 5 MV tandem T11/25 Accelerator Laboratory of NCSR "Demokritos" with monoenergetic neutron beams provided via the 3H(d,n)4He reaction, using a new Ti-tritiated target of 373 GBq activity. In the determination of the 176Hf(n,2n)175Hf reaction cross section the contamination of the 174Hf(n,γ)175Hf and 177Hf(n,3n)175Hf reactions has been taken into account. Moreover, the neutron beam energy has been studied by means of Monte Carlo simulation codes and the neutron flux has been determined via the 27Al(n,α)24Na reference reaction.
