This is the second paper in a two-part series discussing the management of common restorative dental emergencies. The first paper focussed upon problems relating to conventional fixed and removable restorations, and this paper discusses the management of common dental implant related emergencies. With dental implant treatment becoming an increasingly popular method of replacing missing teeth, it is very likely that dentists working in general practice will routinely come across patients who have previously undergone this form of treatment, even if they themselves are not directly involved in placing or restoring dental implants. This paper is aimed at general dental practitioners (GDPs) who have some experience in managing dental implants, and those who want to gain further insight into how such situations may be managed.

Abstract Objective To assess the patient’s level of awareness of dental implants as an option to replace missing teeth and willingness to accept dental implant is lacking in a small city (Chitwan) Nepal. Materials and methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted on patients attending the prosthodontic, oral medicine and radiology clinics of Chitwan Medical College, Chitwan, Nepal. A self-administered questionnaire was used after pretesting through a pilot survey. The data analysis was done using SPSS version 20 (IBM Company, Chicago, USA). Statistical Analysis Various parameters were compared using Two-Sample Independent T-Test. The level of significant was set at p value = 0.05. Results A total of 84 subjects responded to the study. Only 47.6% of the participants have knowledge on dental implants. Majority of the participants (72%) considered the costs to be affordable and equal number of the participants replied that they were ready for treatment with dental implant. Majority of the participants received information from their dentists (53.1%) and from the friends and acquaintances (31.3%). The patients in Chitwan have moderate awareness of dental implants. Majority of the participants are aware and willing to consider dental plant treatments. Conclusions The patients in Chitwan have moderate awareness of dental implants. Majority of the participants are aware and willing to consider dental plant treatments. Proper information on dental implants should be provided to the patients so that they can accept the dental implant treatment.

1. Background: Loss of permanent teeth is very common, affected chewing function, speech and aesthetics; restoration of missing teeth with dental implant has several advantages, but we need thoroughly study the clinical and X ray features at the position at missing teeth, then to select the type of implant and make the best plan for the dental implant patients. 2. Materials and method: Cross-section descriptive study. From January 2009 to November 2010, study with 56 patients with 102 implants of MIS and Megagen systems at the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy and Vietnam-Cuba Hospital in Ha Noi. 3. Results: Distributed equally in male and female, common ages 40 – 59 (55,4%), the majority of missing teeth occurs in the lower jaw (63,8%) and especially, the teeth 36 and 46 (25,4%). The majority of missing teeth due to dental caries, dental pulp and apical diseases (64,7%) of the molar teeth (51,9%); the most position of missing tooth have enough bone for dental implants (87,3%), time of tooth loss and bone status in the position of tooth loss are related to each other (p < 0,01). Diameter and length of implant usually used 4.0 – 6.0 mm (63,7%) and 8.5 – 13.0 mm (83,3%). 4. Conclusion: Clinical and X ray features of edentulous patients has an important role in determining the type of implants and treatment planning of dental implants. Dental implant treatment is a highly predictable therapy, but when potentially lethal symptoms or complications occur, dentists must remove the implant fixture. Recently, reports on antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw have increased in the field of dental implants, although the relationship between dental implant treatment and antiresorptive agents remains unclear. Here, we report a case of antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw that developed after dental implant removal. A 67-year-old Japanese woman with a medical history of osteoporosis and 7 years of oral bisphosphonate treatment was referred to our hospital with a chief complaint of painful right mandibular bone exposure. A family dentist removed the dental implants from the right mandible using a trephine drill without flap elevation in August 2016. However, the healing was impaired; she was referred to our hospital 3 months after the procedure. We performed a sequestrectomy of the mandible under general anesthesia. In conclusion, this patient's course has two important implications: First, the removal of dental implants from patients who are prescribed oral bisphosphonates for long durations can cause antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. Second, meticulous procedures are required to prevent and treat the development of antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw after dental implant removal.

Usage of Implants in dentistry is tremendously increasing in recent times. This has led to the invention of new biomaterials for dental implants by the researchers. Continuous evolution has occurred in the field of dental implant biomaterials in the last two decades leading to the emergence of innovative biomaterials. This article summarizes the different implant biomaterials and the recent advances in this field. The material science and they are various biological and physical properties affecting their treatment outcome are discussed. Throughout the years, myriads of dental materials have been tried for replacement of missing tooth. Now titanium remains the gold standard as a dental implant material. Over the recent period, many Implant biomaterials have evolved. It includes composites, glass-ceramics, metal alloys, ceramics, glasses, and polymers. Nanotechnology is an emerging application in the branch of implant dentistry. Nanotechnology can improve the properties of dental implants for achieving good osseointegration. It is imperative for dental practitioners to have a good idea about the various biomaterials used for dental implants.

Dental implants are commonly used to replace the missing teeth in partially and completely edentulous ridges. While the overall success rate of implant dentistry is very high, dental implants seldom fail. The occurrence of implant failure is a matter of great concern for implantologists and awareness of such unavoidable fact is clinically important. The purpose of this review was to offer a critical evaluation of the literature and to provide the clinician with scientifically-based diagnostic criteria for monitoring the implant condition. Aetiologies and factors associated with implant failure should be elucidated for further improvement of the treatment outcome. This information may be necessary to develop effective strategies for treatment and prevention. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide an insight into different aspects of implant failures by highlighting various classifications put forward by different authors Key Words : Classification, Osseointegration, Implant failures.

ABSTRACT Background Treatment with dental implants has become increasingly important in the range of prosthodontic treatment. Significant improvements in oral rehabilitation particularly in edentulous individuals have been seen. In Adhiparasakthi Dental College, Melmaruvathur, a survey was made to evaluate awareness among patients for dental implants, their level of knowledge, and attitude toward replacement of missing teeth by dental implants. Materials and methods A survey of 480 people was conducted through a printed questionnaire and completed by willing respondents. The questionnaires were prepared in English and Tamil language to enable better understanding and completion. Results Of the 510 people surveyed, 480 responses were retrieved, of which 331 were aware of dental implant treatment in Melmaruvathur, Tamil Nadu. Among them, 304 respondents were aware that implants could be used for replacement of missing teeth. Most of the respondents stated that dental implants were placed in the jawbone, followed by gums. Only 41% respondents assumed that implants last for a lifetime and only 35% of respondents believe that poor oral hygiene was the most common cause of implant failure. Conclusion More dental education programs are needed to improve understanding of the importance of restoration of missing teeth. General implant awareness levels are satisfactory. However, increased awareness of patients for restoration of missing tooth with dental implants is necessary. Dental education programs with special emphasis on advantages, treatment, maintenance, and postoperative care of dental implant therapy are needed. Background & Objectives: The use of dental implants in partially or completely edentulous patients has proved effective and an accepted treatment modality with predictable long-term success. Dental implants are becoming a popular choice for replacing the missing teeth because of increased awareness about implants both in dentists and patients. The objective of the study was to assess the basic knowledge and education about dental implants among general dental practitioners (GDPs) of Nepal.Materials & Methods:  A cross sectional questionnaire was carried out among 110 GDPs which consist of twenty questions that were divided into three categories; first with some basic knowledge in implant dentistry, second with clinical knowledge of dental implants and third with dental implant education and training.Results: Out of 110 GDPs, 72.7% had basic knowledge about implant dentistry and 65.5% were not aware about advance surgical procedures like sinus lift and guided bone regeneration. All the GDPs were positive regarding more training and education in dental implants and 95.5% of them would like to incorporate dental implant treatment in their practice in future. Conclusion: GDPs should have adequate knowledge and training of dental implants which can be incorporated at undergraduate or post doctoral level so that they are skilled to provide quality dental implant therapy to their patients confidently.

Dental implants are widely used tooth replacement tools owing to their good oral rehabilitation and reconstruction capacities. Since dental implants are designed as a replacement for natural teeth, multi-functional abilities are desired to achieve successful implant treatment with improved osseointegration through promotion of mammalian cell activity and prevention of bacterial cell activity. In this study, we developed a graphene–chitosan hybrid dental implant (GC hybrid implant) using various concentrations of graphene, which demonstrated the different surface properties including increased wettability and roughness. Importantly, the GC hybrid implant under the optimal condition (i.e., 1% GC hybrid implant) could significantly promote osteoblast proliferation while reducing biofilm formation and bacterial activity. Our study demonstrates the potential of using this GC hybrid implant as a new type of dental implant, which can offer an effective design for the fabrication of advanced dental implants.
