The purpose of this study is to examine store-related factors contributing to the purchase intention towards private label brands (PLBs) among Gen Y customers in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Representing one of the biggest market segments in Malaysia, Gen Y is considered more open-minded to try new products than Baby Boomers. However, retail research focusing on Gen Y, particularly their buying intention of PLBs product, is scarce. A purposive sampling technique was utilised and a total of 300 questionnaires were distributed among Gen Y shoppers aged 23-39, who frequented supermarkets and drugstores. This study generated 240 usable responses (80% response rate). All the store-related variables were found to have significant relationships with attitude towards purchasing PLBs product, which in turn, affected purchase intention. Attitude mediated the relationships between all the store-related variables and purchase intention. Product category and retail format significantly moderated the relationship between attitude and purchase intention. This study benefits academic and marketing practitioners by expanding on previous literature towards customer behaviour, which the marketing practitioners could benefit from the private label initiative as well as have a better understanding of their target customers to further enhance the sales among the Gen Y customers.

As the world market share of private label brands (PLBs) increases, so does the importance of and need for research in this field. Given the growing presence of PLBs in Pakistan, this study aims to examine the effects of service quality on PLB image, which we hypothesize affects purchase intention and brand loyalty. We also measure the mediating effect of perceived risk on the relationship between PLB image and purchase intention. Based on a sample of 348 respondents, we apply a structural equation model and find that (i) service quality has a positive effect on PLB image, (ii) PLB image has a positive effect on purchase intention, (iii) PLB image has a positive relationship with perceived risk, although this does not mediate the relationship between PLB image and purchase intention, and (iv) purchase intention translates positively into brand loyalty.

This chapter examines the effect of sales promotion activities for PLs on consumers attitudes toward PLs and how these attitudes influence their purchase intentions. Regarding this objective, three hard-discount retail stores that have the highest number of branches around Turkey were included in the study. In addition to this, the PLs of dairy product category from each of the retail stores were examined, since is frequently consumed and dairy PLs have high market shares in most of the countries. In the scope of the study, 756 surveys were gathered and analyzed. Regarding the results, it was seen that the effect of sales promotion activities on consumers' attitudes toward PLs is 0.30. Moreover, the effect of consumers' attitudes toward PLs on their purchase intentions is 0.48, which means that if consumers' attitudes toward PLs can be developed in a positive way, it will increase their intention to purchase these products or brands by 48%. The findings of the study provide important implications to the practitioners and scholars in marketing and retailing fields.

In the era of the information-communication technology with the development of electronic commerce, consumers can buy almost everything anywhere and at any time. One of the greatest benefits of e-commerce has been the convenience and the vast choices which consumers get online. However, some serious issues exist that impede consumers from transaction online. These issues have attracted the attention of many marketing researchers in recent years. In this research, the authors focus on the impact of consumers' ethics perception of e-retailer on their purchase intention and satisfaction. The authors also try to clarify the roles of trust and commitment in the relationship of ethics on consumers purchase decision and satisfaction because of their importance in e-commerce but also the privation in the research of previous studies. The data collected from a survey of 390 online consumers in Vietnam. Results reveal that there are significant relationships between online retailers' ethics and consumers' purchase intention and satisfaction via the mediation of trust and commitment.

Purpose This study aims to examine the hedonism attributes, memorable tourism experience (MTE), revisit intention and their relationships. This study explores the antecedents of hedonism as physical environment, shopping at the destination, service quality, personalisation and exclusivity that influence MTE. The relationship of hedonism factors with revisit intention is also investigated in light of the mediation of MTE between them. Design/methodology/approach For this study, a sample of 600 tourists is collected by using the convenience sampling technique. The collected data is analysed by using the confirmatory factor analysis-structural equation modelling approach. Findings The empirically validated model recommends the significant relationships between the hedonism elements and revisits intention with the mediating effect of MTE. The findings suggest that tourists who positively perceive hedonism attributes are more likely to have positive MTEs, and they revisit the destination. Originality/value This research study examines the relationship of hedonism determinants with MTE of the tourists leading to their revisit intention for a tourism destination. It helps to understand MTE as the main component to affect tourists’ revisit intention for a destination and make sustainable tourism.

Purpose Product category involvement and relationship proneness are crucial in explaining relationship outcomes. Nevertheless, the authors know little about their roles in the formation of loyalty, especially in the retail industry. Individual consumer traits and preferences are likely to play a critical role in the success of relationship marketing. Yet, relationship marketing studies have fallen short of considering such individual differences. The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effects of product category involvement and relationship proneness on the relationship between satisfaction and loyalty in retail clothing stores. Design/methodology/approach Data were obtained using a survey of 220 consumers. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed theoretical model. Findings The results show that satisfaction significantly affects product category involvement and relationship proneness, which, in turn, significantly affect purchase intention and word-of-mouth (WOM). The results also show that product category involvement and relationship proneness partially mediate the impact of satisfaction on purchase intention and WOM. Research limitations/implications Product category involvement and relationship proneness play a critical role in explaining the satisfaction–loyalty link. Future research could consider the role of potential moderating variables. Practical implications Retail managers should not only focus on improving customer satisfaction to achieve customer loyalty, but should also consider the importance of product category involvement and relationship proneness, and their role in the formation of customer loyalty both in traditional and online environments. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to explore the mediating effects of product category involvement and relationship proneness on the relationship between satisfaction, purchase intention and WOM in the retail industry.

This chapter examines the CBBE of two different product category PLBs of the same retailer, holding the retailer constant. Specifically, the study presented examines and compares the CBBE and its underlying dimensions and their relationships for Walmart's Great Value (grocery, consumable household goods) and Equate (beauty, health, pharmacy) PLBs. Based on a total of 421 surveys (270 for the Great Value brand and 151 for the Equate brand), the study found that 1) while consumers seem to have accepted PLBs in general, Great Value and Equate have lower levels of acceptance among consumers and 2) the comparison of models for Great Value and Equate brands displayed similarities and a few differences in significant relationships among the CBBE dimensions. The findings of this study provide important insights to the management of the retail stores to identify the areas for improvements and develop strategies based on similarities and differences of the two brands.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between personal values and attitudes in an emerging market. And the authors verified whether the attitude plays a mediating role between personal values and the intention to purchase these products in the same market. Design/methodology/approach Two surveys were conducted with consumers of organic food in Brazil. The first study was conducted at two organic products fairs and obtained 385 responses. The second study was conducted on the internet and obtained 270 responses. The Portrait Values Questionnaire 21, plus attitude scales and purchase intent regarding organic food, was used. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling. Findings Significant relationships were found between personal values, such as openness to change (positive influence), conservation (positive), self-promotion (positive) and self-transcendence (negative). Significant relationships were also found between three personal values and the purchase intention of organic food (conservation – positive, self-promotion – positive and self-transcendence – negative), with all of them being mediated by attitude. The effect of openness to change on purchase intention was indirect, being mediated by attitude. Originality/value The authors noticed two theoretical gaps. The first involves the need to explore the attitude as a mediator in the relationship between the human values proposed by Schwartz (1992, 1994) and the intention to purchase organic food. Another perceived gap was pointed out by Steenkamp et al. (1999), Burgess and Steenkamp (2006) and Sheth (2011). These authors argue that consumption is different in emerging markets to that in more mature markets. This limits the ability to generalise consumer studies conducted in developed countries. This reasoning also applies to organic food.

AbstractDesire to be accepted by other people is one of the basic human needs. Social isolation or rejection is very stressful to person with disabilities. Social acceptance by normal people towards physical activity participation for the disabled plays a vital role in motivating them to be more physically active. A review of literature indicated that there are several factors that influence public acceptance towards participation of people with disabilities in physical activity. The present study aims to examine the factors that influence public acceptance towards people with disabilities involvement in physical activity. Based on the Theory of Reasoned Action and Cultural Values Theory, four factors (public attitudes, exposure, ethnicity and subjective norms) were examined in this study. A stratified and convenience sampling technique was adopted to collect data from public without disabilities (N=444), who were exercising at four public recreational parks in Klang Valley, Malaysia. The instrument was developed based on previous study and opinion of a panel of experts. Regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship between the variables. The result showed that the relationship between subjective norms and acceptance has the highest value (R2=0.179), compared to attitude (R2=0.146), ethnicity (R2=0.073) and exposure (R2=0.044). The result indicated that stressing on family supports, mutual contacts and promoting positive attitude of the public are promising approaches to improving public acceptance towards participation of the disabled in physical activity.
